ĎScaper of the Month: dok
Author: Fi Skirata

Profile:

Who are you really?

Letís call me Adam T ... no, thatís too obvious, letís say A. Tarr.

How old are you?
Iím 38.

What is your occupation?
Currently I work in the embedded software group at a medical device company. My degrees are in Electrical Engineering.

What other interests do you have?
Iím really into Ultimate (Frisbee). Itís a fantastic sport, which Iíve been playing since college. Since my second son was born, I haven't been able to travel to play as much (Gencon is my only solo vacation each year), but I still play in local leagues. Iíve recently started playing disc golf a bit more as well.

Whatís another board game you enjoy and why?
I have really gotten into the Plaid Hat Games offerings of Summoner Wars and Ashes. Both are great games from a great company and scratch a lot of the same itches as Heroscape. Iíve gotten involved in the playtesting group for both of them.

Heroscape:

When and how did you get into Heroscape?
I was spending a weekend up in the mountains early in the fall of 2008, and one of my friends we were staying with had gotten RotV as a gift. Even though we got a bunch of rules wrong, I immediately recognized that there was a lot of strategic depth to the game. I found Heroscapers.com the next week, and I started getting my own ĎScape almost immediately.

How did you get started in C3V?
I applied to join when it started, but they decided to go with some of the more established custom makers and C3G vets instead at the time. However, I was making a ton of customs in those days, and after a few months they decided to bring me in house.

Is there any figure that you would change, given the chance?
C3V/SoV figure? Well, there are some that I would change a bit here or there if I were to do it again, but I kind of view that the same way I view the official figures at this point. We only really change released figures when thereís a legitimate issue that needs to be addressed.

What is your favorite C3V/SoV figure?
So many to choose from! Iím still partial to the Vark squads as a faction. I have had a lot of fun with Ebon Armor builds. Lately Iíve had fun with Tomb Skeleton Archers and with Deathstalkers and the Deathcommander. I like builds that give you lots of decisions.

Being a member of both C3V and C3G, what has been your favorite aspects about these customs groups and their processes?
Despite many similarities between the two projects, they are very different experiences. In general, the process of getting an individual design from conception to completion in C3V is much harder. Not only do you not have an established theme set to work from, but the business of balancing the design is often much more fraught. Nevertheless, what C3G has doneótaking the Heroscape engine and creating, really, the best superhero-themed miniatures game in existence, with just those 10 designs to start fromóis really an unbelievable accomplishment. It might be the most impressive single thing to come out of the Heroscapers community.

Which character or unit would you most like to see enter the halls of C3G next?
Hard to say. I have a few public designs out there, so you can see my interests there. My comics exposure is kind of funny because I read a fair amount of comics when I was a kid, through early high school, but I havenít collected anything since then. So a lot of the designs Iíd immediately think to add are throwback heroes. My one lead design, Meggan, was in the Excalibur series I read when I was a kid.

What is your favorite C3G special ability and why?
Gosh thatís tough. I love Ozymandiasís The Smartest Man in the Worldóitís really powerful, it drips with theme, and I love the guessing games involved in using it. Iím also a sucker for some of the e-glyph powers, like the Cosmic Cube and the Amulet of Damballah.

You have had a lot of success in the tournament world of ĎScape, both offline and online. Do you have any advice for budding tournament competitors?
Understand the strengths and weaknesses of your army. Why is each unit in your army there? What is that part of the army strong against? What is it weak against? If you understand those things, itís a lot easier to figure out what your strategy should be in each individual game.

Community:

What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
At this point Iíd say the friends Iíve gained through the site. Itís been a part of my life for well over 7 years now, and I consider many of the people Iíve met there to be good friends.

Describe your favorite Heroscape moment.
The best moment will be when I start playing with my sons.

Is there any member of Heroscapers.com youíd really like to play against?
At this point, between online and Gencon Iíve played against most of the big names. Iíve still never gotten a game against Jexik or killercactus or ollie, all of whom I think I mentioned the first time I did one of these, so I guess they are still on the list.

Last Monthís Lie Detector:
TREX:
  1. I have multiple AK47s
  2. I like to play chutes and ladders
  3. Iím a democrat
  4. My favorite color is pink

Three Fun Favorites:

Favorite Television Show:
Probably Game of Thrones. I donít watch many series these days.

Favorite Comic:
Gosh, I dunno, I donít really collect anything these days. I bought a Bizarro comic a little while back, and my older son (7 now) really enjoyed it.

Favorite Song:
Another one I donít really know. I just fired up my Pandora stationóthe last three thumbed up tracks were by Beck, Ben Folds, and Echo and the Bunnymen, and the first three songs played were by Radiohead, Cake, and the Shins. That gives you a decent slice of what Iím listening to, I guess.

Closing:

What message do you have for the ĎScaper community?
Keep playing and doing great stuff. Itís wonderful how vibrant this community still is, five years after WotC pulled the plug.

Whom do you pick for the next ĎScaper of the Month?
An online vet and active community member who recently jointed my local scene as well: capsocrates.

Thanks again for your time!

We apologize for the lack of a lie detector. Our excuse is simple: it was forgotten.

Nice interview! dok was overdue (as is caps!). It's been really great how dok and company have stepped in and given us the competitive player's perspective over at C3G.
