The Problem of Wolverine

Posted April 23rd, 2013 at 08:28 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
No serious Scaper can ignore Marvel forever, especially with all of the work that the C3G has done. I would not consider myself particularly interested in Super Heroes, yet they have been appearing on our battlefields for a while now.

T’’other day we saw one of the X Men movies and surprise-surprise a fellow by the name of Wolverine appeared in our game the next day.

Wolverine seems full of potential problems. Obviously the dude regenerates, but can he die? We were of mixed opinion- some thought that if you cut him up small enough and scattered him, he was lost forever. Others suggested that if you cut his head off he’d grow a new head. Can a person who regenerates constantly ever really die? I have read that if you break a leg off of a starfish, the leg grows a new star and the star a new leg. How can Wolverine play in our game if he can’t be destroyed?

The next problem, a minor one in comparison, was that we had no suitable figure to be Wolverine. Many suggestions were made and then things started to get silly. In the end, the majority ruled and a cake was chosen to represent Wolverine.

The truth behind the cake was that it was a protest at the creation of an overpowered figure. Our game is still different than your game and over powered dudes are sometimes not much fun. We were trying to be open minded enough to let Mr. Claws have a chance.... but he had to be a cake.

We looked at the Book of Wolverine here on the site. Of particular interest to me, as stated above, is his regeneration and dying skills. Healing Factor X looks well and nice but unfortunately we don’t use order markers. Well, we use them, just not what they’re designed for.

My eldest son is a custom designer extraordinaire with a flair for the powerful. I tend to create average and below units because they’re cheap and I have fun playing with them. Anyway, my eldest son presented us with four special powers for Wolverine: Adamantium Claws, Double Attack, Double Regenerate and Undeath.

You know adamantium claws (from the C3G card) ,double attack and double regenerate is simple enough. In our game each person takes a turn with every unit they have if they wish, and then it’s the other player’s turn. Wolverine would recover from two wounds after his turn.

Undeath , is just what it says. Wolverine cannot die. In our game he has six life, and when he reaches six wounds, he lays down on the field. After his turn he double regenerates, and only has four wounds and he is alive again.

We have played too many different versions and scenarios to count, always keeping the best parts as we build our hybrid game. We have played with necromancers and with beasties that lie eggs in the dead- our dead stay on the field- so it was determined at some point that dead bodies can be attacked and destroyed. Usually their defence is 50% of the alive figure’s. You would do this to stop your fatalities from rising again under the influence of a necromancer. So therefore Wolverine’s dead body could be attacked, and possibly take on even more wounds.

How would this play out? When dead, could we station someone beside him to attack his dead body every turn so he was never able to regenerate enough to stand? Would Undeath allow him to take endless wounds, like sixteen or forty-seven?

Sometimes I can’t think out the wrinkles in proposed powers – my sons seem to be better at that- instead i just want to put them in battle and test them.

So our cakey Wolverine hit the field. The scenario was an abandoned ancient city. My middle son had worked hard building an aqueduct for the place. It was a beautiful map with a lot of road but it had two choke points and much of the fighting took place near the aqueduct gate and the main entrance.

It seems there are two ways we deal with figures that we are suspicious of – we either gang up on them and kill them right away or ignore them. We were playing capture the flag and the cake, I mean Wolverine, just got ignored. Why bother attacking a guy that you can’t kill? He’ll just double attack you with his adamantium claws. Better to stay far away from him, or engage him with throwaway units and keep him tangled and away from the main action where he might actually do some real harm.

The end result after three games was that Wolverine was a lot of points but didn’t really seem worth them. A cake too sweet for our tastes....

I suppose I should finish up with some good cake jokes and puns. But are there really any good ones?

“A lot of movies are about life, mine are like a slice of cake.” –Alfred Hitchcock

“The most dangerous food is wedding cake.” –James Thurber

“But how will I eat cake if my head is over there, and my hands are over here?” – Marie Antoinette
(too bad she didn’t have double regenerate and Undeath)

I would suggest that he simply heals one wound per end of his turn, and that he does die. Much better.

Love the cake. And I agree with Mega, that he should be able to *die*.

Knowing your game, the way I do. I'd say keep track of how many hits he takes over zero. And if he cannot heal back to one with double-regen...he's done! (Place extra wound markers on card, at the end of the turn, see if you can remove enough to get out of the hole)

Anyhow, Sylvano would you like a Wolverine...I have several extas in many different varieties I could drop one off one day when I'm in Windsor.

Taking punches and falling down "defeated" is not the same thing as being flamethrowered, disintegrated, teleported into outer space, etc. Maybe only some of your casualties should remain, depending on how they are defeated. And Wolverine could be permanently removed if destroyed by such powers. Which are more common when you have more supers on the table. I don't do this, but you might.

I do think that Supers and Classic are compatible, as does Sherman Davies, against the opinion of many site members (and our pal Kolokoski), but our customs are often not as many points as the C3G. All this is said in consideration of your own custom games, not "standard" Classic/Custom Scape play. Here in Brooklyn, the New York Gang of Four does not do tournaments either, so we are free to experiment. See my recent threads in Custom Comic Creations and Battle Reports for how I'm handling Supers. We've also recently experimented with what I call "Pulp Adventure," where any supers used cannot be over 200 Points, and are usually in the minority (see 'Chas Does Pulp Adventure' in Battle Reports).

The "New York Gang of Four does not do tournaments"

. . . except this year, we're going to Islandscape! We're gonna practice, aren't we, chas?

I meant that we don't do tournament play as our regular Scape setting, as Sylvano does not with his kids, either.

Lightly frosted carrot cake Wolverine, as featured in Giant-Sized X-Men #15!

Multiplayer games are weird. People get ignored and ganged up on and betrayals are the norm. ZB seems to have a good idea to weaken Cake Wolverine, though reducing his defense to 0-1 would work too. With only 2 life he would get wounds easily and "die", but he could heal and return if his body is ignored.
