Night Raid! - A Valhalla Society Adventure

Well met!

Another Valhalla Society Adventure for your consideration and entertainment:

[A while back, before I discovered Legacy, I was advocating in favor of the CUC. It was suggested to me that I create a scenario to favor the units I considered over priced, rather than adopting CUC modifications (or any other kind). Later, of course, the same sort of advice was given relative to Legacy, with the added filip of a blanket questioning of the creativity, imagination, etc., of those advocating its adoption (by one individual, I forget who ). Anyways, I was momentarily miffed. However, once begun, this scenario writes itself, so I'll just get out of the way.]

Night Raid!

The Legionnaire attempted to see what had made the faint noise he had heard in the distance, but it was hopeless. He was fortunate to be able to see his own hand, given the night and the fog. He shuddered from more than the cold as a harrowing sense of deja vu overcame him. A night in Brittania identical to this one had been the last he remembered before awakening in Valhalla. The last sound he had heard then was the same too . . .

The Map.

[New picture to come]

In the center of the map is the Compound, representing the Legion's camp. Lit areas are designated by Sand and Road. There are 4 Portals on the 4 corners of the Map. There are 2 Pillars of Power.

The Setup.

Any number of players (2-4) each fielding 500 points (or any other total acceptable to all players) entering from its own Portal [and Valhalla Society restrictions (see link below)*].

http://www.heroscapers.com/community...lhalla+society

Within the Compound: 3 squads of Roman Legionnaires, plus Marcus and the Venoc Warlord. These are setup in unlit hexes. There are 2 Prisoners Chained to the Pillars of Power: Ogre Warhuk and Shurrak. There is also a Nilfeim on top of a 5-hex high pedestal. The Prisoners and Nilfeim are set up in lit areas. The scenario takes place at night and there is a thick fog. Ranged attacks are not possible except into and within the lit areas. Thus a unit can shoot into a lit hex, but not into an unlit one under any circumstances (except adjacency).

The Play.

Players roll for initiative, and take their turns normally, except that they first choose a Portal, from which all their units will enter the Map (as though starting from the Portal hex). Any unit that has not entered the Map by the beginning of the fourth Round may not enter at all (and is considered lost). At the end of each turn, the players roll to determine who will take a turn with either the Romans (and Marcus or the Venoc Warlord as per normal bonding rules) or Nilfeim (together, the Neutral Force). When taking a turn with Nilfeim, he cannot be moved from his pedestal. The Romans may not attack Nilfeim; Nilfeim may not attack the Romans.

Upon moving any of his units adjacent to a Prisoner that has not thus far been Rescued, a player may Rescue that Prisoner by destroying the Chain that binds it (Life 3, Defense 3). Once the Chain has been destroyed, control of the Prisoner's army card immediately reverts to that player, and becomes one of that player's units. In addition, at the moment of Rescue, the Rescuing player may immediately take a turn with the Rescued Prisoner, resuming his turn afterwards. No Prisoner may be Mindshackled, Lycanthropized, Enslaved, or otherwise controlled prior to being Rescued (but may be taken over normally once in one of the players' armies), and Nilfeim, Marcus and the Venoc Warlord may never be so controlled.

Winning the Game.

[Having tired of Capture the Flag victory conditions (see my last 3 scenarios ), I had considered an Area Control victory condition, but could not visualize how it would fit. Then the new Official Scenario came out!]

Winning the Game. A player wins if he/she has Control of both Pillars of Power at the end of the third, or any subsequent, round. To Control a Pillar of Power, you must have the only figure on it at the end of a round, and that figure must be unengaged.

Well met!

I actually searched to see if any night scenarios were extant, and found a site with this. But the last post implied that it had never been published.

I thought it was quite fun.

This Legionnaire sounds like he was just a cast member in The Last Legion, Centurion, or The Eagle.

Sounds great! Since you just had your Regular Group Game Mastering Turn for A Sweel Party two games ago, and have to wait a while for your next one, I'm sure we'll be holding many productive discussions about this. I note it includes your original Dragon Scenario dragon in it! OK, here's a start:

1. The Map: What is this "earth" of which you speak?

2. When you say the Revenant's Tome glyph is "directly below the Dragon's Pedestal," I assume you mean directly below the dragon on the pedestal? (See how annoying these editing comments are?)

3. Are the lit areas only single spaces?

1. As I understand it, that is from whence said Legionnaire was summoned.

2. No. If I had meant that, I would have said it (as with the Prisoners). However, since I don't want the pedestal that high, I'll reword the whole thing.

3. No. "Areas" consist of more than one hex (as the name implies).

Just looked at Night Raid on the Barrow. Cool story and mechanics (Wandering Sentries).

1. Please refer to your paragraph above on The Map. "earth" is used uncapiltalized in the list of terrain such as ruins. That's what I'm asking about, since there is no such thing.

No offence to you if I use no legacy no vahalla society with it?

Well met!

No problem with modifying the scenario any way you wish, Kaemon, from me.

The link works from my computer. It is a picture of the Map, and only the half containing the Compound.

See my playtest, slowly taking place in the Battle Reports forum.

Still more changes . . .

Well met!

Made victory condition Control of Pillars of Power, from the third round on. Made it necessary to destroy Chain binding Prisoner before it can be Rescued. Members of Neutral Force may no longer attack each other.
