TENTING TONIGHT
“We are tenting tonight on the old camp ground, Give us a song to cheer” --Tenting On The Old Camp Ground, traditional Civil War song “I love to go a-wandering, along the mountain track And as I go I love to sing, my knapsack on my back!” --Sing along song, Robin Hood Day Camp, early Sixties As a boy I’d attended summer day camp, but not sleep away camp. The first time I actually went camping over night was at the end of high school, when a pal loaded up a huge family tent and all kinds of camping equipment, and we drove off for a couple of weeks in the summer to upstate New York to go car camping. Now I love nature, but being a City boy have no field craft or outdoor skills whatsoever. We came to the conclusion one that first trip one evening that High School was basically a Prisoner of War camp for teenagers—to keep them off the streets and away from decent folk everywhere.
