hang the new guy

Hang the new guy

Thereís a new guy here at work. We really needed another person to help with the work and heís most welcome.

I liked him immediately, though heís young enough to be my son. He wears his hair in a small pony tail and comes to work on a skateboard. Heís in his twenties, competent and polite but I admit he does seem a little young. Itís not the skateboard, which I think is funny, or the pony tail Ė who really cares- but itís the fact that he uses his motherís email. That seems a little strange to me. Iím a bit Quasatch- i have techno rage- but even I accept email. Is it a warning sign?

This job is a crazy job and it honestly takes people at least a year to get their footing. A big part of it is because management is a disorganized disaster. Imagine a semi truck full of marbles crashing and all the marbles rolling onto the highway, thousands and thousands of them. Now imagine one legged ambulance attendants hopping through the marbles to help the truck driver who is both drunk and already dead. I guess thatís a complex image, that doesnít really make sense- see itís perfect! This place is too complicated. And it doesnít make sense. And you have to lose your marbles to work here.

The new guy accepted all of the confusion, mismanagement and disorganization without an eyebrow raise. He needed a job. Plus he has a great attitude. He can roll with whatever problems and do his best.

You can see where this is heading right? The new guy is going to be lynched, flayed, blamed and shot out of a cannon. Why? Because heís new.

It started last week. Management decided that no new employees would be given keys to the building. Instead, they would borrow keys when they had to open the facility. They didnít tell the new guy. He didnít clue in either, which I will excuse because of his youth and his pony tail being too tight. So he showed up on a Saturday and the building was locked and important clients showed up and the new guy didnít have any keys or anyoneís phone number except for one guy who was on vacation in Panama.

It became quite ugly, with the CEO becoming involved and the management here looking stupid and incompetent in front of everyone. Was it the new guys fault? A little bit, I think.

To his credit he did try. He called the emergency help line, which is closed on weekends- not very helpful. He asked another tenant of the building to let him in but because he was new they didnít recognize him and thought he was a scammer. In the end it all worked out and management looked really bad.

Now management is launching an inquiry to see what went wrong, because, of course, it couldnít be their fault. Iím sort of semi management- meaning i have all the responsibility but none of the pay or perks. The down side or upside is that I do get to hear what management is thinking. I refuse to participate in things which I feel are wrong- Iím not a hero, itís just not difficult. I just pretend to be incompetent and stupid on some issues and they donít notice. (or maybe they do)

Anyway, theyíve decided that the new guy is mentally challenged. That he has learning disabilities and will never amount to anything. They are looking for a way to sideline him or dump him. Fortunately their gross incompetence often means that nothing is ever really done. Managers just talk a lot behind close door and then do nothing around here.

Will the new guy get sacked? I donít think so.
But it really bothers me that he is being labelled and processed for something that wasnít really his fault. He is inexperienced. But heís also smart and competent. No one has complained about the actual work he has done- much of it with limited resources. All that is ignored. He is being judged on one event that wasnít entirely his fault. Management looked bad, so like some slow bloated beast, they are slowly winding up to strike back.

I am able to stand up for the new guy in the most backward of ways. When they say he should be dismissed, I remind them that there is no one to replace him. That shuts them up. We need him. We could hire someone else i suppose - management keeps talking about that, but never does anything about it.

So heís safe for the time being. If he has any sense heíll keep looking and find a job someplace else.

Let the new guy open, but without keys and then get mad when he cannot get in. Brilliant.
