Brustwehrs

Posted April 30th, 2010 at 12:25 PM by Sylvano the Wasabus
No, itís not a kind of salmon sandwich.
And, itís not some form of German swimming brassiere.
A Brustwehr is our version of a mantlet for dwarves.
Ah, whatís a mantlet?
No, itís not the space for sublet in a manís head or abdomen. And itís not some kind of cannibal cutlet. Itís a portable parapet- Brustwehr is German for parapet. Probably.

Our large and much beloved dwarf army has some serious weaknesses. The most major being we only give the figures three movement.

In some past major engagements our dwarven host suffered heavy losses at the hands of some miserable centaurs whose range and movement made them practically untouchable. So in true dwarf spirit we set about solving this problem.

Some of our dwarves have ďblack cloak camouflageĒ. They are wearing black cloaks- theyíre customs and I painted them that way and the black coat gives them an extra die against ranged attacks. But it still isnít enough.

All my life I have been a student of medieval warfare. I actually held up a store once with a crossbow- well, okay, that isnít really true, but I have been into archery and sword and shield work for a good part of my life. As a younger person I played with toy soldiers- actually when have I not played with miniature figures? At some point I acquired some German made toy mantlets called Brustwehrs. I remembered them and thought this was just what our dwarves needed.

some nice sketches of medieval Brustwehrs... I didn't make them. Someone who can draw did them.

This is only the prototype, but it has worked well. Itís unpainted and the hinge is craftily made with a piece of gaff tape.

Any attacker to the front of the Brustwehr must shake an 18+ for their weapon to penetrate the Brustwehr.
The dwarves behind have several holes through which to fire arrows and bolts.

We reckoned that dwarves are strong, and a figure pushing the Brustwehrs forward has a movement penalty of -1. Our rationale was that many mantlets were mounted on wheels, and plus itís hard to have much of a movement penalty when your movement is only 3.

The Brustwehr is destructible, has only one life and a defense of 7. And theyíre bargain priced at only 20 points each!
An attacker of the Brustwehr can choose to attack the Brustwehr itself or roll the 20d for a chance at the figure(s) behind.

In one recent battle manned Brustwehrs were used as ad hoc doors for the entrance to a fortified height, and they performed very well.
Our Brustwehrs can also be carried by horses and unloaded in one turn.
In another recent battle Brustwehrs were captured and used successfully against the dwarves by thieving goblins and in another case stinky elves.

In the picture you can see a battle from our big game. Itís a small permanent map set up where we roll dice for random terrain additions- in this case volcano, which erupts, does nothing or double erupts by 20d. The points were skewed- the attacker had 400 points and the defender 190.

The attacker figured it was going to be easy. Our little defending dwarves just huddled in the corner behind the Brustwehr and waited for the battle to come to them.

They couldnít touch those big Rawrin Wolfens, with their move of 7. Their leader is out of sight in the picture, giving the Rawrin squad additional turns. When the engagement finally happened the weak defensed dwarf archers fell- you can see three of the squad down, while one remains behind the Brustwehr. The two little melee dwarves engaged the Rawrins Ė they didnít cause much damage but they managed to hold them in place and when the volcano erupted and the lava advanced, it was roasted Rawrin time!

Cool idea. I remember when I payed Age of Empires III, the Native Americans had mantlets that they used as siege weaponry, and chucked arrows and tomahawks over the top of the thing. It was awesome!

For Mantlets figures shouldn't get a penelty if there are multiple. Great post.

Also, what is the massive thing in the background that looks like a giant white rock?

I have a huge collection of 54mm plastic figures (10,000 figures plus terrain, vehicles, etc.). I have a couple of the curved mantlets you show in this larger scale, which were made by Elastolin in hard plastic. They are in a medium brown with silver metal trim.

Yes, it's a big gray rock. We're just getting into carving foam bricks into landscape pieces, and that's the first one.

chas you have 10,000 54mm plastic figures?! You must have some incredible battles. I guess I have about ...oh my... I never really thought about it- 2000? They don't see much light any more though. But I'm not getting rid of them.

You should have them be flammable, and have archers able to light arrows in lava or something

Yikes! I'm not telling my kids about that one. We do have lava shooters- I'm not telling them.
