Unit Strategy Review

Unit: Zaeus
Author: Taeblewalker

The Gorillinators have finally gotten someone fun to play with, utilizing them in an efficient way. His rail gun is powerful and can cause a lot of trouble for your opponent. However, his survivability isn’t as high as it might be, and you are going to have to use some finesse when fielding this Primadon.

Analyzed Statistics
Cost – 130 (Knight Class Unit)
Size – Medium 5
Members – 1 Unique Hero
Life – 4 (Low)
Move – 5 (Average)
Range – 1 (Melee)
Attack – 4 (Above Average)
Defense – 4 (Vulnerable)
Gorillinator Attack Bonding:Take an extra attack turn with Gorillinator when taking a turn with Zaeus. (Tactial advantage:High)
Rail Gun Special Attack: Possibly hit a secondary target with extra wounds. (Tactical advantage: High)
Tournament Readiness: Medium-High

In-Depth Analysis
Each unit is complex, and must be well analyzed to be truly understood. We’ll begin with their cost. By cost, we refer mostly to the value in points, but also to its importance in your army. To simplify analysis, Agatagary has created several categories of cost, based off of chess, for comparison and nomenclature. For reference:
  • Pawn class (expendable, units that can be useful, but are not worth enormous trouble to protect)
  • Bishop class (more useful than a pawn, but still somewhat expendable)
  • Knight class (units that are interestingly powerful and can have a significant impact on the game in of themselves; it is advisable that they be kept alive, but if absolutely necessary they may be sacrificed)
  • Rook class (units that almost inevitably have a significant impact on the game, and whose death should be avoided as much as possible)
  • Queen class (devastatingly powerful or important units that should be protected at all costs)

Class:
Zaeus is a knight class unit. He is important to your overall strategy, but you still have a chance of winning if he is taken out.

Offense:
With an Attack of 4, Zaeus poses a reasonable threat. When he uses his rail gun, he can cause wounds to a secondary target on an overkill hit. This makes his offense pretty good. The ability to attack with the Gorillinators only improves that.

Survivability:
With a Life of 4 and a Defense of 4, Zaeus can be taken out by concentrated effort. He has some staying power, but you are best off doing a lot of damage with him as quickly as possible to get the most use out of him before he is gone.

General Strategy:
When drafting Zaeus, you will want some Gorillinators for the attack bonding. If you have the points, it might be a good idea to take the Nakit Agents as well. This way, you can put an order marker on the Nakitas and move the Gorillinators, then another order marker on Zaeus and attack with the Gorillinators. Getting the Gorillinators on to height quickly is a good strategy, as once they start attacking from there they can be a powerful addition to Zaeus' arsenal.

The Nakitas can also be used to screen Zaeus with their Smoke Powder 13 special power. Having Zaeus hang back and fire his rail gun can improve his survivavbility. And the Nakitas can use Engagement Strike 15 on anyone who gets too close.

Rail Gun Special Attack is good against enemy units that cluster, like the Roman Legionnaires, or Grimnak and Tornak with their Orc Warriors. Just be careful about targeting a unit that is engaged with one of your own figures, as you may inadvertantly damage that figure as well as destroying the enemy. If you have a figure that is engaged to two or more enemies, however, then you can choose one of the other enemies to take the spillover fire.

Use the Gorillinators to keep enemy units from engaging Zaeus. Their protective fire should do a pretty decent job of picking off any units that come too close. If the enemy does manage to close, all is not lost. His attack of 4 is still a formidable weapon, even if he loses his rail gun power up close. If you really want to protect Zaeus, use the the Gorillinators as a screen.

It is probably best to alternate order markers between Zaeus and the Nakitas. This will allow you to continually bring up new Gorillinators to fill in the gaps when your first squad falls. It will also allow you to take advantage of the Nakitas’ reasonably high attack value to beat back advancing enemy units.

Optional Strategies:
Bring the Bacon: A good way to set up the Gorillinators as a screen is to use Raelin. With their Tough ability and her extra dice they should last a while, thereby keeping enemies from engaging Zaeus. This will allow him to make the most use of his rail gun.

Units to Avoid:
High Defense Units: Your strategy with Zaeus relies on his ability to reliably take out enemies at a comfortable pace. Units like the Knights of Weston have the ability to shrug off the attacks of Zaeus and his Gorillinators and outlast him in a battle of attrition.

I still need to try this army, now that I have Zaeus and the G’nators.
