Note of Inspiration - Hi everybody! So I read Fresh’s Strategy Discussion all the time and I love checking out what everyone thinks of the units and how they run them. Unfortunately I’m not much of a strategist and usually only play for fun when not testing. However, I have read a good amount of comic books, not currently as much as I used to, but I’ve been getting back into it this past year or so. That said I’ve been curious what runs have inspired the LDs when running these designs and what every C3G member’s favorite comics are.
Seeing how this is a mostly comics-based project, I thought this might be a neat idea and would be great for any new readers. I’ve found out about a lot of these characters through their designs and then started reading their stories. Some characters, I’m sure a lot of us are still pretty unfamiliar with and it’d be cool to get insight from everyone who helped design them. That said I’d figured I’d start with the big ones. :)

I think it would also be fun to discuss theme, some characters have a lot of designs and I’m curious to know people’s favorites. I know competitiveness will probably factor in, but try to base the choices here more off of how true to the character the designs are, how awesome they are to play, or just on your personal favorites.

C3G’s Comics Recommendations
Best Introduction
(Try to recommend things you might find in a bookstore or comic shop.)
- This’ll be tough, but you only get one vote, pick the story you would recommend to anyone just getting into the character or comics in general.
Iconic/Must Reads
- This time you get up to three votes. Of course some of us might want to list much more, so don’t hold back. After voting, feel free to list why you love the stories and make note of additional fun reads.

Thematic Favorites
Best Design of the Bunch
This will usually be a choice between multiple versions of a character, different members of a smaller team, or however fitting a way there is to break things down.
- Pick the one you like the most and tell us why! Think about what powers best capture a comic book feel, what take encapsules the core of a character, which iteration do you like best, what’s your personal favorite design?
Future Design Ideas
Is there a version of this character or a member of the team you still think we should see? Let us know and share where to read about them!
- Name a to-be-designed version or character that you’d be excited to see.

When all is said and done I’ll tally up the votes for each in a week's time and leave the best Intro and top votegetters for Iconic/Must Reads in the character/team's first post.

Quick Notes:
- Most big heroes will be grouped by SI and Universe/Earth (in parenthesis), since there are many versions of certain heroes (multiverse/Elseworlds will be covered in their own deal, like AoA or Spider-Verse). Try to recommend stuff focusing on whatever version is being discussed.
- Teams/groups/factions are often composed of lesser known characters so feel free to vote for any interpretation.

Best Design of the Bunch:
- Utility Belt is the coolest. Just a neat idea, thematically spot-on, and has opened up a ton of design space using those Utility Glyphs. But honestly, I use all the Bruce Batmen pretty often.

Future Design Ideas
- I'd love to see a Flashpoint (Thomas Wayne) Batman at some point.

C3G’s Comics Recommendations

Best Introduction:
Year One, kind of a shoe-in.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- The Long Halloween
- The Killing Joke
- The War of Jokes and Riddles
This might be all I've read (part of why I started this thread lol), I need to tackle more. They were all great though in different ways.
edit: honorable mention to Batman/Aliens, my first Batman comic.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Utility Belt
I started with the OG low cost Batman for awhile, but the Utility glyph system has since completely and entirely won me over. 250 is a perfect price point as well, you can roll out with Batgirl and Robin or the Batmobile for 500. My go-to Batman.

Played JLII recently, that's a fun one, I like how he's cheap and Assess Weakness feels perfect and pairs well with Nerve Punch.

Future Design Ideas:
Old Man Bruce support figure from Batman Beyond would be pretty cool.
Yellow Lantern Batman

Soundwarp SG-1
December 8th, 2021, 01:09 AM
The first Court of Owls story was pretty good, especially for a new52 thing. That might be the only non-elseworld Batman story I've read that was made in the last like 30 years though (discounting random single issues hunting for weird Soundwarp characters).

IAmBatman
December 8th, 2021, 01:59 AM
Oooh, man, make me pick between my children!! (Wait, am I Martha then?)

Best Introduction:
I'm going to do a swerve here, partially because it was my own introduction, and partially just because I think there's something to be said about being launched right into a story arc that shows Batman in action, at his finest, running a gauntlet of most of his most iconic villains. So I'm going to switch it up, and for best introduction, go Knightfall

Iconic/Must Reads:
Now I'm not crazy, though. Once you've read Knightfall, absolutely circle back and read Year One. It's just the best origin there is for Batman. A lot of other really good ones have been named, so I'm going to shout out to some that are not quite as iconic, but that I feel deserve appreciation. Contagion and the follow-up Legacy have Batman dealing with a deadly virus pandemic and villainous machinations (pretty relatable in this day and age). No Man's Land is a bit of a mess at times, but if you can find it distilled in a collection, the core of the story is really good, and I love how it creates a universe where a Batman really makes sense.

Thematic Favorites
This one is really tough for me, especially since I was at least involved with all of these and LDed a few of them. My true favorite right now is probably an unreleased Batman that some of you say in playtesting not too long agao. :-)
I have to note that Batman ('66), a wonderful design, is missing from your list.
For released stuff, though, I really like how Batman (Outsiders) brings discipline and strategy to the unruly Outsiders, but if he falls early, they rally without him and in some ways get even more powerful.
As for future Batman designs I want to see? I like both the ones mentioned (Old Man Bruce and Thomas Wayne. My biggest bucket-lister would be a Bat-Man Mystery Man, though, possibly with guns.

Hard to go wrong with Batman and dinosaurs.

I'm feeling bad now that I didn't mention my favorite Batman creators. Writers are probably Paul Dini, Devin Grayson, and Doug Moench. Artists are probably Norm Breyfogle, Neal Adams, and Kelley Jones.

Love this thread idea Splash! I'll preface my post by saying I don't read a lot of comics, most of my comic book character knowledge is through other media.

Best Introduction:
I'd probably say The Long Halloween. It's got plenty of Batman being a detective, which is my favorite aspect of him. Great art too.

Iconic/Must Reads:
I usually read short runs - The Cult is a great one. I think it gets pretty overlooked. The Dark Knight Returns and Batman R.I.P. are probably two more for me. Less iconic, more "people don't really talk about these runs and they're good".

Thematic Favorites
Ah geez. They're all solid. Gonna go Utility Belt. Lots of options with him.

Future ideas - A Green, Yellow, and Black Lantern Batman would be cool. And I think they all have clix.

Thanks everybody, I'm loving the input here, and everyone has something different to recommend!

I have to note that Batman ('66), a wonderful design, is missing from your list.
I was just doing mainstream comics Batmans, he's based on the Adam West show isn't he? Although I guess there's no crossover symbol. I'm thinking of doing an Elseworlds/other Batmen (and a Spider-Verse) one down the line so I was saving him for then.

I'll be posting one every Friday evening. If anybody has anything they'd wanna add/tweak as far as ideas go in this thread let us know before then and we can hash it out in the few extra days before I thwip up the next candidate the Friday after this one.

The '66 Batmanverse isn't a part of the mainstream DC Comics universe. They definitely have comics, though. But, fair enough. People have mentioned Old Man Bruce in here, and he's also not part of the mainstream DC Comics universe, but the animated one, at least if it's the version I believe they're discussing.

