GenCon 2011 Battle Reports

I took very brief notes before or after each of my 22 matches at GenCon, so here's my attempt at recording the awesomeness of my gaming experience.

Thursday I played Capture the Flag with a team of Jotun, 10th x3 (last second decision over DCoT x4, Raelin, MBS, Ogre Pulverizer).

Game 1 vs stubobj on Ticalla Sunrise
Dwarves x4, Q10, Marcu

So much for picking Jotun and Co. over DCoT... My dice started out hot and 10th mowed down Dwarves forcing Q10 to come out. And then I couldn't hit him. At all. My opponent took control of Wannok, and Jotun moved to stop him. However, after Q10 blocked 3 skulls (out of 9 dice!), Dwarves killed Jotun in only 2 turns.

Loss, 0-1

Game 2 vs Jeff on Ticalla Sunrise
Braxas, Charos, White Wyrmling

My 10th moves out first and met Braxas mid-field. She gassed 3 in one turn, but went down to WTF in the next. Charos did a heck of a job cleaning up more and I was down to 3 before Jotun moved in for the flag (getting a cheap shot with Wannok on the way). I tried to bait Charos away from the flag, but my opponent protected it well. Eventually, though, he did make the mistake of stepping one space too far away, and Jotun took a leaving engagement attack, the flag, and the victory.

Win, 1-1

Game 3 vs Walt on Common Ground
3x Heavies, Grimnak, Tornak, Isamu

Grimnak Chomped 2 10th before I took him out, so things were looking good. Jotun even managed to spatter an Orc with Throw. But every single return attack got 1 wound through on Giant. When he fell neither of us had much left, but the constant stream of Orcs through the center plus Tornak pounding a 10th every turn meant my flag was eventually captured.

Loss, 1-2

Game 4 vs Luke on Breach
Charos, Master otH, Iron Golem

This is normally a difficult map for spread out squads, but against single attack heroes I was able to get height and the upper-hand. IG guarded his flag while Jotun guarded mine. MotH tried to fight off the 10th but there were too many of them. Then Charos made a valiant () effort to take my flag from Jotun, but my 10th got to his first.

Win, 2-2

3 Pack Draft
Lawmen & Samurai, Ninjas & Samurai, Heroes of Khorvaire

Game 1 vs David on Breach
my 2x Protectors, Heirloom, Rhogar
vs his Taelord, DED, Guilty, Tagawa Samurai

Drafting 2x Protectors, especially o this map, in a hero-heavy environment was the game-winner. It took them at most 2 turns to kill any hero, and even manages to fight off Bloodthirsted Samurai, only losing 1 Protector (my only casualty).

Win, 1-0

Game 2 vs Jim on Common Ground
my Raelin, Airborne Elite, NGS, Guilty, Rhogar
vs his Tagawa and Kozuke Samurai, Ninjas, Thorgrimm

First Round Drop helped me mow down half the Ninja and Samurai on his side. But then his Tagawa went on a rampage and flattened all my heroes with ease. It came down to a full-Life NGS vs 1 Ninja. And the Ninja rolled 4 skulls every attack.Jim would've won, but his friend gave him an urgent phone call and he had to go, so he gave me the victory.

Win, 2-0

Game 3 vs Mr. Migraine on Fulcrum
my Templar Cavalry, Kozuke, Mika, Heirloom
vs his Shurrak, Valguard, Rhogar, Guilty

He drafted the big heroes and the healer, so I counter-drafted things to hit fast and hit hard. And it worked. Between his attacks hitting 1 skull often and my 5+ attack dice charges, I plowed through all 4 heroes with Kozuke and Templars alone.

Win, 3-0

Game 4 vs R˙chean on Trailblazer
my Kozuke, Elite Onyx Vipers, Rhogar, Mika
vs his Shurrak, Ninjas, Heirloom, DED

Ry won first pick and wisely chose Shurrak on the lava map... Since we had 2 duplicate packs, it was a matter of differentiating our armies, then filling out with Ninjas/Samurai. Ry had this game in the bag from the very beginning, Shurrak bowling through half my squad figures, then wailing on Rhogar in my start zone. At the end of Round 2, I had 2 squaddies on lava and 1 on Wannok...and rolled 1. Game over. Or so I thought. Mika Ambushed Shurrak and killed him shortly after he finished Rhogar (who held up like a champ, but did absolutely nothing else for me in any of my games). Then the Ninjas were on her, so she fought them from the shadows. She was hurting and still fighting 2 when I said it would be funny if she somehow beat them only to get shot in the face by DED. Well, sure enough, at 1 Life she killed the last Ninja. Then I danced around keeping DED's 50/50 shot away from me, and getting a cheap shot with Wannok. Eventually I engaged him as well, but he had height (and avoided further lava damage at Round's end). I couldn't hit him and finally he did kill Mika, a much-deserved win for Ry.

Loss, 3-1; second place

3 Pack Draft was by far my favorite event (and not just due to my placement). The variety of figures and skill involved in playing them was a great experience.

Other events coming soon...

I thought for sure my Q10 was a gonner when I absent mindedly opened up an ally for Jotun to come up. He blocked like a champ though. With Jotun gone I wasn't so worried anymore. Mad props for bringing Jotun just bad luck to get the dwarf matchup first game.

You should bold each heading of each tourney so it's easier to find.
