Board game spam

Posted July 4th, 2009 at 03:00 PM by The B.I.V.
I was browsing my local secondhand shop the other day ('cause I'm thrifty like that) and I came across a Spiderman 3 version of Operation. You know, Operation? The game where you hafta remove parts from a "patient" with a pair of tweezers and if you touch the sides it's all: "BZZZZZZZZZZZTTT!" Well in this version you get to operate on Spiderman and remove parts like "Webbed Feet" and "Crook in the Neck." Wow, I bet it took a genius to think that crap up! The thing that pisses me off is that it's the exact same game! It's the same deal with all the bazillion versions of Monopoly. WHO CARES?! If I wanna play Monopoly I'll play Monopoly, not Transformers Monopoly "cuz I saw tha movie and it wuz so 1337 kewl, dood!" The lame thing is that there are enough people that aren't me, that do buy this crap, "cuz they saw the movie and it wuz so 1337 kewl, dood" that game companies are obviously making money off of these stupid alternate versions! It makes we want to cry tears of blood!!

On a related note, I'm insulted by the fact that Milton Bradley re-released the game, Shogun, as "Samurai Swords." If you haven't heard of "Shogun," you straightup suck. It's one of the Holy Trinity of kickass War Strategy Board Games (the other two being Axis and Allies and Fortress America). If you don't know what a board game is, kill yourself.

Anyway, Shogun is an awesome strategy game set in ancient Japan which many of our beloved Samurai/Ashigaru figs were modeled after). It's basically Risk on steroids (lets face it, Samurai make anything better). So somewhere along the line, some suit-wearing, corporate moron decided that the game needed to be pulled and re-released as "Samurai Swords." It's the exact same game except for the name. The implication is that people are too dumb to know what Shogun means (if you're one of these people, pull your thumb out of your butt and suck it 'til you die), so for all these neanderthals, "Samurai Swords" was much more palatable. The sad thing is that they're probably right. Why does society continually let me down? Now I really want to cry tears of blood....

As far as Monopoly goes, I say all you need is one version. I don't care which one you choose. I have Star Wars monopoly. Just pick one and don't buy any others. You don't need them.

I've heard of Shogun. I've yet to play it, but it's on my list.

Monopoly and Operation have been done over so many times, it's just getting stupid. I mean really? Nintendo is cool and all, but I don't want to play Nintendo Monopoly.

I'm ok with remakes of games, but they have to be different from the original.
I won't want Lord of the Rings monopoly just for the gimmick of owning Helm's Deep instead Board Walk. If they threw in some battle element into it and one player gets to have a ring I might give it a try.

I think I've played Shogun before but I'd have to get an explanation, I've played too many of my uncle's board games when I was a kid to actually remember what I played. (note to self: get your uncle to play heroscape one of these days)

Have you ever played LotR Risk? It has really cool missions, and the game ends when the ring reaches Mordor, not when all the territories belong to 1 person. You've also got missions that give you points, so even if you're first out, you don't necessarily lose. I got 2nd because I was the only other person to complete a mission.

I'm totally with you on this BIV. It was really frustrating to see them (Hasbro) releasing so many different versions of all their other games when Heroscape was really struggling.

Unfortunately, the general public IS dumb enough to fall for all these marketing gimmicks.

Elffy, I have LotR Risk but I haven't played it maybe twice. I enjoy Risk and its various versions, but that's because they DO make different games out of them, not just theme makeovers.