December 9th, 2021, 01:57 AM
Yeah that's true. I intended it to be just mainstream Batman, but I figured some lee-way in the future designs couldn't hurt. Now that I rethink it though, I'd switch my answer on that to Yellow Lantern Batman, I'd love to write up a draft for that one.

Comics weren’t something I got a chance to read much of growing up due to cost and availability where I lived. But once I was out of the house is when my reading kicked off. I started with along Halloween and Year One as stories but the series I read was Legends of the Dark Knight as it fit the early years batman and meshed really well with Year One timeline. At least early on. Plus the five issue story arcs where great for me. Sort of the start of the “wrote to trades” aspect I guess.

I think Long Halloween is a great intro though. Two face is my favorite villain and this is a great retelling of his origin.

A lot of great stuff listed already so I’m going to go outside of those. I think the first five or so trades from the LotDK series are really good companion pieces for the Year One bat. Venom is one that really stuck out to me for some reason…but I like all the ones where he overcomes tough things using his mind. This is just a different way using his mind as it’s not really a detective story as a mental toughness and self control side. Different in that it doesn’t have one of his iconic villains really. Venom…but Bane isn’t here yet.

Legends of the Dark Knight is a great pick. Year Two is also a pretty fun companion to Year One.

I very nearly picked "Shaman," the first story arc of Legends of the Dark Knight. It's a nice companion read with "Year One." Also, I share its general sentiments about the cold.

Shaman is on my shelf. I thought I’d get some flack for LotDK. I wondered if it was actually good or if I was just sentimental about it since it was all my first real comic collection. Shaman is one of the few physical TPB I own.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/416R9E74BXL.jpg
I thought it was great. It's probably more of a by the numbers book looking back, but there is a scene at the end I absolutely love where after Batman returns from his terrifying experience with the Aliens, he holds a facehugger in a jar in the Batcave and thinks something along the lines on "some secrets are best kept forgotten" and tosses it into the abyss.

I have no idea if this would be canon though...

If you walk into a comics shop and are looking for a good superhero comic, chances are you should pick Daredevil. Every Daredevil book I've read has been quite good at the very least and some of it has been the best stuff I've read (I'm sure there is a bad run somewhere, but I haven't gotten to it). Daredevil has tons of fantastic runs and he remains one of my favorite characters.

Best Introduction:
Daredevil by Mark Waid {vols. 3 & 4}/(Daredevil by Mark Waid Vol 1)
This run I think is a great introduction for newbies and I think I've read about halfway through each (3 & 4) and found them non-stop entertaining. We also see a more fun-loving, swashbuckling type DD like in the originals, but still weighed down by his serious inner demons. It's a perfect mix between the old Stan Lee type stuff and the gritty bottom of a sewer Miller type stuff.
On top of that the art is amazing! The illustrations and panels do a great job of communicating his radar sense and is sleek enough to be friendly to new readers. Honestly, the art alone is enough reason to give it a read.
Grab the first trade and give it a go.

- First I should probably mention, Man Without Fear, the Frank Miller Daredevil origin story, I still haven't read it yet, so I can't say whether it should be the intro book, although it is highly recommended by many.
- Vol 1 "the early stuff"/(Daredevil Epic Collection: The Man Without Fear)
Of the classic Marvel debuts, I found Spider-Man, DD, and X-Men to be the most enjoyable. You really see him jumping around on rooftops, cheesing it up, and I love it. You also get his origin and an intro to the supporting cast of Foggy, Karen, and the law office. Really what might drag it down are the mostly forgettable villains, while I may have a soft spot for Stilt-Man orthe Owl, them and the others hold it back from being the best book for someone just getting into DD.
- Daredevil by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson/(Trade Vol 1 or Omnibus)
This is the real source of when DD got dark. After this a lot of DD stories are about making Matt suffer as a tragic hero and sometimes antihero, some of which are pretty good. What you really see here are the introduction of a lot of cornerstone parts of Daredevil's story; Elektra, the Hand, his rivalry with Bullseye, and Matt personally putting himself in charge of keeping Kingpin in check.
- Daredevil: End of Days
A fantastic detective story, with Ben Urich tracking down the mystery behind Matt Murdock's death some 20 years in the future. I really enjoyed this one.
- Another one that should be checked out is Ann Nocenti's run, with the Typhoid Mary arc collected in Daredevil Epic Collection: A Touch of Typhoid. I've really been meaning to read this one as well.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
II is probably the smarter pick in most games (Go The Distance is so fun), but the first DD really captures him at his most iconic, Man Without Fear (a power titled just for him) lets him hit everybody in the room and his Radar Sense, similar to Spidey's spider sense, lets him dodge bullets and leap up to the rafters just like he does in the comics. Criminal Intimidation doesn't come into play a lot, but if anyone should have it, it's Daredevil.
And a shoutout to Matt Murdock for bringing in the lawyering side.

edit: ugh, I changed my mind, II is the best one

Future Design Ideas:
Original Yellow suit, for sure. I know I saw a design somewhere in the public...

There's Shadowland Daredevil though that's a pretty divergent take. 90s Armor Daredevil, I guess, if anyone cares about that? He also gets a short-lived alternate look in the Waid run that'd be fun to have on a card.

The yellow look is definitely the big one. Will try to get on that soonish.

Best Introduction:
I haven't actually read any, however I'm curious if anyone else has. The appeal is obvious, who wouldn't wanna see a mashup of their favorite characters/inter-company rivals?

Iconic/Must Reads:
I myself haven't read any, but back in the days of just reading character bios I did absorb a bit of the cool combos that they came up with, well some I agreed with and some I didn't, but it was a cool concept.
What I found more interesting, like many young fans, was who would win in a fight (although that hasn't changed much XD). One of the earlier books I read was, again in a library, was called Crossover Classics: The Marvel/DC Collection (I had to look it up of course). Before Amalgam really, but it collected the earliest crossovers between Marvel and DC. There was a Superman/Spider-Man one, a Hulk/Batman one, and an X-Men/Teen Titans one.
I'm pretty sure my favorite was the Supes/Spidey one because Spider-Man was very Spider-Man in that one. The Hulk/Batman one I remember was weird cause they chose Shaper of Worlds as the Hulk villain. I honestly don't recall anything from the last one except that they were in space.

Best Intro
The whole thing is really set up by the DC vs. Marvel miniseries event. It's a bit gimmicky, but it's a fun read and gives context for the whole Amalgam thing, so I have to recommend it.

Must Reads
Honestly the only one I've actually read is the last issue of the DC vs. Marvel miniseries, where they started getting into the Amalgam stuff. But my favorite character from it is Bruce Wayne, Agent of SHIELD, just because I think it's funny.

Best Design of the Bunch: I'll go Spider-Boy. I like Super Soldier, but he's almost too good and casts a bit of a shadow over the soldier faction sometimes. Really neat design, though.

Future Design Ideas: Gotta get a Dark Klaw.

