Spring 'Scape's Busting Out All Over-er!

Posted April 21st, 2013 at 01:50 PM by kolakoski
Well met!

The Gang's Three Gates Battle is past, a new date has not been chosen, but, for sure, it will be at chas' place, so there is no immediate impetus for building another map, and yet . . .

As the relatively cold spring continues, "Scape still abides in the forefront of my thoughts (although I did manage to get in an afternoon practicing Kanku Kata, recently, after my sensei called me out for neglecting it last week in class).

I thought I was done buying 'Scape for a while, after all my recent aquarium accessory purchases (the Gates pictured above), but then

There is an old man who sells stuff at our local farmers' market on Roosevelt Island on Saturdays when the weather is good. My wife has purchased countless small pieces of furniture and other household knick knacks for years, spending countless hundreds of dollars (when we both had jobs). I had long ago asked him to look out for Heroscape, to no avail. So I was totally ed to see, stacked on a table with a giant Doctor Doom action figure and other assorted game stuff, unopened boxes of Swarm of the Marro (with an old $59.95 sticker still on it) and an un-priced mint condition Road to the Forgotten Forest! He asked me what I wanted to pay, and I offered $30 for the SotM, and asked him to throw in the RttFF for free. He countered by asking for $40, which I eagerly paid. I asked my wife if I should feel badly about taking such advantage, and, before the words were half way out of my mouth, she said, "Nope!"

I posted the above on April 6th in Heroscape: What's your latest acquisition?. Since then, I found these Minotaurs (Safari miniatures, $12.95 for both) at a going-out-of-business sale

for which I found the perfect card (by
siroswald)

and went to Auggies, searched for (and found) and bought the last remaining Great Evergreen (as adding the SotM to my collection had left me with three Great Evergreens) to balance the numbers for symmetrical map building.

Of course I could not justify paying shipping for only one piece, so I added six Lava Field 2-hexers, a Rock Outcrop (giving me four, total), a Rock Stalagtite (giving me two, total), and, taking advantage of their surprise appearance, the only available squad of Shaolin Monks (giving me two, total)
. As my birthday had just passed (March 31st), I felt OK about going over to Miniature Market and purchasing the Solaris Pack containing Deathcommander Mark 3, one of my favorite C3V releases. And all of this cost me less than $100!

I thought to post these in
Heroscape: What's your latest acquisition?, and found that no one had posted in the thread since I had. It got me to wondering why. Is it now considered bad form to post there, a form of bragging, gloating or worse? Or are recent purchasers so jaded that they don't consider their latest acquisitions worthy of note?

To me, my recent acquisitions are a big deal, worthy of celebration, and, with respect to the terrain, increase that available for map building by 15-20%, with the new Evergreens (two Great, four regular) doubling the total number (four Great, eight regular, in total). chas said (in a recent email):

Nice going! I'll expect to see the terrain on future boards at your place!

And so may you!

Meanwhile
, I am gratified by the growing, and much deserved, acceptance of C3V and Delta/Delta+ by the Community. Before the appearance of Delta/Delta+, especially, my interest in 'Scape was beginning to wane, due to my frustration with the impact of the inequities of Classic pricing on competitive army building (documented and argued over ad nauseum elsewhere). chas is planning a Heroscape scenario patterned after Game of Thrones. I told chas that, based on the likely units, most of the Westeros forces were under-priced in Classic - Knights and Dragons - while the
White Walkers/Zombies forces were, if anything, over-priced in comparison. Things are going to be tough enough for them anyways, as the Dragons would be practically the only ranged units in the game. At least with Delta+, Westoros would have to pay for its power. We'll see . . .

P.S.: As Karate Camp is on the weekend of July 12th this year, I'll be able to attend
Long Island Heroscape League- IslandScape Tournament July 21!

I think the Minotaurs are cool. Too bad there's a guy who never allows non VC customs in our games. Wait a minute...that would be...you.

The Right of Inconsistency

Well met!

Not in general, but when I am the Host, I retain the right to be inconsistent and arbitrary! You forget - I did allow you to use some of your own customs a couple gatherings ago. If I should decree that the Brothers Tor are allowed, you may - as before - petition for a custom of your own.

See my new Conan, Red Sonja, and Barbarian Horde II. Now rampaging on a supers customs thread near you! 750 points includes them all for a complete army--only three cards/12 spaces with lots of synergy! And they could just as easily be considered non-supers, if it makes you feel more comfortable with them. On the other hand, you're not supposed to feel particularly comfortable with Barbarians.
