Scaper of the Week 32 - Oogie Da Bruce

Posted July 8th, 2009 at 10:40 PM by rym
Scaper of the Week, the 32nd- Oogie_Da_Bruce

Well, here we are with the latest installment of the Scaper of the Week series. This week we get to find out a little bit more about the man behind the Braveheart avatar (well, to be fair, Robert the Bruce, but I digress), Oogie_Da_Bruce. OBD is one of the admins here on site, for those who may not know (anything's possible, right?), and his interview is quite entertaining and funny.

And I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to the interview next week. Read on to see who Oogie_Da_Bruce nominated.

Our 32nd Scaper of the Week,

Who are you?
With my right foot I can knock out that knife, with my left, I can kick your nose. With this hand, I can poke out your eyes. With this, I can break your neck. Take a good look at my face. They Call Me Bruce?

Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar is Robert the Bruce from Braveheart. My name actually comes from when I first started playing Scape. My wife and I got a new puppy. My wife wanted to call him Bruce but I just called him Ugly (which got shortened to Oogie over time). Yes, I’m named after the dog… I've got a lot of fond memories of that dog.

Age: Old enough to get flak for playing with “toys”, but young enough not to care.

Why else would there be a picture of me posing with Voltron?

Occupation? Bean Counter. Watch. Thirty-two… Thirty-two Scapers of the Week… Ah-Ah-Ah-Ahhhhhhhh!!!

Allegiance and why?
Jandar. I’ve always liked fighting the good fight, something great about standing your ground and defending the weak against horrific foes. But with RotV it was also the WWII figures that pushed it over the top (in honor of my grandfather, Sgt. Christmas Tree).

When did you get into HeroScape and why?
Back in the days of .net, at ToysRUs I was checking out new games and saw RotV. I looked it over, thought it looked neat, but endend up putting it back on the shelf (I was there for something else – funny that I can’t remember what I went for, but remember the first time I saw Scape). Every trip to TRU after that, I would spend a few minutes in the game section with a master set in hand. This went on for about a month. My wife (then girlfriend) then told me, “Just get it already!!!” Thanks babe!!!

It was this purchase (and this game) that single handedly got me into the boardgaming scene and made me some of the best friends I have today.

Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The entire Scape system is great from the figs, to the rules, to the strategy. But it was one element that put it over the top for me: the terrain… the beautiful, stackable, interlocking terrain. The idea of taking this terrain and making a battleground, playing the game, then making a new, different battleground to play a different style of game was just brilliant to me. A lake, a river, a hill, a mountain. What could I make with a set? What could I make with 2 sets? With 14? Add in Forest, Road, Volcano, Castle, Tundra and Jungle… Fuggetaboutit!!!

I spend many a happy hour map building.

A few of those hours went into Elemental Keep.

Favorite Hero and why?
Migol Ironwill. It’s about time Scape got real Dwarves!

Favorite Unique Squad and why?
A.E. for Sgt. Christmas Tree.

Favorite Common Squad and why?
Axegrinders of the Burning Forge. See above.

Favorite Special ability and why?
The ones with flare. I’ve never heard a dull “Chomp”. “Ninja Vanish” and “Krug Smash” are also fun. I am liking the new Concealment ability (or anything to give melee a boost).

Favorite wave 9 unit so far and why?
Anything small. See above. And yes, that includes Repulsors!!!

Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
The “Curving Shot” rule. It has never sat right with me. There is a long standing house rule that “negative space” (space with no hexes) blocks line of sight. No LOS no “Curving Shot”. Also, it really helps out the players with minimal terrain. It add to their range/melee balance by taking OUT terrain.

Deathstalkers or Marrden Hounds?
Deathstalkers for Heroes. Marden Hounds for Squads. But in a Heads Up Match I have to go with the Stalkers and their immunity to Marro Plauge FTW!

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The creativity of its members. There tons of custom figures, maps, scenarios, terrain, fanfics, blogs, contests, etc. Just when you think you’ve seen it all someone goes and runs a playoff bracket!

Just some of the fun times.

Favorite HeroScape moment:
I really hate these “Favorite” questions. I remember so many great moments.