Ultimate Spider-Man is the most accessible entry point for the character - philosophically different from the original, but still good in its own right. You have to do something a little different to make a new version worth it anyway. It's a super light read and something I usually recommend as a first superhero book to check out. The Ultimate version of Venom is crap though.

Ditko's Amazing Spider-Man run is still king as far as I'm concerned. It's definitely of its time, so I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point unless you have a tolerance for the story-telling tropes of the 60s. That said, it hits the ground running and delivers some of Spidey's most iconic moments. Spidey's had some character drift over the years, but his shtick remains pretty consistent because Lee and Ditko knocked it out of the park.

Deadly Foes of Spider-Man is a fun 90s heist miniseries starring some of Spidey's rogues. It had a substantial impact on the Thunderbolts and also inspired two follow-up books: The Lethal Foes of Spider-Man and The Superior Foes of Spider-Man. Lethal Foes came just a couple years later and is not quite as clever as the original, but throws more villains into the mix for a zanier story. Superior Foes is a more modern (2013) spin on the idea. It leans a bit more comedic than the original, but still pays homage to its roots.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man is worth checking out if you're into the high-school setting for Spidey - it's set 'in between' the issues of the Ditko run and fleshes out Pete's high school world a bit.

Honorable mentions: Stern's run on SSM and ASM, Spider-Man 2099 (the original volume published in the 90s), Zdarsky's run on SSM, Spider-Man & the Secret Wars Issue #3, Spider-Man and the X-Men, the first half of the Clone Saga

C3G’s Comics Recommendations

Best Introduction:
The Amazing Spider-Man (Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: Great Power)
I put this one up top simply because if you’re going to read classic Marvel, Spider-Man is simply the best series to read. It’s corny and dated, but you get his origin, the whole idea of his character, and best of all page after page of classic villains making their debut. Like at least half of his rogues gallery is just right here in the beginning; Sinister Six, Green Goblin, Lizard, Scorpion. If you keep reading you’ll hit arcs like If This Be My Destiny and Spider-Man No More and more villain intros like Rhino and Kingpin.

Iconic/Must Reads:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81gGOp8gftL.jpg
- Marvels
Marvels is one of my favorite comics in general and I consider it the best introduction to the early days of Marvel. It’s from the perspective of an average citizen who works for the Daily Bugle and gets across how the public reacted to various heroes showing up across New York. The art is some of the best you’ll ever see and, of course, encounters with Spider-Man are one of the central events.
- Hunted (The Amazing Spider-Man: Hunted)
Hunted is a pretty fun read and sort of sequel to Kraven’s Last Hunt, which is definitely on my list of things to get to, more iconic, and probably even better.
- Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut!/The Amazing Spider-Man #229–230 (Vol. 1)
This is a great little arc that, aside from showing just how unstoppable the Juggernaut is, demonstrates Spider-Man giving his absolute all to protect people and how he never stops trying even against overwhelming odds.
- Spider-Man is also a great stand-out side-character in whatever he’s in whether it be the countless team ups, whatever Secret War/s is happening, and all the other crossover events.
- I'll also recommend Marvel Zombies (Marvel Zombies Vol. 1: The Complete Collection). This is probably my favorite non-616 Peter Parker story, because it takes the central drive of his character, his guilt, and drives it beyond its limits. After contracting “the Hunger”, he succumbs and eats his family (in Dead Days) and his soul is just shattered afterwards.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
I’m also gonna have to go classic C3G Spider-Man. The design just gets everything down for him and is my go to Spidey. Symbiote Spidey is a close second, and all the others are not too far behind and also look like tons of fun to play. It's also kinda cool how the Hasbro Spidey is basically a stand-in for early years/inexperienced Peter Parker.

Future Design Ideas:
Iron Spider - We have so many Spiders, but not this Civil War Spidey, I’m honestly a bit surprised.
Also we need Glyph of Pizza for Pizza Time!, could add to his Move number for speedy delivery. I’m sure the TMNT wouldn’t mind one either.

Really not sure what to put here, everyone knows who Spider-Man is. I do own the first Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus which includes Amazing Fantasy 15, just start at the beginning :)

Iconic/Must Reads
Spider-Verse (2014) by Dan Slott, Olivier Coipel and Giuseppe Camuncoli, truly an iconic part of the character is the multiverse and variations (and clones, but don't read the Clone Saga...) these days.
No One Dies, Spider-Man's willingness to protect anyone no matter the cost is taken to the extreme here and it's a great story arc.
Spider-Man: Life Story 6 issues and an annual written by Chip Zdarsky and drawn Mark Bagley that take you through Spider-Man's life one decade at a time. The annual focuses on JJJ but is still a fantastic inclusion to the story.

I haven't read a ton of Spidey, but I really liked what I have read. My dad has comics of The Amazing Spider-Man (290ish-340ish) and I loved that whole run. That run introduces Venom, which was obviously a big deal. Ultimate Spider-Man is also a solid take on the character, though I didn't read much of that (I never made it to the Miles introduction).

Classic C3G Spider-Man is my favorite design, but I love the variety we have now too. Avengers Spidey is probably my second most used Spider-Man design.

Best Introduction and Iconic Read are both just The Watchmen by Alan Moore. Never read any more comics with them and I’m happy with that.

Best character we’ve done has to go to Ozymandias for his impact on the metagame. I most want to see Hooded Justice.

For the Watchmen, definitely need to read Watchmen. :p It's a classic for a reason. The movie is also really good, and the movie's changes actually improve the source material in my opinion.

I enjoyed The Button and its follow up Doomsday Clock as well, which encompasses an event where the Watchmen universe collides with the DC universe. It doesn't reach Watchmen's highs (how could it?), but it's pretty fun for a crossover story IMO.

My favorite design is Nite Owl as he is very useful to the Vigilante faction. Ozymandias is great, but he's a bit too powerful for my liking and not fun to play against. For future designs, I want to see Bubastis, Ozy's cat.

C3G’s Comics Recommendations

Best Introduction:
- Watchmen
Obviously, the essential read here and for many all that's worth reading. Touted by countless comic fans as one of the best comics there is. It's pretty good.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Doomsday Clock
The Watchmen universe collides with mainstream DC. I loved this one, and as someone who hasn't always read a ton of DC comics, I found it a great way to bust into DC, for me anyway.
- Before Watchmen: Minutemen
Out of all the Before Watchmen prequel comics that were put out this is probably the only one worth reading and one of the only ones that really adds anything substantial as well. I liked it a lot.
~ Watchmen (TV Series)
Although not a comic, the HBO show functions as a direct continuation of the original comic (albeit 30 or so years later), and like the comic it gets weird and has some pointed takes on our current societal state. Some of the plotlines are better than others; the episode focusing on Hooded Justice is the best.
~ The 2009 Watchmen movie has also been mentioned and it is amazing, especially considering my opinions on the director's track record.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
- Doctor Manhattan
He comes with a doomsday clock round counter and everything! The design really captures the spirit of an uncaring omnipotent god masquerading as a mortal, who really only gets nerfed by his own apathy.

