Webcomic Review: Looking for Group

Posted May 21st, 2008 at 09:56 AM by Firemaster
All right, I think it's now time for my first webcomic review. To begin with, I shall explain how my review system will work. I will look at the webcomics in terms of the following:

Title/Author: Self Explanitory

Update Schedule: What days new pages are posted

Genre: Which genre(s) the webcomic fits into.

Style: I've read many webcomics, and just about all of them can fit into one of 4 styles.

Story-Driven: Has a clear, well defined story that flows smoothly and rarely deviates from the story to post filler type pages. Example: Dreamland Chronicles

Blog Style: Has no story, and there is little continuity between pages. As it suggests, it is a blog done in comic form, so most pages will be on whatever is the latest in the topic of their webcomic. Example: Penny Arcade

Hybrid: A sort of mixture of Story-Driven and Blog style comics. Comics of this sort will usually have some sort of story behind it moving it forward, but will often take breaks to comment on current goings on. Example: Kevin & Kell

Completely Random: Self Explanitory. Example: Perry Bible Fellowship

Art: A page taken from the comic to show what kind of art it has.

Summary: A short summary on what the comic is about.

Comments: My comments on the comic.

With that out of the way, I bring you my first review. I was actually having trouble deciding which I would do first, but Necro made that choice easy. So without further ado, I bring you my LFG review.

Title/Author: Looking for Group, by Sohmer

Update Schedule: Mondays and Thursdays

Genre: Fantasy, Humor

Style: Story-Driven

Summary: LFG follows Cale, Richard, Benny, Krunch and a few others as they try and bring peace to the land, and watch Richard kill stuff, and try to defeat Legarion, and watch Richard make witty comments, and fight giants and dragons, and watch Richard kill stuff in hilarious ways, and watch Richard get the group in trouble, and oh, did I mention watch Richard kill stuff?

Comments: Though Necroblade made my decision easy by suggesting LFG, LFG would have been among the first webcomics I reviewed. It is one of my favourites, and would be my #1 favourite, except I can't decide whether I like LFG or CNTR+ALT+DEL better. Honestly, this comic does have a story, but IMO, it takes the back seat to Richard's antics. In fact, most people (as far as I can tell) don't come back week after week to see the story, they come to see what Richard's going to do next. It's like certain movie types, you don't really care what the story's like, you just want to get to the action. Anyways, though LFG is set in the same world as World of Warcraft, there are very few "in jokes" that would require you to have played the game to know about. So go read LFG, if not for the story, then to see how the bored, undead warlock with almost unlimited power relieves his boredom.

I see my name!

CAD is good, too, but you can't beat the fantasy and Richardness of LFG.

That's dead on.

If you're looking for nominations, I'd be interested in your review of one of my favorites, Schlock Mercenary.

Well, I have a few others in mind that I'd like to do first, but somewhere down the line I think you might see it.

I read a couple of them. Very good. I believe I read some of them before. Made me want to play Overlord after watching Richard.
