Happy New Year

So it begins.

The playtesters and some people who live near certain FLGS' have already received their Master Set 3: Battle for the Underdark. Sandra over at HMG reported earlier that she'll get hers in today, ready to ship out soon. I'm sure that WGHQ and the other online retailers will follow suit shortly, and we'll start seeing them in Wal-Mart before too long.

There has been a lot of discussion over the last few months, ranging from people being ecstatic to enraged over the proceedings. But once the previews started coming in, and hints were dropped, it seems (to me at least) that the community response has been more and more optimistic.

Having the set in hand has helped me too. Setting up cave systems with shadows and stalagmites has been pretty cool. I don't think that adding fun new scenarios should in any way detract from the game we all know and love. It'll just give us a new way to enjoy it, and for some, it might be just what they needed to get back in, or try it out for the first time.

These last few months have been awfully different and difficult for me. For the longest time, I had to just be quiet. Judging from my posting habits, you can probably imagine that! But even after my leaky battle report, I saw a lot of comments about what the big scary WotC was doing. Sure, there are some things that the guys over on this site did not pick exactly, but they're working their butts off to make a fun game that continues to strengthen the Heroscape system. These designers and playtesters are almost all fans of the game and members of HSers.com. It seems to me that the only way it could be any more of a product of our community is if the new unit discussions were held on these forums.

And as fun as that sounds, let me tell you that some of the mystique and anticipation would certainly be lost.

I've seen so many comments about what WotC is trying to do with the game, or change it into something else, or how they put 1x commons and uncommons in the master set as an overt cash grab. Despite the lack of any signs in the master set, there still seems to be a fear now and then about WotC deliberately stoking the flames of power creep based on what they've done with other titles. This is pretty crazy to me.

The goal of the guys making the figures is, and always will be to make the figure's stats fit with what it should do. The points are designed to reflect how draftable a figure is. If Wave 9 and 10 didn't get you scared about power creep, this shouldn't either. But if it does, don't blame WotC's demands or something. Blame me, because I'm a big jerk.

Except one thing. There's one thing coming out that looks like it would totally be my idea, but it wasn't. Honest.

Personally, I'm super stoked to see people's reactions to the upcoming waves, and even more excited to get the finalized figures and cards in my hand and play them.

Tournaments, scenarios at home, whatever... it's going to be a really good year for Heroscape. I think that's something worth celebrating.

Wise words, and helpful. Its too bad we don't hear directly from WOTC once in a while. But I know that in the 54mm figure production field and other hobby related areas, mums the word, and secrecy is tighter than it was in the Cold War! So we can be glad that the playtesters are active and with us.

Nicely put and I am excited for the new year like a ton of you.

I'm anxious for the newest sets, waves, and anything heroscape related, really, old or new because I have been 'out' of heroscape for far too long. Sure I go on the site a tiny bit for big news, but that's about the only thing I do with heroscape. Starting this new month with the new year, I'm getting back into it like I was about a year ago and truely do the things I want to do and be the person (scaper) I want to be. I can't wait for a new year of Heroscape and a new, fresh year for me.