Future Design Ideas
Hooded Justice, particularly a design where he could be read as the version from the show. There's a bunch I'd like to see, like the rest of the Minutemen (I was thinking of designing Mothman), Bubastis, and maybe Moloch.

edit: I streamlined them a bit, should be easier to digest.

Up next is Clark Kent, perhaps better known by his alter ego, Superman.

And remember, if you're a bit busy at the end of the year, votes will not be counted until a week has passed (the day after New Year's).

All-Star Superman is the definitive Superman experience, IMO. I actually prefer the animated movie to the comic since it cuts out some fluff. But both are great.

Other favorites are Red Son and Kingdom Come as both put Superman in some really tough situations while remaining true to the character. I’m a big fan of Elseworlds takes on Superman, and I generally think he’s better in team-up stories than individually. In mainline DC, The Death of Superman saga is a classic. I feel like the death itself was kinda lame, but the events afterward introducing four new “Supermen” to take up the mantle was fantastic. Shoutout to Super Sons as well, but that’s less of a Clark story.

I like all the Superman cards, but I think Superman II (450) is my definitive take on the character. Gets all his expected powers down while being a peak Unique Hero power level.

The Death of Superman saga is really kind of four stories, but the way it's set up I actually kind of love it as an introduction to the character, because nothing shows his importance as well as his loss.

Within those four stories, I'll point out an underrated one: Funeral for a Friend that is worth the read. Though I also like Reign of the Supermen, which introduces a lot of important support characters, like Steel and Kon-El and the original Eradicator. The end of it (which is really the Return of Superman at that point) also greatly impacts the Green Lantern mythos.

Though the second JL version of Superman is a big challenger, I'll agree that Superman (II) still has the crown for me. The two I LD'ed are easily the worst of the bunch. :-P

As for ones we haven't seen yet, I'd really love a Superman Blue with electric powers.

All-Star Superman is easily my vote best intro. I was pretty neutral on Supes before reading it, but it turned me into a fan.

Besides that, I really like Superman Smashes the Klan and Red Son. SSK is for teens/young adults, but it's a fun read that explores prejudice and (unsurprisingly) racism. And seeing klansmen get beat up is a fun time.

Favorite card is Superman *JL I*. I know it's not our strongest Superman, but within the context of the JL faction, I think he hits the 'big guy who takes punches' role well.

Love all the stories named, especially All-Star Superman. But just to pick one that hasn’t been named yet, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow has always been a big one to me. And the early Superboy/Legion stories collected in Legion of Super-Heroes: The Silver Age are a ton of fun!

I love all the Supermen we have, but Superman (JL II) has captured my imagination a lot recently. He works in JL builds, but he’s also the Supes you want to use as a generalist piece to have room for other units. That’s a neat niche for a Superman to fill.

Got to agree with Bats that Superman Blue feels like the most “missing” Clark.

C3G’s Comics Recommendations

Best Introduction:
I actually read All-Star Superman on a recommendation and just didn’t really like it all that much looking back, so for best intro I’ll go..
The Man of Steel by John Byrne. The post-Crisis reintroduction of his early years is a great intro to the character and might pair well with Batman Year One.

Iconic/Must Reads:
I still haven’t read a ton, so my picks will be a little off-brand. I did read Kingdom Come and liked it, but don’t really remember much of Superman in it.
~ Red Son
Elseworld Soviet-era Superman. A fun and interesting read.
~ Injustice (video game)
The Injustice games were a big eye opener when it came to DC for me. The take of alt-universe dictator Superman isn't uncommon, but he’s real ruthless here. I’m sure the comics are great too, but there are a ton now, so it’s kind of intimidating, plus I gotta read more main DC Supes.
~ Superman: The Animated Series/DCAU (TV series)
Probably the one I most associate with Superman now, him being ultra powerful is part of why I wasn’t a superfan as a kid and the series does a good job of keeping him vulnerable as well as communicating his values. I know a good writer can make it about more than that, but again I need to read more.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Superman (II) 450
The reason his character isn’t always as motivating from an outside perspective is also exactly why he’s super fun in-game. It’s invigorating playing as a Kryptonian tank against an opponent. Supes II is the buffest there is on stats and he has a great assortment of his iconic powers, with Heat Vision being my favorite. Themewise, he’s also a character that makes you realize why C3G cards multiple versions of characters, since he has so many friggin powers.

Runaways Vol. 1: Pride & Joy is definitely the best way to get into the series and characters. I heavily disliked the show (pretty inaccurate to the comics) and only watched the first season; however, if you haven't read the comics you can give this a try.

Must Reads
Read all of Brian K. Vaughan's run. The first couple of digests were the first comics I got into and they still hold up. It's really good. I haven't read past his stuff but I've heard the latest run is decent.
-Civil War: Young Avengers/Runaways
A nice tie-in to the Civil War event. Doesn't really relate much to the main story but has some nice interactions between the two teams.

Thematic Favorites
I've only played with Gert, Old Lace, Chase, and Karolina, but I like the all the synergy they have. Some nice protection with Karolina, boosts with Chase, initiative stuff with Gert, and attack with Old Lace. Nico looks to have good bonding. If I have to pick a favorite I say Karolina.

Future Designs
Alex Wilder would be great down the line. Add some more bonding and maybe some order marker removal/moving. Victor Mancha and Xavin would be cool, too. I have designs for all three but they definitely need tweaking.

Yeah definitely start at the start, great intro to the characters. It was awhile ago, but I enjoyed all of Vol 1.

Iconic/Must Reads:
Avengers Arena: The Complete Collection
I also remember that I really liked this one, although it only really had Nico and Chase in it for most of the thing. It was essentially Arcade making a bunch of young heroes do a Battle Royale (probably trying to get some reads off hype from the hunger games), but I’m always down for Most Dangerous Game style or “throw a bunch of characters in a situation and see what happens” stories.
Haven’t read much else, but I definitely wanna start Vol 2 at some point and meet the others.

The show was alrightish, definitely not as good as the comics. The upside is they develop Alex and the Pride more, but they change all the characters at least somewhat. Main things I didn’t like is they tamed down Gert and there is also a moment where they throw Karolina under the bus to develop Chase’s character that really isn’t good.

Best Introduction:
Hulk was definitely one of my favorites as a kid (I pity anyone who has never owned a pair of 2003 Hulk gloves, regardless of age), so I know a lot of his story, but I don’t think I’ve actually read enough Hulk to give a definitive answer here.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- The beginning (Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: Man or Monster?)
I’m usually a fan of starting at the start and getting the origin of the character, and I think the Hulk’s early stuff is worth it. Hulk’s initial series has the initial accident and saving Rick Jones, Betty and General Ross, wandering around the desert, and some cold war hijinks. Not a whole lot going on, his major villains aren’t here yet, but this thing gets all the early Hulk appearances including his time in the Avengers, and fights with Thing and Spider-Man.
- Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: Ghost of the Past
Peter David’s work on the Hulk is renowned by a lot of fans and he wrote the series for more than a decade, developing a lot of Banner’s psychological issues and Hulk’s personalities. One issue happened to be my first Hulk comic. Incredible Hulk #402-404 he has his first ever fight with the Juggernaut in the Amazon Jungle. Then Red Skull, with the help of Mentallo, brainwashes him (using his past relationship with his abusive father) for some sort of evil plan of world domination and he fights the Avengers before breaking out of it and fighting Juggernaut again. The stuff in the beginning of this trade is apparently sort of a final showdown between Hulk and Leader, which I’m sure is also totally worth reading.
- The Totally Awesome Hulk (Totally Awesome Hulk Vol. 1: Cho Time)
This series kicks off with world-class genius and friend of Hulk, Amadeus Cho, absorbing the powers of the Hulk and trying to prove Hulk can be a force for good. Banner, although a more minor character, partly (when he's not deceased) serves as a friend and mentor to Cho, but warns the decision to take on the Hulk was unwise and considers it a curse.

