Snow Rolling

Posted March 4th, 2015 at 01:39 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Sometimes I do unusual things. I was going to say Ďcrazy thingsĒ, but I donít really think of them as crazy. Honestly I donít even really think theyíre unusual. Iím not wired that way- I just think of things and do them and donít worry about what other people think. Who needs all those categories?

My sweetie pie is game for most things; sheís very good that way. It took me quite a while to discover things she wouldnít do Ė not on purpose, just by accident. She really dislikes swimming in water with green slimy stuff on top and she doesnít like being cold.

My sweetieís house has a nice deck and a pool and last winter on a bright sunny day I thought it would be a good idea if we all put on our bathing suits and rolled in the snow on the deck. I was able to talk my sweetie into doing it my mentioning that itís really common in Finland, itís good for your circulation and didnít it sound like fun?

I guess she knows me too well- sheíll do anything as long as I do it first. As a person I donít mind cold that much. As i get older i find i donít mind heat very much either. Iím not sure if that means anything. I didnít have any problem laying in the snow and having a hurried role in the fluffy snow. Itís hard not to hurry when the cold quickly evolves into numbing pain.

But truthfully, rolling in the snow makes you feel alive. Skin sensations flood your sensory receptors, adrenaline flows, your heart rate speeds up, you breathe more- you become fully alive. Oh, and your feet and legs get so cold it hurts like crazy. They hurt the most because you walk in the snow before you roll and then walk away. The pain can get pretty intense.

So we all rolled in the fluffy snow in 2014. My sweetie was in her bathing suit stepping out onto the deck when her dirty old man neighbour opened his window and shouted encouragement at her. That really embarrassed her. And then there was the numbing pain so my sweetie did not enjoy the experience. The cold induced pain was too much for her. My sons and i were fine with it. My sweetie swore she would never do such a ridiculous thing again and threatened to strangle me, in a nice way.

Well what do you think happened? Itís 2015, and although i had brought it up several times it was never taken seriously. Until it became competitive. My sweetie has a nice sister but they do compete with each other. The sister is not as willing to try things- well, letís just call her boring. Her son was playing with us and I was joking about rolling in the snow. Boring sisterís son was so fascinated he called his mother and asked her to bring his bathing suit over.

At this point it was all a joke. My sweetie was very.... interested.... in what her sister would say. I suggested we all be in our bathing suites when the sister arrived, like we were all going to roll in the snow, which of course we werenít. This was all meant to freak out boring sister.

We all got in our bathing suits. Sister arrived and left, not caring about our snow rolling at all. But hey, we were already in our bathing suites, right?

No! My sweetie said. People who roll in the snow jump in hot tubs afterwards. Thatís what they do in Finland- sheíd looked it up. Okay! I said, and filled the bathtub with hot water.

They made me go first, and I was fine with that. Weíve had some pretty cold temperatures so there was a bunch of jagged ice under the snow, so rolling was a bit uncomfortable. Then I ran into the bathroom and into the tub, which quickly got too hot for me.

My sweetie went next, screaming with cold pain but she really liked the hot water after. Then the boys went. Around then I started bleeding. I had made a good show of rolling but my poor soft warm flesh had been lacerated by the rough ice. I hadnít noticed at the time because I was numb and it was too cold for a good bleed. Warmed up I bled from various ice cuts. Iím glad to say that it was only me who was thus injured- the others had rolled with my exuberant abandon.

Soon everyone was warmed again and wet towels were everywhere. I hugged my sweetie and said ďI thought youíd never roll in the snow again.Ē

And she said ďitís just because Iím crazy about you.Ē

How great is that? I canít wait for next yearís snow roll. Wouldnít it be amazing if we did it every year until we were ninety?

Wow, sounds like you had a ton of fun!

For some reason there seems like there's so much snow out there this winter. Its a shame, for me at least, as I'm going crazy inside and won't dare step outside and face my mortal enemy, the cold.

But I'm very glad that people do enjoy it, like you.

Roll on!
Ice lacerations sound unpleasant.
