C3G Interview - GamerHusband

C3G Interview
GamerHusband
Author: davidhls & Tornado

Welcome all to another C3G Interview. I have been doing a bit of a mix of old interviews and new, so this time around I decided to give you both. GamerHusband goes back to the early days of C3G, but stepped away for a while. Well, he is back and is slowly digging into the new designs and having amazing battles.

So let us start with the old interview hosted by the legend that is davidlhsl.

Give it up for ... GamerHusband!

If you could change one thing about Heroscape, what would it be?

Bring it to back into production.

How often do you get to play Heroscape? I believe you also play with a gaming group. Tell us a bit about them.

For the last 5 years, I have played Heroscape weekly in a very steady group of 5 members. For Christmas in 2006, my wife gave me a Heroscape master set as a Christmas gift. In just a few months we had all the figures, and my friends were eager to play each week. In 5 years, there was never a hitch in attendance. In 2009 it got so popular I started capping games at 8 players. C3G was also a huge hit with us, and I was glad to see two of us from the group become Allies (CharosInCharge being the other). Lately there has been a big slowdown. As of right now, I have gone 5 weeks without playing a game. I’m hopeful CharosInCharge and my other friends will start playing again soon.

What made you decide to dive in to C3G?

I really liked Marvel Heroscape. Back in 2007, I was able to go to San Diego Comic-Con and saw the wave 1 figures in person. Sadly, as we all know, they were never released! I started looking at all the designs people had made on their own, but none of them seem to really fit together as a large group. Once C3G came along, that problem was fixed, and we hit the ground running.

Which C3G design do you think would work best in any army it’s drafted in? Which is most dependent on drafting with specific figures?

For a unit that always works well, I would have to go with Deadpool. A solid unit no matter the situation. The most dependent would obviously be Green Construct and Master Mold. A less obvious figure is Hawkman. Hawkgirl is needed with wounds for his powerful attack to kick in!

What is the largest Heroscape game you’ve played? This could be map size, number of players, army points ... whatever you prefer.

It was the most recent game I’ve played of C3G Heroscape. My wife got all the members of my gaming group together for a surprise birthday party. We ended up having a C3G game with 9 players. We had to make 2 game maps and tie them together with a bridge. 4 people played on each map. The 9th player was the Anti-Monitor. He bounced from side to side trying to erase everyone from existence!

Based on your name, I assume you’re married. What does your wife think of your love for games? Does she like to play games as well? Which ones?

My wife likes that I have a love for games but thinks I spend too much money on them. I think with all my Heroscape stuff, I’ve invested close to $5,000, so she might be onto something. My wife does like playing games, but does not play Heroscape. The games we play together are, Small World, Carcarssonne, Pandemic, and Thunderstone.

What was the best vacation you’ve ever taken? If you could take a vacation right now anywhere in the world, where would you go?

The best vacation I’ve ever taken was in summer of 1998 right after I got out of high school. I went with my high school marching band to Australia. We got to perform in the Sydney Opera House, as well as visit Canberra and Melbourne.

My dream vacation would be to go to a massive C3G tournament somewhere on Earth where all the Heroes, Sidekicks, and Allies could play Heroscape for days!!

If you could have a superpower in real life, what would it be?

It would have to be mind control. Just think about it. You can make anybody do what you want.

The Stupid Question: Give me a brief plot of a movie that would definitely make you walk out of the theater.

Anything to do with global warming and/or feelings.

C3G 3 Truths and a Lie
  1. I’ve beaten the second quest in the Legend of Zelda.
  2. I’ve read War and Peace.
  3. Not only was I in the marching band fraternity, I was the president.
  4. I feel Dünd is a useful unit with practice.

And now I return you to the present.

First question is what was the lie? #1?

Secondly, after reading your old interview, is there anything that stands out or you want to comment on?

Wow ... it’s cool these questions are still around. First off, to answer your first question: yes, you are correct. As of today I still have not beaten the Legend of Zelda’s second quest. It’s still on my bucket list. I believe I am on the 5th labyrinth. The game is still saved on my old Wii. I guess I need to dig it out.