Gotham Central is fantastic and my #1 GCPD story.

For iconic/must reads, I'd vote for Year One again. Little else uses Jim as a character so effectively. The Gotham TV show also does an excellent job.

Cool idea! Batman: Year One I would say is the best intro, as it really establishes the Cops/Batman relationship well. Gotham Central was a fun book, though I didn't read all of it. I'll throw in Batman: The Animated Series as a great source of content on Bullock and Montoya in particular. Montoya was actually first created for the show (much like Harley Quinn) so it's a nice opportunity to see the genesis of the character and her relationship with Bullock.

I think Beat Cops are the most used, known, and played, but I think my favorite is Harvey Bullock for what he does to start to tie the faction together a bit more.

I'll echo that I'd love to see a Police Cruiser of some sort to beef cops up a bit more somehow.

No real comic reading experience with Wonder Woman, so I look forward to getting recommendations!

Wonder Woman (300) might be my favorite unit, or at least top 5, so she takes it for me, even though I love Wonder Woman (JL) as well.

Biggest version of her missing is, I guess, gritty 90's Vigilante Wonder Woman.

I also don't have much experience with comics Wonder Woman. But I think she's a great character in the Justice League / JL Unlimited animated series. She's a pretty interesting character in Injustice as well, acting as the Grima Wormtongue-like figure to encourage Superman to become a tyrant. Though she has little similarity to the heroic WW in that universe.

Tough to beat Wonder Woman (I) in C3G designs. I really love what WW (JL) does for the faction, though, so she's a close second.

For future designs, I'd love to see a JSA focused Wonder Woman.

I never liked Injustice Wonder Woman, since the take on the character is so wack.

But yeah, Wonder Woman is also a character that I always enjoy when she pops up, but I haven't read a ton of stuff really focused on her. Keep meaning to check more out and it always gets away from me.

I really dug The Hiketeia.

Best Introduction:
I am also looking forward to seeing some Wonder Woman recs, as I haven’t delved into any of her solo series and am wondering the best place to start. I haven’t read much DC in general, compared to Marvel anyway, so she’s near the top of my to-read list.

Iconic/Must Reads:
~ DCeased
Wonder Woman is one of the main heroes who fights the Anti-Life Equation infected. When Superman catches it, she fuses some kryptonite into a magical Sword of Athena and uses it to try to take out undead Supes, but he ends up infecting her. We see her come back in DCeased: Unkillables as the most terrifying powerhouse of an Undead hero you could imagine.
~ Wonder Woman (2017 Film)
Maybe it was the low bar DC had set up beforehand, but the first new WW movie was amazing. Seeing the setup of Themyscira, Diana fighting in WWI, and some interesting villains (Dr. Poison) made for a great feature. As soon as I saw David Thewlis on-screen I knew he was gonna be Ares, so the ending was a bit predictable, but it’s still one of the top movies DC has ever done.
~ Kingdom Come
We see an Elseworlds militaristic Diana who basically leads the warring old school faction of heroes. It was an interesting take.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Wonder Woman (I)
Lasso, Bracelets, and warrior skills = awesome card.

Future Design Ideas
~ Anti-Life Wonder Woman and maybe one where you can use her lasso AND a warrior sword and shield combo, also maybe she could toss her tiara as an SA. Oh and we need Earth-Two Wondy along with Earth-Two Bats to get the classic trinity along with the Justice Society.

Hard to argue with that. The stuff that followed wasn't its best.

But I unironically love Wonder Woman 84 as fully embracing being an 80's movie, so I have weird taste anyway.

Best Introduction:
Haven’t read anything where it feels like these characters take point, Gotham Central looks good, I’ll have to check that one out. :)

Iconic/Must Reads:
~Gotham (TV series)
I really got into Gotham, a great interpretation of early villains and GCPD before the Bat-Family.
~Batman: The Animated Series
Introduced Renee Montoya and developed her, Bullock, and Gordon.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Detective Montoya, although Gordon was an early example of a fun to play support character and the Bad Cops are fun to play under a Crime Lord like Kingpin or somebody.

Future Design Ideas:
A Detective Allen design for Crispus Allen (pre-Spectre) would be cool.

Don’t know much about them, so I’ll probably sit this one out for the most part.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Fantastic Four Epic Collection: The Coming of Galactus
The debut of the Inhumans (Fantastic Four vol. 1 #45). The original Fantastic Four run had a lot of iconic introductions (Black Panther, Silver Surfer, Namor's return), this one also has Medusa during her brief time in the Frightful Four before the Inhuman reveal. Plus, this is the lead-up and debut of Galactus, so a not-bad idea regardless.

War/Realm of Kings looked interesting, it’s by Abnett & Lanning so it's gotta be good right?

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Civil War
Steve is the main Anti-Registration leader all through Marvel's first Civil War event, how it ends was a pretty big deal at the time
- Avengers Epic Collection: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (Avengers #1–20)
Cap's second debut, thawing out of the ice and leading the Avengers
- Captain America Golden Age Masterworks Vol 1 (Captain America Comics #1-4)

The original run (starting in My Greatest Adventure before that book just got retitled to Doom Patrol) is one of the most bizarre and off-beat books of the Silver Age and the Morrison iteration the book is rightfully hailed as a classic.

There's a ton of missing Patrollers, but Mento and Crazy Jane are the ones I'm hoping to relatively soon. They feel like big missing pieces, and would give the team some much-needed army-building options.

Yeah, Beast Boy was fun to try to put into practice, but I'd ultimately consider it a mildly failed experiment. Changeling is just a better way to do it.

Not sure of any classic Beast Boy stories in the comics. I've enjoyed him where he's popped up in the Titans comics I've read, but nothing super stands out.

Teen Titans Vol. 3: Beast Boys and Girls from Geoff Johns' Titans run has my favorite Beast Boy stories. It contains a fun Beast Boy miniseries where Gar deals with some stuff from his past and meets his slacker cousin. Just a nice, light read that also features Nightwing. The volume also contains an arc where Gar fights someone with similar powers.

Changeling is my favorite design. I’m not a big fan of using Beast Boy with the various forms, but I enjoy using a single form (like Cheetah) as filler in Titans armies.

