April 2011 Louisville Tournament

This month's format was Heat of Battle, 510 points.

I played "The Roman Legion":

250 Roman Legionnaires x5
120 Mogrimm Forgehammer
090 Ne-Gok-Sa
050 Me-Burq-Sa

Game 1 vs Mariah on "If You Can't Take the Heat"
260 Mezzodemon Warmongers x4
120 Black Wyrmling x4
120 Red Wyrmling x4
010 Isamu (I didn't write him down, but I think she had 510 points)

When I saw what I would be facing, I didn't think much of my chances. However, since placement is such a big factor in this format, I was able to give myself a big edge from the setup. The entire Roman Legion formed up across the center of the board, while drakes and demons were forced onto lower ground. Though I started on the lava, I made sure to get everyone off it by the end of the round (except Me-Burq-Sa a couple times, and he took a wound each). In the end only 5 Romans got roasted/poisoned, and besides MBS's burns, Ne-Gok-Sa took a passing swipe.

Result: Win, 1-0

Game 2 vs Gordon on "Burial Marsh"
280 Fire Elemental x8
120 Kurrok the Elementalist
080 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior RotV
030 Air Elemental

I thought I made a mistake early by choosing to place first. Had I gone second, I thought he'd have to place Raelin or Kurrok before NGS if I left him for last, but looking at the numbers it didn't matter. Gordon played his army well, but this game really came down to my dice rolls. I made a ton of attacks from height (4 dice) and rolled a whopping on 90% of them. Gordon Firestorm'd me soundly.

Result: Loss, 1-1

Game 3 vs Sawyer on Fulcrum
120 Zombies of Morindan x2
110 Airborne Elite
110 Sentinels of Jandar
090 Marrden Hounds
080 Shaolin Monks

After my loss I got paired against a mish-mash of squads, which is fairly easy to beat with 20 Roman soldiers. His Airborne Dropped first round (he opted not to place), but I won Initiative (thanks, Mogrimm!) and killed two (one with MBS, one with a Roman) before they threw Grenades...which amounted to 1 skull and 1 wound on Mogrimm. That's pretty much how the whole round went, including Mogrimm frustrating the SoJ's Shields of Valor with 3 of the 5 successful (out of 6 attempts) Commander's Strikes.

Result: Win, 2-1

Game 4 vs Arianna on Midnight Lagoon
210 Knights of Weston x3
150 Cyprien Esenwein
100 Sir Denrick
045 Sonya Esenwein

This game was basically won on the placement roll. I won it, giving the whole 'lagoon' and center of the board to my Legion. with my 2 extra cards, NGS was placed to threaten Cyprien (and eventually killed him from height after picking up +1 attack treasure). Romans made a mess of Knight corpses, Denrick got trapped in the river after going after MBS (who died in one Giant Killing strike), and Sonya actually put up the best fight. Heartbroken, she fully healed by feasting on a couple Romans. But numbers won the day for me.

Result: Win, 3-1

Game 5 vs Sean on Welcome to the Swamp
150 Warriors of Ashra x3
120 Tagawa Samurai
100 Kozuke Samurai
080 Raelin the Kyrie Warrior RotV
050 Arkmer
010 Isamu

WOW. Talk about a bad-looking match-up for my army. I let him place first so I could threaten Raelin with my last card, which proved to be absolutely crucial. Since I was still able to secure much of the hills, there was nowhere he could place Raelin that I couldn't Stare at her with a height-advantaged, screened MBS. His Tagawa got fully experienced (the last marker from Counter Strike) while MBS did Raelin in. Raelin gone, I fared better against the samurai. WoA on the other hand didn't whiff a single defense roll for at least a couple rounds. Sean killed 60% of the Romans and put a couple hits on Mogrimm, but again numbers were too much for my opponent.

{NOTE: Sean was the only 4-0 player before this match. My victory bumped him down to 4th place. Overall, he played all the other top 5 finishers.}

Result: Win, 4-1; 2295 points, 3rd place (the two tied winners, Deroche [first due to SoS] and jschild had 2330 points)

Thanks to all my opponents, all the players, and PSC for hosting and Marcus for directing again!

{NOTE: I was very disappointed in NGS, not because he didn't steal anything, but because he had very few - fewer than expected - targets all day.}

Sounds like a great tournament! Is Mogrimm a good unit to use as a warlord? I've been skeptical about using him over Marcus because he doesn't enhance them but offers a different approach to using them and seems like he could be worth it to use over Marcus.

I'd use both, but that's just me.

In this format Marcus isn't quite as good since the move bonus doesn't matter as much. Of course, he's still almost as hearty as Mogrimm and +1 attack is still nice. Mogrimm, though, gave me another much-needed "ranged" attack (Commander's Strike, which Sean hated [I used it to kill 1 WoA, but Tommy had used it against him in an early game as well]). His Combat Leader power helped with Initiative a few times as well (and I toyed with the idea of not using it one round, then using it the next to try to get double turns).

Really, they do very different things. In Heat of Battle, Mogrimm is superior. But in other tournament games, there is absolutely no replacement for Marcus (but run them both if you can!).

(All that said, Me-Burq-Sa was easily my MVP Warlord today).

Due to the cheapness of the Romans, I may be able to use both in a standard game. Thanks for the info NecroBlade! Me-Burq-Sa can really shine in some cases though, like when I used him as my only ranged support in a Deathchaser army.

I really like Death Chasers (with MBS) too.

A 'standard' 510 game could look like:
200 Romans x4
120 Mogrimm
100 Marcus
090 Ne-Gok-Sa

Necroblade... Mariah was running without Isamu for an even 500. If she had that little ninja... you probably would have gone down.
