Fan Art Spotlight - January 2016

A fan art spotlight
Author: Evar Scarcarver

Ironically, I played more HeroScape while the Codex was inactive, while we got everything set in stone as to how the new format will work. ‘We’ mainly being the editors, which doesn’t include me, but I use a royal ‘we’ as though the Codex is an entity that is created by merging all those who work on it, which in some ways is true, but is mostly an overly metaphorical artistic vision of how I see the text on the forums in which all the contributors communicate.

It’s been a while (over six months, I believe) since I’ve written this column—this column which has an identity crisis over whether it’s me talking about a piece of art related to the game we all unite through, or me just writing whatever strange overly analytical and strangely metaphorical thing

Unit Strategy Review

Unit: Zaeus
Author: Taeblewalker

The Gorillinators have finally gotten someone fun to play with, utilizing them in an efficient way. His rail gun is powerful and can cause a lot of trouble for your opponent. However, his survivability isn’t as high as it might be, and you are going to have to use some finesse when fielding this Primadon.

Analyzed Statistics
Cost – 130 (Knight Class Unit)
Size – Medium 5
Members – 1 Unique Hero
Life – 4 (Low)
Move – 5 (Average)
Range – 1 (Melee)
Attack – 4 (Above Average)
Defense – 4 (Vulnerable)
Gorillinator Attack Bonding:Take an extra attack turn with Gorillinator when taking a turn with Zaeus. (Tactial advantage:High)
Rail Gun Special Attack: Possibly hit a secondary target with extra

Who are you really?
Don Zimmerman

How old are you?

What is your occupation?
Software Engineer at IBM.

What other interests do you have?
I’m pretty heavily into tabletop gaming. Outside of Heroscape I don’t play a lot of miniature games, but I do play a lot of board and card games as well as some RPGs. Some video gaming as well. My primary hobby, though, is anime. The walls of my basement are covered in bookcases full of anime DVDs and Blu-rays.

What’s another board game you enjoy and why?
I’ve been playing a lot of Cthulhu Wars lately. While the rules are simple and the game is relatively fast, it has an incredible amount of depth of play. And the awesome, huge miniatures

Tandem Designs, Part 1: The Theory
Author: Son of Arathorn

As anyHeroScape player knows, factions are a core part of the game. But what is a faction? In the simplest terms, I believe that a faction is a group of two or more units that are designed to work well together for greater effect on the battlefield. The most basic example of a faction is a simple bonding squad and hero. In this example, each works better with the other than it would on its own. Early examples of this relationship in HeroScape include Grimnak and the Blade Gruts, the Knights of Weston and the Viking Champions ... the list goes on and on. As the development of the game moved forward, the initial pairs and small groups of units grew to include more heroes, more squads, and the connections between those units grew with each addition to a faction. Mind you,

Unit Strategy Review - Kato + Ashigaru Army

Unit Strategy Review
Unit: Ashigaru Harquebus, Ashigaru Yari, Kato Katsuro
Author: Dysole

The Kato + Ashigaru army (or Asian Invasion as some like to call it) doesn’t see a whole ton of play. At first glance, 200 points for an average figure combined with a bunch of units with average powers and 1 defense doesn’t seem all that formidable. However, as we shall see, these units all work together to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

First let’s take a closer look at their stats:

Analyzed Statistics

Cost – 200 (Queen Class Unit)
Size – Medium (Vulnerable/Somewhat concealable)
Life – 5 (Average)
Move – 6 (Fast)
Range – 1 (Melee)
Attack – 4 (Above Average)
Defense – 4 (Average)