Best Introduction:
I’m not the biggest on Iron Man, so I’m not sure of anything in particular to put here.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Iron Man Epic Collection: The Golden Avenger (Tales of Suspense)
Here you get his origin and he runs right through the first few MKs of his armor, so seeing those is a highlight. I remember I read once that Stan Lee basically tried to make the most unlikable character (pro-war womanizing billionaire) a hit as like a personal challenge to himself and the result is kind of interesting. A lot of it is very gung ho, Cold War era stuff fighting a rotating roster of characters and men in suits from various governments the U.S. didn’t like at the time, so it's kind of repetitive there.
- Civil War
Stark leads the Pro-Registration forces here and plays a big role in the story.
~ Iron Man (2008 film)
Let’s be honest, when most people think of Iron Man these days, they’re thinking of MCU Tony. This movie was a big deal and brought his character from third stringer relevance to one of Marvel’s most popular heroes.
Also, Demon In A Bottle is supposed to be a classic storyline, but I haven’t read that one.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Mark IV is probably the main one I use, although V is a nice tie and any buster can be a good time. Shoutout to the early suit, they can be really fun in a themed army or just in general.

The Great Darkness Saga is considered to be the Legion's "greatest" story, it's just a bona fide classic. (The villain of the piece isn't really a spoiler these days, but I'll say that it's one of his greatest showings as well.) For beginners, I'd also strongly suggest Legion Lost. (The original Abnett and Lanning run, not the N52 one.) It's a tight 12-issue run that's mostly self-contained, and it features a smaller cast of characters than your typical Legion book so you get to spend a good amount of time with all of them.

Only really know the general idea on them, but I’d love a good intro read.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Doomsday Clock
I thought Saturn Girl had a cool part to play, trying to save the unstable future of the universe.

Other than that they’ve been in a few cartoons. I think my favorite Legionnaire is Brainiac 5. I like his characterization of trying to atone for what Brainiac has done and all his gadgets and smarts.

As much as the corny, gee-whiz, holy Bat farts, Batman version of Dick as Robin can be fun and worth a read, for a modern reader, I'd probably go like this:

Best Introduction: Batman: Year Three. Might be worth actually reading A Death in the Family first, since Year Three references that, though. Year Three both gives a retelling of Dick's backstory as Robin and sees him struggling in the modern day with a fairly new identity of Nightwing. It does a nice job of setting the table for where the modern, post-Robin version of the character is at, as well as giving you enough of his history to gain an understanding of the character as Robin.

Iconic/Must Reads

Batman: Prodigal - nothing like seeing Dick finally suit up as Batman for a stint to get the full evolution of the character.

Nightwing Vol 1: Bludhaven - the best of Nightwing solo stuff, IMO, and you get the best version of Blockbuster (basically as a Kingpin rip off) as well. He really feels like Daredevil in this run, which I think works well with the character.

Honorable Mention: "Titans" the live action version on HBO handles the character really well.

Best Design of the Bunch: I like them all, but Nightwing (I) is the engine that drives the Titans faction and that's one of my favorite factions, so he gets the honor.

Future Ideas: I'd love to see a Titans leader Robin version for him.

Oracle is my favorite iteration of the character both in comics and the game. She pioneered the "person in the chair" concept in a way that really modernized superhero team ups.

In terms of comics, I'm a fan of the Gail Simone Era of "Birds of Prey" (#56 to #108). I also really dig how Oracle works with the Bat Family too, especially during Noman's Land.

I very much dislike the post Brightest Day reboot of "Birds of Prey," since the art choices are terrible (every female character has the same body, they just swap hair color).

I'd love to see a Commissioner Barbara to work with Batman Beyond.

For my recommendation, I've been reading Gail Simone's New 52 Batgirl series and am loving it. Batgirl Vol 1: The Darkest Reflection or Batgirl Returns Omnibus
She's also really cool in live-action in season 3 of Titans.

It's close, but she's my favorite Batgirl so I'll have to go with Batgirl.

Any of her turns as Commissioner Gordon would be sweet.

The 1000 point team is the go-to starting army and playtesting army around here, so that's one I'd recommend anyone play if they haven't yet.

Hickman's F4/Future Foundation run is probably the defining modern run for the team, and the best starting point for the 'Hickmanverse' saga in Marvel that culminates in Secret Wars 2015.

Splash

For FF, I of course have to recommend the issue that started it all, Fantastic Four #1, as well as the next few issues that cemented the superhero team into the history of comic book fandom and the public consciousness as a whole. I remember reading once that it was essentially Stan Lee's last ditch effort in the comics biz at the time, and his wife Joan told him basically write a comic that you would read and tell the story you wanna tell or something along those lines. Anyways, without it we wouldn't have almost any of the Marvel heroes we know and love.

For Sue, I read an issue of X-Men First Class once when I was younger, where she was basically mentoring a young Jean Grey for a short time and she basically explains how much she had to hold back, because the extent of her powers could put people in comas and such.

I'll also shoutout John Byrne's Fantastic Four, giving Sue some development and having her change her super-name to the Invisible Woman in issue #284. I don't recall having read it though so I won't be bolding it.

For Ben, I read a neat flashback of him once talking and about and reflecting on his first scuffle with the Hulk in FF #12, looking it up I think it was Hulk & Thing: Hard Knocks. His rivalry with the Hulk is one of the most fun things for me.

edit: I also forgot to mention Marvel: Heroes & Legends #1. This issue was a flashback/rehash of Marvel's first big crossover event, Reed and Sue's wedding. It's about all the villains crashing the party and the secret story on how the heroes won and the FF had their wedding.

Splash
March 13th, 2022, 11:25 PM
For the matchups I'll probably have to go Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and Thing I, but they are all awesome designs. Reed is one of the best leaders in the game, Malice shows the deadlier side of Susan's powers, and Thing II is a must for Fighter armies.

I'd love an Illuminati Reed that works with/is a Visionary, a stronger Invisible Woman (II), and a wrestler Thing. Also Franklin and Valeria are probably overdue, but I'm not familiar with them.

Now you're speaking my language. Wally is my favorite Flash, but Barry is fantastic as well. My recommendations for Barry:

Flashpoint - Even if you've never read Flash, this is a good starting point. It introduces an alternate dystopian universe, and the mystery is figuring out how this happened and why Barry is the only one who notices something's off. The animated movie is great too.

The entire New 52 / Rebirth run of Flash - N52 reset the whole DCU, and with it, Barry became the sole Flash of the universe. This was disliked initially, but it's a great new take on the character and the Rogues. Rebirth started introducing a lot of fun characters and bringing in old favorites from the Flash Family. What I especially love is that the Rogues (Captain Cold and co.) are followed almost as much as Barry, giving you two distinct looks on the city. Picking up the first collection of N52 Flash is another great way to start reading Barry's Flash.

The Flash TV Series - The CW shows vary widely in their quality from season to season, but season 1 of this show is amazing throughout. Lots of twists and turns, with one of the greatest villains in Reverse-Flash. The side characters are particularly good here - notably Vibe and Killer Frost.