After reading through the questions, here’s what stands out. The other games I wrote down that I enjoyed playing have changed a bit. The ones I listed are “gateway” games, but, in my C3G absence, I have refined that list a little. I really like to play heavy Eurogames now, like Terra Mystica, Agricola, Castles of Burgundy, and Dominant Species. Back in the day, I would not have touched these.

I am also glad that one of my dream vacations came true with you guys hosting the first ever C3G Con. I would have loved to attend this and discuss and playing C3G Heroscape in person. I am not ruling out traveling back east for this if it happens again.

It will. Hope to see you there!

You have recently gotten back into playing C3G and posting the results, which has been really fun to read. Could you talk about that process?

Sure. The craziness of 2020 brought me back to Heroscape. At my weekly game night, we were playing Eurogames for about the last 5 years. In March we were playing Kingsburg, when everything had to stop. After a few months, I wanted to play again, but I could not get anyone to return. That’s when I got out classic Heroscape. It’s large, so you do not have to stand close together when playing. You also do not have to touch other player pieces. I started playing it in my garage. That got two of my friends back. After a few weeks, I started to want to play C3G again, so slowly convinced my friends to play.

C3G got really big while I was gone. There are hundreds of units I have never played with. I wanted my friends to enjoy the game, but not get overwhelmed by the massive size of the project. We started playing with only units from core Hasbro units, Master Set 1, Wave 1, and Wave 2. I like to call this the “Golden Age of C3G.”

What got me into the battle report idea was that the forum never really seemed to have that much traffic. It seemed like the website focused more on design and playtesting. Actual gameplay accounts were hard to find. That is when I decided that the way I would give back to the project again was by sharing my game group C3G experiences. It was an idea that my friends really liked too. So I started taking notes during our games and then summarizing them as battle reports.

The Hero/Zero award was an idea that I came up with to make the reports more interesting. It turns a battle report more into a news article than a summary of gameplay. I have to say, I did not realize the game awards would be so well liked. My group loves to discuss them during and after a game. Now when something really bad happens to a unit, my group will say “wow, that’s a Zero move for sure.” The reports have done a great job of keeping my group closer together. I’m also glad they have really influenced the format of how battle reports are now posted on the site.

What is also fun is how we are always making our unit pool bigger. Each week I add 5 new units directly off the C3G Sortable Index in numerical order. It also helps that the winner each week can pick any C3G figure they want and add it to the unit pool. We’ve gotten lots of newer units that way. Godzilla, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and Raphael, just to name a few. With the size of the project and the massive unit pool, I will never run out of new units to add, unless we play for years and years.

So, as long as my friends still want to play each week, I will be posting reports. I am still trying to make my group bigger. I really want 5 normal players, but that seems almost impossible right now. I have a little something fun planned for when we reach 25 games. I’m still planning it out, but it will be a cool report for sure.

You were around for the early days of C3G. What are your memories of that time and what did you think when you returned to find C3G in its current state?

Back when we started with C3G, Wave 3 had just been released. We had a ton of fun. What I really remember the most was playtesting some of what you guys would call today the “older units.” I remember very well the first unit I ever got to test. It was Ultron. I helped CharosInCharge test that one quite extensively. I also worked on Omega Red and all of the Power Pack. We also did a playtest for the most expensive C3G unit of them all, Beyonder. I was also able to provide a little artistic help with Master Mold. The figure picture was the model I worked on. The last release I remember coming out while we where still playing, was “World War Winter.”

What I am really amazed at now, is that the project is not only still around, but still going full steam ahead. The content is not only amazing, but overwhelming. There are so many units. I cannot believe it has made it this far. I know of no other fan-made project close to this size and depth in the board game world. Now I am on a mission of discovery. Getting back into the game and learning how all these units play is great. The newer units are just as great as the original ones.

Man, I couldn't believe it when I first came to this blog & read Davidlhls was the author. I was like Not only is @GamerHusband back but david also .

Then I was 50% let down.

Great to see GamerHusband back to enjoying C3G & his awesome battle reports. Great interview. Not really 50% let down, as it always good to reminisce the old days & the people that make them memorable.

P.S. you missed an "l" in davidlhls. Not that I could get the "@" working for him anyway. :/