-When I first opened the box, built a map and played a game of Scape.
-When I found .net and met others who loved the game so much.
-The first SoCal Heroscape Gameday and the after party at my place.
-Making my first Epic Map.
-Driving for hours up the California coastline just to Scape.
-Meeting Skynight on his trip out west: Scaping, drinking, and passing out.
-The Team Grudge Castle Match.
-Interviewing Craig at Comic-Con.
-The friends I’ve made playing Scape.

One of those favorite moments.

Another board game you enjoy and why?
Wow… that’s a tough one. My boardgaming palette has grown so much (thanks to Heroscapers). But I think I’m gonna go with Battlestar Galactica. Everyone is involved all the time. You’re either trying to expose the Cylon or hide the fact that you are the Cylon. Trust no one.

Three true things and one lie about yourself:
-I fought 5 Mexican Federales and escaped to America.
-I was a VIP who got everything comped at the hottest clubs in LA.
-My wife is currently pregnant with our second child.
-I have a PHD in Horribleness.

Other interests?
Besides your normal geek stuff (movies, video games, comics, toys, etc), I also like some outdoorsy stuff like hiking in the hills, swimming in the ocean and camping in the mountains.

Animals are also big with me. We have 4 horses, 1 miniature horse, 3 miniature donkeys, 2 mini goats, 3 dogs, a cat, a bunny, and some birds.

Music and beer. Always music and beer.

Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
I’d like to play against any of the Scaper Mob at the Ram. Just keep the dice rolling and beer flowing!!!

What message do you have for the community?
Music and beer people… music and beer.

Seriously though. Just have fun. Don’t get caught up in the pettiness of things. The more time you have grimace on your face, the less time you’re having fun. Take things with a grain of salt (especially online) and you’ll be fine.

Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
~Aldin, you gotta love this guy.

I really hope the first one is a truth. If so, what a fun story, and you HAVE to share it with us all.

Thanks for the interview and taking the time to answer the questions.

I don't think it's possible to have a PhD in horribleness. So 4 is the lie.

Congrats Oogie and Aldin!

PHD could be an acronym for something, like Pensive Neutered Dogs

Rym: Thanks for taking on the SotW duties. I really had a great time thinking about how much Scape (and Scapers) had given to me over the years and being able to share those memories with this community... this community... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Elffy: The world is a mess, and I just need to rule it.

S1R: Balls.

Sky: Can't wait till next time!!! Whoever makes the trip gets the first round free! Hope it's at the Ram.

ABOMINATION: Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.

Arp12: My wife might disagree with you. Might.

I also ogled over the RotV Master Set for several months at my local Walmart before picking it up. I just kept thinking, "That looks really cool! But, the wife would kill me for spending $40 on a board game." Now she's almost as engrosed as I am. Almost. Congradulations, Oogie!

Alias: I know EXACTLY what you mean. At that price tag, I couldn't pull the trigger. A gentle nudge was all I needed. I even remember setting up the map at home and playing against myself. Angel (the wife) took pity on me and played (and beat me half the time). She even went with me the first time I met up with boom. Thank goodness for Game playing wives and girlfriends.

boom: I couldn't have done it without you, brother! When this guy and I met, we hit it off instantly. We played a couple more times, I met BIGJIM (one of boom's dearest friends) and the rest is history. We kept hosting games for whoever wanted to show up (sometimes it was just us). But we didn't stop (so those of you who don't have anyone to play, just keep hosting and posting and you'll eventually meet people, even if it's just looky-loos at the Game Store). Today boom, is one of MY closest freinds and it's thanks to Scape.

Rikk: and THIS guy!!! Cylon!!! I met this guy through Scape too and he is one of my newest and closest friends. I'll explain everything over a game of Descent this weekend... maybe...

arp12, I haven't posted truth's interview because I was asked to hold off on it for awhile. Rest assured, you'll get to read the whole thing, just not yet.

It will be part of a special release coming soon, and that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Does anyone else notice that admins keep picking each other? Truth, hextr1p, Oogie, and now Aldin. Looks like their biased.

Nah, just kidding. I'm enjoying learning about the admins of this wonderful site.