As for designs, my favorite Flash card is Barry 1. It was an early card and nailed the character from the get-go. Seeing that 12 move was a "wow" moment for me back when I first found C3G. Easily a top 3 C3G design to me.

Wally is the definitive Flash, to me. His era developed so many things iconic to the character. The entire Waid and Johns run is worth reading (events build on each other really well, especially because the Flash Family and the Rogues have so many characters you follow). Picking up the first Waid run and going from there is the best starting point. But if I have to limit to a few recommendations:

Crossfire - This features Blacksmith usurping control of the Rogues from Captain Cold, and leading them to conquer the city. It's a very different take on the Rogues due to the new leadership.

Dead Heat - Savitar and his cult arrive, requiring the entire Flash Family to team up to stop him.

Chain Lightning - Another Flash Family team up, this time with lots of time travel. Cobalt Blue is the main villain here.

For designs, my favorite is Flash Family Wally of course. The Flash Family are pretty fragile, but their speed lets them play pretty uniquely and they can pull off some fun tricks.

IAmBatman
March 14th, 2022, 09:49 AM
I'll second Chain Lightning as a story run, but I'll go as far as to say you should start with the Terminal Velocity story and follow the entire Mark Waid run from there through Chain Lightning to get the best of Wally West (my favorite Flash).

All sorts of great things in that run like the Speed Force, Impulse, Max Mercury, Savitar, Blacksmith's Rogues, etc.

I think one reason the CW Flash show does so well (and I'd recommend the first season, but can't really recommend it after) is that it at least initially steals the relationship dynamic that Wally has with Linda Park and retrofits it for Barry and Iris.

Favorite card is tough. I love both the OG Flashes (Barry and Wally), have a new appreciation for the awesomeness of the JL version of Barry, but also love Family Wally and Team Flash Barry. So I'll go with Iris West for here ability to let you play multiple Flashes together well. :-D

Splash
March 20th, 2022, 10:05 PM
Ever since catching bits of JL Unlimited as a kid, Wally has been my favorite, but I'm interested in some Barry stories too. Ezra Miller is a kinda fun Barry.

In terms of comics I've caught a bit of Wally in the og New Teen Titans, but nothing fantastic. I just finished Flash by Mark Waid Book One and am hoping to get to the Max Mercury/Johnny Quick/Speed Force stuff. Book One is still mostly Waid getting going I think, so I'm not sure I'd recommend the beginning in particular, but I enjoyed it well enough.
edit: Actually the Born to Run/Year One and ties back to Iris and Barry was an interesting enough start to the run so I will recommend it.

For designs I'll go JL Barry by a hair over the og, but it's a coin toss.
Wally I like the first 280pt one the best, but have yet to run the Flash Family one.

Not familiar enough to know any more ways they could be designed, that blue Wally looks interesting.

Haven't read any JSA stuff, always interesting to see what's recommended as the best.
I liked Mister Terrific (Michael Holt) in DCeased, so he's a character that I enjoy when he shows up. He kinda feels like DC's answer to Reed Richards, which is cool cause they don't have a ton of like top level geniuses like Marvel does.
Alan Scott made some appearances in Green Lantern Rebirth and Doomsday Clock, but nothing major I don't think.
Spectre and Sandman were definitely neat in Kingdom Come.

Sandman is a nifty 80pt figure with a noir feel, Holt is in a close second.

Aside from Earth Two Bats and Wondy, Atom Smasher is a character who shows up sometimes I feel like could use a card.

It's hard to recall specific stories and what not, but in general I recall liking the Geoff Johns run on JSA. I think the Lightning Saga might've been one of the main stories?

Would definitely love to see Atom Smasher! I'd also love to see a Golden Age Hawkgirl.

I've read most of the JSA / JSA All-Stars stuff from around like... 2009 to 2011ish or something? EDIT: 2007.

That was decent but not like super amazing. But I honestly never find like anything Superhero based super amazing.

I do really want to see Cyclone in a cartoon sometime though, she's my favorite JSA person.

My library had a collection of like 70s JSA stuff that I read once, but twas not very good.

I don't really recall any specific JSA stories I've read. The JSA/JLA events are fun team-ups from the pre-crisis era. Stars and STRIPE is mainly centered around Stargirl, but it involves the JSA as well and is a fun read. JSA All Stars has some good stuff. I've read some of the All-Star Squadron from the 40s and that's not really worth going back to unless you really love the oldies.

For designs, I'd love a Steel (Commander, Citizen, whichever) and Helena Wayne. Stargirl is probably my favorite of the designs.

Yes. Chuckernaut is from a What If? issue. Nothing to do with AoA. AoA diverges from the regular timeline when a dude from the future kills Chuck or something I think?

Chuckernaut's timeline diverges when he gets the gem and is trapped underground for years instead of Marko.

I think he might be the only What If? guy we currently have?

Spider-Girl was technically a What-If originally but like.. kinda a reductive take on her?

Like she started as a What-If but she wasn't really a what-if-ed version of a normal dude and she went on to have a very successful solo series.

Some of the other Spidey stuff probably is I think, I can't keep track of what Spiders we have.

Anyway, the point is I want more 70-80s weird What-If dudes. I will stop hijacking AoA time.

I haven't read any AOA, but Colossus is a standout design of those to me. With Steel Body and multiattacks, he is one tough cookie. Blink is also a cool design. She was one of the first characters I only recognized in a comic book movie (Days of Future Past) because I saw the C3G card first.

I also haven't read AoA, funnily enough I do remember reading the short appearance of the 616 Blink from the 90s during the time the Phalanx tried to take over everything. It was a long time ago but I think I remember liking her character in it, I think she sacrificed herself. I think Bishop was in it too and did some cool stuff, but I'm having a hard time remembering. (Looking it up the book was called X-Men: Origin of Generation X with the Phalanx Covenant storyline).

I also liked Blink in X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse. Although it was kind of its own thing, a lot of the alternate character skins for AoA were in that game too, Iceman's, Colossus's, and Sunfire's were very cool in particular.
Plus the intro was awesome:

C3G’s Comics Recommendations
Along with the X-Men and Daredevil, Black Panther has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I remember my main team in Ultimate Alliance was probably Wolverine, Black Panther, Daredevil, and either Moon Knight or Ghost Rider. Similar to Daredevil, T’Challa almost never has a bad run and has had some fantastic solo series.

