Clancampbell's Multiplayer Madness Mine!

Posted March 30th, 2011 at 10:29 AM by kolakoski
Well met!

The Gang of Four is traveling together to Clan's tourney on 4/16/11 (link below), necessitating an overnight stay in Baltimore ("I think this is the end of a beautiful friendship").

At least chas talked me out of bringing a map ("anyone crossing 3 state lines to get to a tourney shouldn't have to worry about @#$% terrain" [or words to that effect ]), so Dad's prophecy concerning it (three and a half hours on my lap) can't happen .

Initially, I was thinking of playing Phantom Knights (which Dad coincidentally won with in a similar Clan event not too long ago), but with other melee units, in hopes of impressing through my brilliant play with less than the best army I could field.

Since then, I have come to realize, through recent experience (chas' comments to the contrary ), that I'm not all that brilliant. [Not to mention stubborn and impatient, upon occasion.]

Dad was foolish enough to mention a Battle Report he had written about his success at the aforementioned event, which detailed the importance of points per wound. I came up with the following army:

Spoiler Alert!

Analysis below.

Given the scenario, and the competition (and dok's advice ), I'll probably field this one.

However, I recently acquired 2 squads of Heavy Gruts that might be useful.

Spoiler Alert!

dok said, "[i]t's an extremely aggressive army by multiplayer standards, but with the point scoring format in play, that's not necessarily a bad thing." It is, however, not as easy, being all melee, as the previous one. But I'll feel bad if I don't take dok's advice (i.e., I think he likes the second army best, but I could be wrong), as helpful as he's always been, and as good as his advice always is, in terms of fielding the most powerful army possible for a given scenario and/or core set of units. But this is a Big Deal tournament, for which we are traveling hundreds of miles, and we want to do well, and, of course, impress the locals . What to do; what to do; what to do . . . ?

Honestly, I don't like the inclusion of rats in the first army. The rats primary function is to screen, with 2 or 3 opponents per game, you'll have more troops coming at you from different sides than one squad of rats can handle.

Given a choice of the 2, I'd prefer the second. I'd even go so far as to say I like your idea of including Syvarris in build #2. You'll want your Gruts and Grimnak out there killing things (and more importantly, scoring points). Giving up an order marker to help move Raelin along might be a bad idea.

Here I am, giving up all my secrets.
