Round 2 - January 2011 Lazy Laundry Tournament

Posted January 24th, 2011 at 01:17 PM by Elginb
Well, my powers of predestination continue to fail me as I guessed only 18 of 30 outcomes correctly.

I’m still on the kick of trying to use all terrain types in my maps, and the first map (for the first half of the draw) was a circular castle with high walls facing the start zones and “collapsed” walls in between the high walls. I used two castle arches (minus the doors) to make the high walls through which I ran a creek made of swamp and regular water. The north collapsed wall was surrounded by a lava field and the south collapsed wall was bordered by dungeon tiles. Outside the high walls were a couple jungle trees and a hill you could climb (with mounted battlements) that led to a ladder which would lead you to the top levels. There were patches of ice on top breaking up the wall-walk. Glyphs included the wind glyph, as well as the Move+4 treasure and another glyph and treasure I can’t quite remember (yikes!).

The second map (for the second half the draw) had two high walls abutting the start zones, but you had to go toward the center of the map to get on the road that would take you up there. To get to the road, you had to either go across a river or through a lava field. In the middle of the road was a tall palm tree and some jungle brush on the edges. You could scale to the high points without being on the road, but you had to fight some ice and snow to get up there. There were also a couple small hills on an axis perpendicular to the road. On this map, there was the wound and move+2 glyphs, as well as the Defense+3 glyph and Attack+2 glyphs… I think—I should probably take better notes about what maps I use (or maybe I just need to work a way to get pictures on here).

Some notes about the close match-ups:

ProtectorsX2, Major X17, Marcus, Warforged, Sacred Band, ChainfightersX2
Acolarh, Syvarris, Jorhdawn, Morsbane, ArmocsX2, WoA *

The Armocs were able to sweep into the middle of the castle and occupy the wind glyph right off the bat, and the Protectors were desperately trying to clear them off so they could take the high ground. The Armocs not only held the wind glyph, but were able to engage the Protectors long enough to allow Syvarris to sneak up to the high walls. Syvarris started picking everybody off, even while the Chainfighters tried desperately to pull him down. Truth be told, the Protectors took out the Armocs got their shots against Syvarris, but the dice just weren’t rolling their way before the archer took them out. That left Syvarris on the high ground with some WoA on the south collapsed road and Morsbane and Jorhdawn waiting in the start-zone, with Marcus and the Sacred Band approaching. Well, I hate to say it, but Syvarris got cocky and decided to advance Jorhdawn and Morsbane, thinking the WoA could hold off the Greco-Roman advance, but it was not to be! Marcus swept right by the elfin princesses and knocked out Syvarris with one punch while the sacred band rocked the wizards’ house.

Spider-man, Sir Dupuis, Siege, Templars, Repulsors
Major Q9, GorillinatorsX2, ZombiesX4 *

Q9 hung back on this one and decided to let the Zombies and Gorillinators try to take out the Repulsors, who took the high ground fairly quickly. Spider-man occupied the Gorillinators while the Repulsors took out some zombies, but soon enough, it was all Spider-man hopping around and mopping the floor with the uber-slow undead. Q9 finally got fed up and took out the Repulsors, then gained high ground and splattered Sir Dupuis against the pavement. By then, the good Major and Spider-man were both down to 1 life each, and it came down to a game of who would blink first. Turns out it was Q9, the blinking fool-bot…

Major Q10, Venom, Kee-Mo-Shi, Marro Warriors, DeathreaversX3 *
Warhulk, Iron Golem, Deathstalkers, BrutesX2, GoblinsX2

I wish I could remember this one better—the Q10/Venom team should’ve won this one handily, but the stupid deathstalkers managed two successfuls mauls in a row against Venom—and they weren’t even on the same turn; one Deathstalker did it in the last turn of the 3rd round, got the initiative flip, then mauled him again… no spidey-sense allowed, apparently. Even so, Q10 and the Reavers almost won it, but it finally came down to Q10 being chased all over the battlefield by the Iron Golem, who finally caught up and laid the smack down. Very disappointing—I had high hopes for Q10/Venom <<sigh>>

Red Skull, MotH, Hydra, Pulverizer, Kelda, Shiori
Nilfheim, Raelin 2.0, Alastair, MacDirksX2, Isamu *

This one was really swingy. Alastair and the Hill People charged ahead with support from Raelin and somehow managed to clean up at the start of this one—Alastair got just hurt enough to give his buddies a huge boost and they easily took out the Hydra and Pulverizer. The Red Skull got really panicky and told MotH to run away! Which he did, right up to the top of the high wall. Alastair then took out the Red Skull and Raelin took out Shiori. But MotH managed to one-shot Raelin, Alastair and Nilfheim in successive turns! You give this guy high ground and he’s pretty darn tough against them hero types. By then there were only a couple MacDirks left running around like chickens without their heads, and it was all over very quickly.

Jotun, ImperiumX2, Kiova
Moltenclaw, Moriko, DeathstalkersX2, StingersX2 *

Really close, but apparently really boring, ‘cause I can’t remember a thing about it…

Werewolf, WoBx2, WarforgedX3, Zetacron
Spartacus, Retiarius, Atlaga, CapuansX2, YariX2 *

This one escapes me, too…

Othkurik, Mika, 10th RegX3, GreenscalesX2 *
MotH, Hydra, Thorgrim, MonksX3

The games on the second map tended to play really fast, so maybe that’s why I can’t remember them…

Anyway, on to the next round!
