Saving Scape!

Posted February 4th, 2010 at 09:32 AM by Sylvano the Wasabus
Go back to the land!

I have a nasty fever with a rotten cold. Itís been through all the kids so I guess itís my turn.
As I lay awake last night, amidst feverish nightmares, a brilliant plan congealed in my congested noggin -a plan to save Scape.

Certainly there has been much written about DnD Scape and whatís happening with that. I believe in recycling as much as the next hobo, but I hunger for the sweet taste of Classic Scape. Is DnD just slightly retooled to appeal to a broader demographic or is it a last cash grab in a fading product line? I decided to believe the former, for we all need something to believe in, now that Obamaís first hundred days have past. I think WOTC are trying to get even more people interested in Scape- and thatís when the idea came to me- farmers!

Thereís something like 6 million farmers in the USA, and I bet they donít have time to learn a new game because theyíre too busy driving tractors, breeding pigs and shucking corn. But I bet farmers are bored. They do the same jobs, over and over. So WOTC needs to make a special game- like Marvel Scape or DnD Scape- for the farmers.

Scape is oft called a gateway drug on this site, and I agree. If we could just get the farmers interested, soon theyíd be playing classic Scape and DnD Scape and perhaps even dressing in super hero costumes in their tractors!

Instead of Summoning Generals it could be food groups- like fruits vs. veggies vs. cheeses vs. bloated animals. Imagine a squad of strawberries with a vitamin C spit special attacking a large Holstein hero cow with devour! Carrots could fire projectiles- maybe even with a range of 9- Syvarris must have eaten his carrots, donít you think? Root veggies like potatoes could have a hide in the ground special and then could burst forth and roll all over enemies. A potato with a lot of eyes could be akin to Beholders!

I think vegetable Scape has a much broader appeal than DnD Scape- every one eats them or hates them. Parents could become involved, substituting real veggies and battling on their hexed kitchen tables, losing on purpose Ėďyou killed the broccoli squad, now you have to eat them!Ē Children would be healthier!

I can imagine farmers ploughing their fields into hex squares, and then having giant gatherings where they drink homebrew and dress as their favourite vegetable and LARP the game.

Heroscape would be saved and WOTC could afford to keep the O in their acronym. Dozens of farms fresh boosters could be issued! They could make edible boosters! And of course all of the creative customizers could makes all sorts of amazing things- I donít know, maybe itís the flu but right now Iím thinking of an avocado that can fly with a rice sneeze special attack.

I know the blogs are not widely read, but I hope that the Head Wizard out on the Coast gets word of this! I know I have a fever and my idea isnít fully formed but I think itís right in line with the kind of fertilizer theyíve been using recently!

Farmscape might get those snooty Euro-only players hooked too.

I hope you feel better, and get these crazy ideas out of YOUR HEAD! On a side note, farmers are never bored. There's always something to do "down on the farm."

Whenever I think of farmers, I think of the movie The Son In-Law.
