Reflections on Scenario Creation

Posted December 21st, 2010 at 01:42 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

I have spent an inordinate amount of time reading novels, as opposed to working, studying, exercising, etc. A good work of fiction (in print or on the screen), among other things, is totally engaging, makes you care about the characters, and gives them hard choices within a good story. I try to do the same when writing a Heroscape scenario.

I have my favorite Heroscape units, of course, that figure prominently in my personal Heroscape ethos, which has little or nothing to do with the "official" back story. I therefore don't write scenarios that dictate what units must be played. A related issue is writing scenarios, like Pirates!, with built-in unit restrictions, to encourage a wider variety of viable characters, or to create a certain ambience. Even there, I included a disclaimer to permit variants with fewer or no such restrictions, as many other players' ethoses differ radically from mine.

I mentioned "hard choices"...

Pirates! Battle Report Preview

Well met!

Sherman, chas and I played Pirates! last night (see link below).

A day later, and after some contemplation, I am still not certain of the right way to accomplish the "feel" I seek in this scenario. With both the Rope Swings and the Gangplanks, it is difficult to balance risk and reward in their use. I fear that Swinging is too easy and double-spaced units too disadvantaged. I have heard some of you mention that you have played Pirates!, but have seen no posts with any details. I have created the following thread particularly for Pirates! Battle Reports.

Within the week, I hope to have pictures and a more detailed report, with, of course, comments from chas and Sherman, of my impressions of what went on, and why. Otherwise, it will have to wait 'til I get back from Jamaica...

At Last . . .

Well met!

The Gang of Four is, finally, playing Pirates!

http://www.heroscapers.com/community/blog.php?b=1322

this Friday, 11/19/10. I'm so excited! Many of you have posted of your experiences playing it, but, other than a simulation with chas (which proved that it works ), I have yet to play it with teams. chas and Taeblewalker (Captain Eltahale and the Andromeda Ascendant) will be opposed by Sherman and I (Captain Kaemon and the Kuro Kumori), each player with 750 points. When we were going to play earlier, at 500 points apiece and six players, Sherman was going to field Mindflayers and Raelin. Assuming he is still 'flayer heavy, and I field Captain Kaemon, Mogrimm, Ana, and Thorgrim, which of the following would you use to fill out the remaining 330 points, and why?

Kee-Mo-Shi, Crixus, [Moriko][Migol] or

Alastair, Rhogar, [Migol][Moriko] or

Alastair, Migol, Moriko or

Sudema, Finn, Migol...

As One Door Closes . . .

The image of Death charging across a field on his spectral steed would strike fear into the heart of almost any man. The appearance of the Death card has a similar effect on most people, though it really should not. Whether you like it or not, Death is one of the most powerful cards in the Tarot. Humans naturally fear the unknown, and so Death is our greatest fear since it is the greatest unknown. The majority of us are unaware that our mind and spirit die all the time, constantly shedding old beliefs and acquiring new ones. It has been said many times by many readers: the Death card is not a card of death - it is a card of transformation. ~ James Rioux

And so it begins. A new era for Heroscape. The King is dead; long live the King!

Condolences to everyone.

While many of us are feeling pain, shock, outrage, etc., in the wake of the "announcement", on the site, on the phone,...
