People are Evil

Posted May 6th, 2010 at 01:23 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I have always thought I was a fair and tolerant person.
I have always liked children, even other people’s.
I have always tried to take life’s up and downs with the least amount of stress, like a balloon on a string.

I am self-deluded.

I no longer like other people’s children.
Or other people.
Or balloons on string. That is a really stupid analogy anyway.

In the past I have welcomed friends that came over with their wee ones. I watched happily as the kids viewed our Scape investment with awe. Dragons. Robots. Weird slimy creatures. Horses Dwarves. I even let them play with the figures that were out in our permanently setup Heroscape room. I thought “great- new players in the making.”

Now this has changed forever.

There is a new house rule. DON’T TOUCH THE SCAPE. Nasty evil parents with their filthy fingered offspring. Don’t go in the Heroscape room!

Like every player who is a little obsessive compulsive I have acquired what some might call “too much Scape”. I shrug off such cretinous judgments - they don’t know. They don’t understand. Let them watch TV and play dominos. I know what a game really is. I know the joy of the hunt. I know what it feels like to be truly alive!

With a lot of Scape comes a lot of responsibility.
Translated: with a lot of Scape comes a lot of storage issues. We all sooner or later tackle the “where do I put things where I can find them quickly without dumping everything out and losing my mind”?

For Christmas my children gave me a five-drawer organizers on wheels. I have great kids. They know what a dad really needs. I will spare them when I reorganize the world.

That five-drawer organizer has now been joined by two more three-drawer units, as well as two large tubs, one large cardboard box, 7 metal tins and a castle set still in the box. As a family we have found ways to sort our Scape: there’s drawers for Einar, Jandar, Magmar, Ullar, Utgar and Vydar. The Vydar drawer is on the bottom of the five-drawer unit and it is the biggest, which is good because it has some very big dragons in it. Also we have a dwarf drawer, a Templar drawer, a drawer for horses, one for goblins, one for Marr, one for fragile warhammer customs and one for siege equipment. We have containers for bushes, for our two different forests, and a special spot for the glyph, wound and dice containers. It usually works out very well.

Until now.

Our Scape room was unguarded. Someone went in and played with the figures. They must have thought they died and went to Valhalla- all those beautiful figures. I bet they played with them on the map that was already up. It was a nice map too. Then I bet a parent came in and saw the four or five hundred figures all over the floor. Then I bet that same parent helped the child pickup. But “pickup” is too generous a word. I bet that parent helped their child to destroy an organizing system that was years in the making!

First they filled the Vydar drawer. Filled it to the top. FILLED. There were even some tiles in there! They had leftovers, of course, so they put some in every drawer. To make it look balanced perhaps. And then they left my house, smiling no doubt, false back-stabbing lying fiends pretend friends demon spawn.

We suspected nothing. We built a nice map. We decided on a four player 550 point game. Then all hell broke loose.

Who would do such a thing? Who? I’m going to find out. I’m going to go to their house while they’re not at home, and empty out every freakin’ drawer in the place. Underwear drawer, sock drawer, toothpaste, tools, forks, spoons, sewing things, wallets, keys- and then I’m going to put it all in big plastic tubs. I’ll drag those tubs out on to their front lawn and set them on fire! So they can feel how it feels! Die! Die! Die!

Man, couldn't they see that it was all nice and neat when they started to play with the figures? Gosh, that would infuriated me as well.

I've actually had similar experiences, except with my terrain. I had just recently organized my RotV terrain into an box, and then my mom decided she needed to use it, so she dumped it in my spare tile box! I was annoyed for some time, but I couldn't stay mad long since the box went to bed some kittens. But now I'm down one box for storage.

I would agree with this:

I would be very tempted to this as well to those people. Sometimes to get the point across, you have to treat them the same way.

I really thought you were going to tell me that they stole a bunch of stuff from you - kind of went a different way with that one.

Kids will be kids. Personally I feel that sort of thing just needs to be taken it in stride; the powers that be in the universe getting back at us for doing the same thing when we were a kids. I know I made a glorious mess of things on more than a few occasions, and I'm sure that's why I only have a partial Heroquest set today (it was complete until my little brother got into it).

Besides, it sounds more like the parent was the problem more than the child. Sure, the kid made a mess, but their parent should have assumed there was some sort of organization and 'fessed up.

I recently had a mini-catastrophe at my house. It was my fault.

We had some friends coming by for a bible study. I had the large jungle temple ruin map I was working on setup on the dining room table. I asked my wife to "put away" the map.

Now, I store my 'Scape according to set, to make building maps easier. However, she broke it into small-ish sections and DUMPED them into my spare-tiles bin!

The next day I went over with my wife how to properly put away the HeroScape. She already knew really, but had been in a hurry. It took use a good long while to sort everything out.

Well Megasilver said "Man, couldn't they see that it was all nice and neat when they started to play with the figures? Gosh, that would infuriated me as well."

How would somebody know if a person is Jandar or Utgar if they aren't scapers? Also, the demonic child creature removed everything. Its not neat when the createn child removes it all and uses his evil magic to screw the heck out of the system.

dfonse: Well, you are right in a way. They wouldn't know exactly where everything went, but it is still not nice to stuff everything into one shelf, and lightly sprinkle them in the others. Also, certain figures to look the same, such as StW's Templars. Even if they were not sure, they could have at least attempted to organize.

That's horrible, it just takes once. I wish you luck in cleaning up the pickup.

But be glad you don't have High School children/relatives/friends, who think it's funny to throw expensive miniatures and cards at each other...

And yet, I empathize and sympathize with you at the same time. A very enjoyable read, though the experience of it having to occur to provide this merriment was less than enjoyable I'm sure.

But please, if I may request, please post the burning once it occurs.

I know these demonic little children that always destroy my Heroscape maps when they come over, and occasionally touch my figures and screw up the order.(They are all arranged by the world they come from)

Totally the parent who's at fault. Way not to watch their kids when they bring them over. And what nerve for the parent not to say anything and just "sneak" away afterwards.
