Second Chance?

Posted September 10th, 2010 at 05:04 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
I am once again employed.

My old job, the one where they replaced me with someone with more seniority, has hired me back. In the same job.

I have no idea why.

Itís not stable at all- they said Iíd probably get two months at least. After that, who knows?

Maybe I was foolish. Maybe I should have gone and looked elsewhere- but I didnít. I went back.

At least the desk was clean.

Itís really brutal right here now. Iím here but other employees are being cut left and right.
The manager is mean and heartless in one breath, and then chats happily about her vacation plans in the next. I do not think I am cut out for this kind of world.

I always tried to think of this as a pirate ship. (sounds a bit silly now). Iíve agreed to help sail this barque and in exchange I get some booty. (not that kind....). Iíve never been able to think about this job in other terms. Itís a piratey place.

This region is the hardest hit in Canada. It was an auto town. GM packed up and left in the summer. Ford is cutting production. Is Chrysler still around? Now we have these big empty factories- theyíre saying they could be used to hold conventions- all that big empty space. I wonder if anyone is planning UnemploymentCon?

My kids keep me up to date on the percentage of their classmates that move away. It was about 15% a year. On the block where I live there are twelve houses for sale, out of Thirty-two..

I feel like I live on a sinking ship. But for now, Iím staying. For another two months, anyway.... it's a little like death row.

Is it a second chance, or some kind of a fish trap?

I'd say it was a second chance, StW. Based on what you told us, it seems that your fellow employees vouched for you to get your job back, IMO.

Take the rejob with a grain of salt, and hope for the best. Don't get your hopes up that you may keep your job. A good idea may to snoop around for another job, at least a backup, in case you lose your job again.

You played it well; but they're still idiots. Keep looking for another job. If you find one, then ask them for a raise before you walk out. Get To It and At It!

I have a good gaming pal up in Canada. That's how I got hosted in both Halifax and Calgary in past years, in addition to my own visits to Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, and Louisbourg. If I'm lucky he may come visit here in NYC this Christmas...if he keeps the job he just got, after long unemployment up in The Great White North.

Glad to hear you got a two-month reprieve. Use the time well, whether it be keeping an eye out for a new job or a new hometown.

I am also glad to hear that you have a job again, albiet a temperary one. The next time your manager gets grumpy, remind her that the company wanted you back, not the other way around.

Keep looking for other opportunities and keep 'scaping.
