Scaper of the Week Interview #63
Many Scapers knows him as the "Wrecker of Wednesdays" for his "gloom and doom" prophecies about the nigh end of Heroscape. Many told him he was wrong, it was "merely a phase," WotC was only "trying to make it through the lean time." Then the it was announced....
But I ask that we don't hold a grudge against him, for he merely was more realist than we were. At this time, he has actually came around to like some DnD units (with his son's help
).
So give a warm round of applause for:
-Scaper of the Week #63 -

Who are you? Don Squires
Who, or what, is your avatar and how did you come up with your username?
My avatar is a picture of the cast of the anime series Cowboy Bebop. I'm not really a fan of anime, but this show has caught my attention.
My username is a tip of the hat to my scottish heritage and my grandfather. My maternal grandfather is a direct decendant of the scottish clan Campbell. Oddly enough, it wasn't my first choice. However the name I wanted was taken, but I've never seen that person post.
Age: 33
Occupation?
I'm the parts manager for a local heating and air company. Not too exciting, but it's a living.
Allegiance and why?
Anybody but Valkrill.
When did you get into HeroScape and why?
I first saw Heroscape way back, when Toys R Us had it in the bubble display. I thought it looked cool, but couldn't justify spending the 40 bucks at the time. About 2 weeks later, my brother shows up at my place, all excited about a cool new game he got. Sure enough, he had bought ROTV. We played, and I was hooked. My brother no longer plays, but if it weren't for him, I wouldn't be into it.
Favorite aspect of HeroScape and why?
The mis-mash of units. Samurai fighting elves fighting orcs fighting robots fighting you name it. So cool. It helps that heroscape is easy to learn, yet complex enough to keep adults interested.
Favorite Unique Hero and why?
Ne-Gok-Sa. My original favorite. Not real sure why, I just gravitated to him. Maybe he mindshackled me into liking him.
Favorite Uncommon Hero and why?
Werewolf Lord. They really captured the theme of werewolves with this guy. Plus it's a bad a$$ looking figure. Haven't got to try one yet, but my son won the pack that he's in at a recent event, so maybe.
Favorite Common Hero and why?
Swog Rider. Makes gruts good. Alright, makes them at least playable.
Favorite Unique Squad and why?
Airborne Elite. I'm a bit of a history buff, with WWII being one of my favorite periods. So these guys scratch that itch.
Favorite Common Squad and why?
Marro Drones. Move and attack with 9, sign me up. OK so you need a hot D20, but what the hay.
Favorite Special Ability and why?
Disengage. It can be game changing if well executed.
Which Wyrmling?
None of the above. To be fair, I haven't really looked at them much, so I can't choose one.
Anything you'd change about the game - a unit, rule, or mechanic?
Nah, Scape is great as is.
What do you enjoy most about Heroscapers.com?
The people. I try to get to a tourney at least once a month. I see some of the tourney regulars more than some of my own family. We're like an extended family. We're all here for the love of Scape.
Favorite HeroScape moment:
Playing Anthony Jr. (Onacara's son) at the 09 Saratoga Slugfest. Our game was epic.
Another board game you enjoy and why?
Man, I like alot of games. Settlers of Catan, Axis and Allies (the original), Battle Ball, Claustrophobia.
Three true things and one lie about yourself:
1. I went to Spain when I was 5.
2. I used to be quite an avid D&D player. (The RPG)
3. I am fluent in 4 languages.
4. I have 7 siblings.
Other interests?
Reading (Sci-fi and fantasy mostly), Pokemon CCG, RPGs.
Five Fun Favorites
Favorite TV Show: Modern Family.
Favorite Movie Of All Time:
Just one? How about top 5, in no particular order. Star Wars ANH, Empire Strikes Back, Braveheart, K-PAX, American Beauty.
Favorite book:
Any of the 4 from George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.
Favorite sport: Football.
Favorite food:
Crab Cakes. Just like grandma used to make.
I'd say that you became well known on this site for your "doom and gloom" posts shortly after the DnD Master set was announced. What gave you the hint that it may happen?
Well WOTC has long been known as a company of 2 games, D&D and Magic, almost to the exclusion of everything else. So when they went to D&D for Scape, I really felt they wouldn't go back.
How did you feel when the game was officially cancelled?
I was angry, just like everyone else. I wanted to hope that classic could come back. I was also shocked that they didn't run the D&D thing longer.
How do you think your reaction would have changed if Classic Scape was brought back instead of cancelled? (That your prediction didn't come true?)
I would have been overjoyed. The thing is, I wanted to be wrong. I hoped I was wrong. I would have admitted I was wrong and embraced the new classics with open arms.
You once said you never would buy any DnD units, but I have heard that you fell for the Lizardfolk. What made you change your mind?
My son actually. He saw them and said "These guys don't look so bad; let's get them Daddy." How do you say no? They are pretty neat though.
Any Heroscapers member you'd really like to play against?
Revdyer.
What message do you have for the community?
Scape will not die, unless we let it. The tourney scene in my region is actually expanding, so this game can thrive.
What Units would you like to see in the next Unit Debate?
How about Agent Carr vs. Tandros Kreel?
Who do you pick for the next 'Scaper of the Week?
Multi-time MD/PA/NJ tourny winner and guy that needs just 3 letters: TOM.

Congratulations!Well met!
I must admit that I expect[ed] Clancampbell to be a Classic blowhard from his appearance in the whole D&D 'scape Donnybrook. (I was also shocked to discover that he is barely more than half my age, rather than a curmudgeon.) But he has kids, buys and plays 'scape for and with them, and his favorite books are the Song of Fire and Ice, the first of which I am re-reading as we speak, in anticipation of the "coincidental" events of the publication of the [last?] book in the series and the first episode of HBO's miniseries of the first book. How bad could he be? I am delighted to say that I will have the chance to find out at his tournament this coming weekend. I have hopes of being egregiously rude, and taking first place, but I'll settle for bringing my "A" game. Anyways, congratulations again on your selection, Clan, and I look forward to crossing armies with you. |

Here's another question, clancampbell:
What was the first username you were planning on taking for this site? MegaSilver |

Thanks Kolakoski, I see we share a love of George Martin novels, as well as scape. I do hope we get a chance to match up on Sat. (Of course with the format that is a very real possibility.)
MegaSilver, I've had a long running RPG character by the name of Wildcard. (Almost 11 years now, I think that far exceeds the average life expectantcy of most RPG characters.) Anyhow, Wildcard is usually my username for any message boards or the like. |

Glad to see you as the SoTW, CC.
I absolutely will make it to one of your tourneys this year... maybe... possibly. ![]() As for the truth and lie, I am guessing the "fluent in 4 languages" is probably the untrue one. |

Well deserved, Clan. Congratulations.
I'll say the lie is #3, and the guy who's very heroic is Alastair MacDirk. ![]() |

Harrumph. Not sure, but after reading this, it sounds like something Clan's grandmother would have picked out for him.
![]() You are apparently assuming the hints are in order, which they may be, but maybe not. "Dad," indeed. I am, it turns out, only 7 years Clan's senior. ![]() |
