The ramblings of a designer turned writer turned computer geek turned writer turned designer with way too much time on his hands.
This is Not the End

Ever since HeroScape was discontinued, I've seen a disturbing trend begin to spring up. The week of the discontinuation, a good number of members sadly quite HSers. Others struggled on for a time, but the continually dropping numbers and lack of activity finally convinced them, too, to leave the halls of Valhalla.
A few dedicated souls remained. The various customs departments kept the spirit of Scape alive. Map and scenario creation abounded. CoN staggered on, despite low numbers of players. HSers still breathed.
Over the years since the discontinuation, I've seen people, over and over, give up and leave. Their reasons are always the same. "No one is on anymore." "I don't play HS anymore." "The site is dead." Every time I see one of these reasons, I know that another spark of the flame that is HeroScape has flickered and died.
And that's what HeroScape is: a flame; a flame made up out of us, those that remain. Yes, the game was ended. WotC gave up on it. But that doesn't mean that we need to. We are the game now. We are all it has left. People might leave because they think the game is dead, but it is that very act, leaving in and of itself, that is killing the game.
Nothing is dead as long as there are those that believe in it. As long as there is a single flicker of hope left, the spirit remains.
I know some might think that we are holding on to a lost cause. What is there to be gained by clinging to something that will likely never return? A life. A spirit. The essence of a great community that does not deserve to die simply because a game company decreed it be so. They gave up on us. But I will not, and I believe - I hope - that I am not the only one.
Many will say HeroScape has ended. But this is not the end. Not if you don't want it to be.

"Hold your ground! Hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers, I see in your eyes a fear that would take the heart of me!
A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves, and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not his day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid thee stand, men of the West!" |

The areas I mainly post in are more or less as active as they've ever been.

One of the places that has probably grown during this time is the customs departments, so that makes sense. In places like CoN and the Fan Fiction forum though, the drop-off has been startling to say the least. It's slowed down by now obviously, but I still see someone leave every now and then.

Sure. That's normal, though, the every now and then leaving part. Do you see new people come in every now and then too? Because we do.

It's never going to be as active here as it was when the game was going strong, but it's been discontinued for as long as it was actively in production at this point (6 years on, 6 years off) and we clearly have a strong community that's interested in being a community for the long haul. The priorities have changed, many of the players have too, but I think we'll be able to stick it out with a reasonable number of folks for the foreseeable future.
C3G has no plans of stopping any time soon, I can tell you that. |

What happens when you run out of super-related customs to make?

Is such a thing even possible?

Also, even if we run out of characters to design (and new versions of them to design) there's always buildings, vehicles, and scenarios (and scenario campaigns).

I just discovered the game about six weeks ago -- so I am very much a latecomer -- but I love playing it with my family. I've picked up a nice RotV Master set and several expansions already, and played a great game today with the AliasQTip designed "Hidden Bases" -- what a great map and scenario! I'm amazed this wonderful game was discontinued -- and really pleased that hardcore fans like y'all have kept the flame burning so that people like me can still participate in the fun. Thanks for not giving up!
