TGRF's Fan Fiction Chronicles - Entry #62

This is a quick update.

I'M BACK!

Been waiting to say that for five months.

I am indeed back. My current fan fiction has today gotten all the way through the development, the rough outline is complete, all plot holes are filled in. All that remains is to write a final, smoother outline which I can refer to when writing, and to organize a few scenes which aren't quite nailed down. Then I begin writing.

I will probably save the more detailed recounting of how I got here for the author's note of the fan fiction. But I will say that after all I've learned in these five months, I feel like I have ascended to a new level of writing. Everything I've written before now (except possibly Red) feels incomplete, compared to this new story. Even the massive HiS feels like it's only half there.

This is, as I have detailed before, because I have discovered the plot side of stories, and have discovered how to combine it with the character side of stories which I for so long was relying entirely on. I've learned how to bring the two halves together, and for the first time, the story I have actually feels like a real story. It feels like a book I might pick up and read. Even Red never really felt like that. At least not to me.

But as I said, this is just a short update to let you know what's coming. This story will be the first in what I hope to be a series recounting the war on Valhalla. This first story opens with Utgar's origins.

This story did start as a retelling of the Utgar story which I already wrote. But at this point it only bears similarity in that some of the character's names are the same, and little else.

This story should be longer than Utgar, hopefully by quite a bit (I can never tell until I write it). It is designed with twists in mind (true twists this time, not just complications). It will not give you all the answers until the very end. While it was not actually specifically designed for it, the tension level ramps up at a consistent pace throughout the story. While my normal character arcs are present, they are in the background, lending the structure of the plot weight and meaning, but not trying to take over at any point. The primary goal of this story was to successfully combine a character arc structure with a twist-centric plot, and I believe I have succeeded in that goal.

Writing will begin some time next week (depending on when I get the outline fully smoothed out). I estimate it will take between one and two weeks to write. After that I will check it over for improvements/corrections, which if memory serves usually takes around three days. I will then begin posting the chapters.

I will keep you updated.

Sounds like a plan. Your stuff is pretty good, so if you think this is that much better then I'm looking forward to it.

Also 1-2 weeks to write? Y'all jokers are crazy fast. Are you like Stephen King? Is the co-author of this fiction cocaine?

By far what uses the most time is coming up with the right story. Once I get one which works, things seem to go disturbingly fast indeed. We'll see if it's really 1-2 weeks. Depends on how much there is and how long I can stay in the writing groove at a time.

P.S. No cocaine was involved in the making of this fan fiction.

Things might be a bit delayed; I found a few plot holes in the beginning which I need to fix. Also, the 3 act structure is saying my fiction is overbalancing towards the last half content-wise. I won't change anything based on that alone, but it's something to look into to see if the pacing is correct. I'll keep you updated.

The final outline is now complete. There were a few major plot holes which I had missed, and some scenes needed to be more thought out, so it took longer than I anticipated. However, it's done now, and I anticipate starting the writing tomorrow. Based on what else is going on in my life and how high I can keep my interest level, I will still put the completion time for the writing at 1-2 weeks. 3 if things go slow. After that it's just the final check-over and we're good to go.

@TheAverageFan Wonderdraft. It's $30, but worth every penny if you're like me and need to build worlds for every little thing. The creator also has a beta program for dungeons/cities.
