C3G Interview - July 2018

C3G Interview
Scapemage
Author: YodaKing & Tornado

Last time we took a little stroll into the past with a classic Scapemage interview. Yodaking and I thought it would be fun to catch up with the freshly reinstated C3G Hero. Let us catch up with the man known as ďScape.Ē

Catch us up. What have you been up to since retiring from C3G?

A lot has happened since I left C3G. I believe I was in early high school (one or two years in) when I stepped down from the project. At that time, my gaming interests were being pulled in a lot of different ways. The New England Heroscape group I was/am a part of began migrating heavily into board gaming, and I followed suit. I was beginning to get really into board games and amass a sizable collection, and now board gaming is my number one hobby. Additionally, my cousin and uncle, who were my mainstay Heroscape partners, gained an interest in D&D 4th edition. That turned into a weekly campaign that ran for 3 years and was a blast to be a part of. I was also getting better at Magic: The Gathering and gaining further interest in playing regularly at my local store.

Once college hit, my life changed a lot, as it does with most college experiences. I had a rough first semester but things turned around immensely when I found a budding board game club at my university. Iím now the president of that club and have been serving on the executive board for over two full years.

During Christmas break this year, my cousin and I thought it would be fun to pull out the Heroscape stuff again. Sure enough, we got back into it pretty quickly and have been playing when Iíve been home on spring break and summer break. It didnít take long for my personal interest and love for the project to draw me back to C3G.

Tell me more about the D&D campaign. What was your character? Or were you the Dungeon Master?

The campaign saw a rotating cast of players and my uncle as the DM. Myself, my cousin, and another friend of ours were regulars throughout the campaign, but we had many faces step in for a few sessions, some for longer stints than others. This led to a really interesting cast of characters and ultimately ended up with my cousin and I running two characters a piece. My main character was Nevitash, a warden who specialized in tanking. I redirected lots of hits toward me, then punished monsters for attacking me. We also had a wizard, a ranger, a barbarian, and a cleric as main party staples. Guest appearances were made by fighters, rogues, paladins, and more, but they didnít stick around for too long.

The story itself was strange. A demon lord was plotting to take over the realm, and we were sent on a few different missions to meet up with contacts leading the resistance. The campaign played out with a heavy focus on the in-between though, so we would spend weeks if not months between towns. We stormed castles, got lost in a jungle, and eventually ended up in the Nine Hells, which is where the campaign came to an end when I went off to college and the other players began to fall through.

Out of the board games in your personal collection and/or the ones in your college groupís rotation, what game do you find yourself playing the most often? What game do you really enjoy playing even if you donít get a chance to play it very much? What is the best game you have for introducing a new player to your board gaming passion (i.e. simple to learn, fast to play, and fun)?

Thatís a pretty tough question. I own about 150 games, and the university club owns almost as many. I think the game that ends up getting played the most for me though is Codenames. Codenames is quick and accessible to everyone, so it often hits the table in between big games or at the beginning/end of the night. My favorite game that I donít play enough is Trickerion: Legends of Illusion. Itís a super-heavy worker placement game about being a magician in the industrial revolution. The game I prefer using to break the ice with new gamers is Ticket to Ride. Itís my all-time favorite game and has simple mechanics while remaining engaging for experienced players.

What will your college degree be in and what do you want/hope to do with it once you have it?

Iím currently studying to have a BFA in Graphic and Information Design with a minor in Photography. I have two years left, for a total of five, due to my universityís cooperative education system. I get to work a full time job instead of taking classes for a 6 month period. Iíve done one co-op already, am starting one next week, and will be doing one more before Iím through.

Any chance you can post some of your pics?

I donít have any problem sharing my professional website. Itís the place to catch my best work.

Was there anything that surprised you when you came back recently to C3G?

A lot of things surprised me actually. Iíd been pretty far removed for nearly five years. One of the biggest things that Iím still getting used to is that the entire cast has changed hands completely, for the most part. None of the current heroes were heroes when I left the project, except Johnny and SirG if I remember properly. It has also been a little strange taking in the amount of new units and their places in the C3G game as a whole. Seeing that projects like Street Fighter and JSA and TMNT actually happened is nice. Iím still finding new units being mentioned in threads every day. The CRB is also very new to me. A competitive eye is not something I am used to using.

You have really jumped back in and are quite active again. What are some of your goals for your return run at C3G?

Iím not sure I have any big goals right now. My main goal is to just stick with it. My passion for Heroscape has recently returned, so Iíd really like to be able to keep up with the project while things like work and school are going on. Iíve been able to work on some characters I never got around to previously, so thatís been a blast.

What are your top 3 comic book based movies?

Easy! Iíve thought about this one a lot.

3. Iron Man Ė The best MCU movie in my opinion also happens to be the first. While I quite enjoy the banter and light comedic style the MCU has taken on, it used to be far more serious and Iím more drawn toward those tones when considering a movie to be good.

2. Logan Ė This movie was unexpectedly incredible. Iíve not read Old Man Logan, so the plot was mostly a surprise to me. This is a raw X-Men movie that really dives deep into its characters and broke boundaries for the superhero genre.

1. The Dark Knight Ė I share a popular opinion here, as The Dark Knight currently rests at #4 on the IMDB Top 250 movies of all time rankings. Nolanís entire trilogy is amazing, but this film is the best of the best. Everything about it is captivating, from the sound design to the plethora of veiled symbolism present. Iíve seen this one a few times (more than most movies for me), but itís due for a few more.

Science Fiction or Fantasy?

This one is a lot tougher. I donít keep a running ranking of sci-fi/fantasy movies like I do for superheroes and a few other things. Hereís a rough rank for the moment.
3. Blade Runner
2. Interstellar
1. The Prestige

Which spaceship would you most want to hitch a ride on? Millennium Falcon, Serenity, Enterprise, or Milano?

All good options! Iíd have to go with the Falcon though. Solo gave some interesting insight into the Falcon, and Serenity always had a few renegades in it anyways.

Any last words of advice or reflective insight to fellow Heroscapers out there?

My best advice to íScapers is to keep playing. The game doesnít draw a sizable amount of new players now due to its unavailability, so we have to keep the community going. Keep playing games. Keep designing custom maps, custom units, custom terrain. Keep posting on Heroscapers. Connect with each other. Itís a great experience and one I definitely appreciate.

Tornado pulled a fast one on us - literally - and managed to get this in a month early. Hence the 'July' in the title. There should still be an August Interview as normal.

Always nice to see another fan of Nolan's extended catalog. The Prestige doesn't get the love it deserves. What an awesome movie.

I'd totally go Enterprise, though. The other ones all sound scary!

Really dig some of those inferred photos, the purple and orange ones are my favorites. Then the landscape pic with the red bulbs covered in snow and the action pic of the dice rolling are pretty sweet too. Thanks for sharing Scape!

Glad you like it! This interview was good fun for me. My old one didn't do it justice.

Nice interview scape. Boardgames as a general thing has certainly taken me away from HS. But I put that more down to the fact that there are people here that play boardgames but not so HS.
Cool photos mate. Looks like you are headed in a great direction for your career. And sounds like you are putting the effort in. Keep that up.
I, like Bats, would've went with the Enterprise. The technology onboard just seems way cooler.

Hard to beat a food replicator and holodeck, right?
Yeah, a lot easier to get board games into play than Heroscape around here too.

Cool interview, Scapemage!
Honestly, though, none of those spaceships are doing it for me - I'd take a fifth option and go for the White Star!
