Notes from Jamaica

Wha Gwan!

Greetings from Paradise! Hey chas, Sherman, Taeblewalker, and all 'Scapers everywhere - This is where they should hold GenCon! Between swims in the ocean off the cliffs at Blue Cave Castle (our home away from home in Negril, Jamaica, mon), hanging with friends we've made over the years who, like us, return to Negril and or Blue Cave Castle every year around this time, visiting and/or partying with local residents at Blue Cave and/or on the cliffs and mountains nearby, where many of them live, playing Jamaican dominoes and Croquet, eating freshly killed and cooked, barrel jerk chicken and callaloo, while gazing at gorgeous sunsets, bright stars, and moonlit water, I have somehow found the time to follow with interest the discussions in the various forums.

Heroscape, including all the Classic and VC units in existence, and the last version of Delta/Delta+ (adding units released since then at their card values) - as it is now - is, for me, a nigh perfect combination of challenge, fun and creativity. Whatever it's flaws, now or in the future, Heroscape cannot be "ruined" for me - I have made it my own. I restrict my play to roughly once a month with like-minded friends, cherry-picking from all that is good and letting the chaff go, refusing to throw the baby out with the bath water. I spend an obsessively inordinate amount of time, however, building maps, creating scenarios, and building armies. I have been fortunate, I know, to be able to 'Scape with relatively responsible and supportive fellows for so long, and for us to have grown exponentially in our knowledge and enjoyment of 'Scaping. Sadly, the Gang of Four is being reduced to Three, as Taeblewalker is leaving our little group indefinitely. Chas is far more eloquent than I - see his post in the Heroscape General Forum - about the quality of the time we spent 'Scaping, and the unusual nature of the group. His kindness and generosity of spirit will be sorely missed, as will the unique perspective he brought to the table. I have only recently begun hosting the Gang at my place, with great enjoyment as anyone reading my blog posts can attest, and it remains to be seen how often the remaining Three will be able to gather together at one time in the future.

So. Children. Really? It is difficult for me to be too concerned about my Deathcommander's big base or Hasbro's intentional sabotage of the Axegrinders' card, not to mention 'Scape's "ruination" during what is euphemistically referred to as it's D&D period, in the Final Days before the end of the Hasbro/WotC Domination. Rebase, rebuild, repaint, use poker chips to support figures on ladders (a chas idea), exercise that abstract suspension of disbelief that attracted you to the game in the first place, and get over your petty personal eclectic concerns. Does it really reinvent the wheel or break the game? If it is good, play it; if not, don't. First rule of play (and my marriage, but that's another story): have fun!

We are so fortunate to have among us so many creative, responsible and dedicated 'Scapers among us, doing so much of the work for us, as we create our personal and collective versions of the game - how could the future of 'Scape be anything but extremely bright?

Scape on, Dudes!

Great blog, pal. I'm sorry to have left the Gang of Four, but I will try to come down to play some time. I'm not that far away.

And I'm glad you're enjoying Jamaica, mon!

K.,

Glad you've been following from down there. The blue Caribbean is even more beautiful in my memory when I glance out the window as I type this, and see the snow falling gently on the slush below. Merry Christmas, buddy--have an umbrella drink for me!

PS: Its my birthday next Tuesday, but I'll never catch up to you...

Great blog as always. Your logic is flawless.

I am not sure if I would get any gaming in if Gen Con were in Jamaica. I have a hard time breaking free of the action in Indy.

I would love to make there someday.
