Dwarves versus Templars

Our First House Tournament Game

In our never-ending quest to escape three-player jeopardy we decided to have a house tournament. It was to be a 550 point game between two people, with the third person creating the map.

My younger son challenged me. He is a dwarf lover. I wrote some stories for him for Xmas (a family tradition) featuring some of our dwarf customs figures and he got really hooked. At his behest we have filled out a pretty good-sized dwarven force and so he was anxious to field them against me.

I, of course, picked the Templars. It was going to be my first opportunity to play with three new figures, including the custom Templar healer my kids created for me for my birthday.

My older son predicted that it would be a blood bath- heís very anti-dwarf and he guaranteed that the low movement (our custom dwarves typically have a move of three) would spell the dwarvesí demise.

Oh itís worthwhile mentioning too that every figure was a custom except for Darrak Ambershard. The map was basic with two gradual elevations, ending at 5 high

I won the initiative shake and sent my Templar Sergeants (archers) to take the heights on Templar horses. (their special is they can carry two medium or small figures) I was hoping to take the elevation and prevent my son from doing the same, while picking off his slow moving army as they came to get me.

Heíd selected two squads of dwarf ponies and I hadnít realized how tough they were until the game began. Itís pretty common to target the horse in our games, as they only have one life and when they fall the rider is stunned for one turn and possibly dies at the whim of the 20d (17+). Well, his dwarf ponies came at me carrying his little dwarves.

In what I though was a brilliant stroke I dismounted the archers, who then scrambled up the heights and sent some heavily armed Templar penitents on horseback to face his forward troops. Between the penitents and the archers I killed all of his ranged units but one. Now I could just sit there, pick off the dwarves, and laugh.

My younger son did not waiver. He continued calmly playing, as my elder son taunted him, predicting doom. The dwarves unloaded their bolt thrower (it can travel on horse back) and set it up. It has a range of 12, and so he pulled his other troops back and began doing to me what I had planned to do to him. It didnít take long for me to send in my melee troops to try and destroy that wretched bolt thrower. I think I was motivated more by panic and fear than anything- the bolt thrower had only caused two wounds- but it got me moving.

He counter-attacked my attack and for about eight turns it was impossible to know who was going to win. On his turns I was certain he was going to win but then on my turn it seemed I was going to.

All the while I was happily thinking that our customsí point-pricing system had really worked- these two very different forces with different abilities were very, very equal.

I never did destroy the bolt thrower. It takes two figures to operate it and I satisfied myself by killing at least one of them every turn.

And then all at once, it was over. I had two defense shakes that were 6 skulls and five skulls respectively, and I was down to one figure to my sonís three. On his next turn, he finished my forces off.

The last Templar falls

I have lost a lot of games of Scape, but I tell you, that was one of the most exciting games that I have ever played. It was also the first time I fielded an entire army of Templars, which was definitely fun for me.

We awarded my son a fabulous medal made out of a jar lid with a hole poked in it, on a piece of blue yarn. It entitles him to bragging rights, until one of us can take it away from him.

The only downside is that my elder son didnít get to play, and he really wanted to. And of course now he has to listen to his younger brother bragÖ

That is really cool! How did you make those Templar archers? If you like using archers make a beach and use some 7 hexes as boats. I played a fantastic game with a beach and then a cliff with archers firing down from the cliff onto attackers who where heading for the cave entrance.

The Templar archers are just warhammer figures custom painted.
And Yeah, boats are cool. We use 7 hexers as the main ship type and do a lot of sea battles, invasions and landings. And it gives our water creatures a chance to fight in their favoured medium...

My customs Dwarves are also slow, and have a bombard made from a Mage Knight cannon.

I don't know what it is about dwarves that I like so much. I guess it's because they're so fiercely determined, powerful in their way and yet weak. It kind of makes them perfect.
How does your cannon work? Does it change game play? I'm a pretend member of the Valhalla Society, so guns scare me, even if they're manned by dwarves.