Best Introduction:
Black Panther {vol. 4}/(Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther?)
There are plenty of reasons why I could suggest The Client or Panther’s Rage, which I include below, but when it comes down to THE best intro to the Black Panther, I have to pick this one. It’s just SO good. Starting off with all the imperialist attempts to conquer Wakanda and some of T’Challa’s backstory, then working into current day with the villain Klaw (who literally killed T’Challa’s father, T’Chaka) getting ready to invade Wakanda, this story is gripping and keeps you reading until the end.
Note: If you are a collector just go for the Complete Collection by Reginald Hudlin Volumes, but Who is the Black Panther is an excellent 6-issue trade for newbies.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- Panther’s Rage {Jungle Action vol. 1}/(Black Panther Epic Collection: Panther's Rage)
Considered one of the first graphic novels in terms of story, this was an excellent run, especially considering it came out in the early 70s. Probably the best thing for anyone wanting to read classic Black Panther. Basic highlights include T’Challa’s first encounter with Killmonger, wrestling a crocodile, and beating up the KKK. It even has some of Marvel’s old style maps and cross-sections with a map of Wakanda and I think one of the Royal Chamber.
- The Client/Black Panther {vol. 3}/(Black Panther By Christopher Priest: The Complete Collection Vol 1 OR Omnibus)
For a while, this was probably the definitive Panther run. Back when Marvel was doing Marvel Knights for cool takes on their grittier street-level heroes, Black Panther entered the shuffle as another cool mid-level character who got a refreshing solo series. Christopher Priest introduces us to King T’Challa through the point-of-view of Everett K. Ross (a completely unprepared U.S. government employee whose job it is to follow T’Challa around). Needless to say, Ross comes to find T’Challa is a badass.
~ Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers (TP OR Black Panther by Reginald Hudlin: The Complete Collection Vol 3)
So this one is kind of cheating, it’s actually about the first meeting of T’Challa’s grandfather, the Black Panther King Azzuri, and Captain America (Steve Rogers) in WWII. After a scuffle, they take down the invading Nazis led by Red Skull and Strucker.
- I read Ta-Nehisi Coates’s A Nation Under Our Feet and it just wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. I've read Between the World and Me, so I knew he would bring some real world seriousness/realism to it, which I thought would be good, but T’Challa came off less of a hero than I liked, more of a tyrant fighting against democracy than a benevolent ruler. I guess I just envisioned Wakanda as more egalitarian, despite having a monarchy, and instead we see them facing the problems a lot of nations/societies destabilized by colonization usually face. Ayo and Aneka were cool though, I hope they get designed at some point, cause their minis are cool as well.
- I do look forward to reading his Rise of the Black Panther though, I love stuff where it goes back to a character’s origins and adds more good story and I also love mantle’s being passed down, so anything on the Black Panthers of the past will also be really cool to see more of.
- I also liked T'Challa, leader of New Wakanda in Marvel Zombies, it’s pretty epic that he was the one to make it through the zombie apocalypse and keep humanity together, for a time anyway.
- Also Civil War is one of the best movies Marvel has made with tons of amazing moments and Chadwick Boseman practically stole the screen as T'Challa.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
II. Avengers is really fun as well and I’ve played the most games with classic, but II was fun to test and I love the strategic Panther who plans.

Future Design Ideas:
This could probably just be a catchall for all the Wakandan and Wakandan-adjacent characters since we don’t have any besides T’Challa yet.
It’s tough to choose one. I might go with Black Panther (Azzuri), but I’d like to see Shuri, T’Chaka, Okoye, the Dora Milaje, M'Baku, Killmonger, Ayo and Aneka, White Wolf, the Hatut Zeraze, there’s a lot.
In Coates's run there were some cool powers too, like the neat tracking ability, but I can't remember what it was called. So there's room for another T'Challa design as well, maybe a clear leadership one for when we have more Wakandans.

Green Lantern Rebirth and Green Lantern No Fear are pretty much the start of the Geoff Johns run and for me, it's all about Johns (though I don't mind dipping back into some earlier Kyle Rayner v. Parallax stuff).

Iconic Must Reads
Sinestro Wars
Blackest Night
If you're feeling frisky, I also enjoyed a lot of Kyle Rayner's solo book (women in fridge meme) mostly due to the match up with Hal's Parallax. Probably better to just read Zero Hour to explore that, though.

Thematic Favorites
Hard to beat classic Hal Jordan GL, though there's a lot of stuff I love in this faction.

Future Ideas
The biggest thing I want to see is more constructs (of all colors). Though more Black Lanterns would be cool too.

Arch-vile

Green Lantern is my next favorite comic behind Flash. The entire Geoff Johns & Peter Tomasi run (they go simultaneously, covering Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps, respectively) is worth reading - this covers Hal's return in Green Lantern Rebirth to the introduction of the Sinestro Corps, the other various Lantern corps, Blackest Night, and the followups to that. The art in this run is incredible, tons of pages showcase tens of lanterns duking it out. I was introduced to Green Lantern with the Sinestro Corps War, and I think that's a fine enough starting point. At any point you enter, you're going to have some unexplained questions, but I caught on easily enough. Green Lantern: Secret Origin is the modern retelling of Hal's origin if you just want the origin story.

Top 3 must reads for me are:
Sinestro Corps War - Iconic showdown between Hal & Sinestro and one of DC's best comics. Each of the major Lanterns gets something to do, and the Sinestro Corps has a ton of big powerful villains.
Blackest Night - This is what Johns' run built to over the course of years. It's a fun read that affects the entire DC universe. It's especially impactful if you've read the lead-in to Blackest Night that's introduced the rest of the rainbow Lantern corps.
War of the Green Lanterns - This takes place after Blackest Night, and involves all 4 Earth Lanterns using different colored rings to take on the entire mind-controlled Green Lantern Corps. It's definitely goofy, but this highlights the different rings which is one of the most fun concepts in the GL universe. Getting to see these characters struggle with mastering a different emotion is fun.

For wanted future designs, I want to see a Hal of each color just because that'd be funny, and like Bats said, more constructs of any color would be great. Green's got plenty of options but the others could use some constructs to help army building.

I think I may be the only person on the planet who has read it, but Green Lantern: Mosaic is really great. Depending on how you view it, it's the story of John Stewart's self-actualization as a godlike being or his descent into madness. (Or possibly both.) Also features the death of Ch'p, which is so bizarre that it's hilarious.

Green Lantern: Rebirth - this was where I started and I thought it was great, it doesn't just reinvigorate Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, it also gives you a great picture of who John, Guy, and Kyle are as Lanterns, so I'd recommend it for both Hal and John.

For Hal:
- Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Book One has Rebirth, but also goes right into Green Lantern vol. 4 and includes Green Lantern: Secret Files & Origins 2005, as well as Green Lantern Corps Recharge (which I might've liked the best looking back).
- Sinestro Corps War
- I haven't read any yet, but I've heard the old Green Lantern/Green Arrow stuff is pretty good.

For John:
- Justice League/Justice League Unlimited is why John Stewart is my favorite Lantern.
- I haven't read his debut yet, I think it's also in the Lantern/Arrow series, really gotta check that out.
Unfortunately, I don't know a lot of comics where he's the main character and haven't read much of League either.

Theme Favorites: Classic GL for both of them, but JL John is definitely close and very fun to play.

Future:
Well (other than JL Hal), Hal was the Spectre I guess and John had an Indigo ring.

The short-lived Wolverine and the X-Men animated series is probably my favorite Wolverine media. No comic recs (DC guy). Love all of our Wolverine designs. Probably slight preference towards the OG 280 point version.

Loved a lot about that show. Second season was set up so well too. would have been great to get it...

Best Introduction:
~ X2: X-Men United (film)
My favorite superhero movie. I’m sure there are still some fans who think Hugh Jackman was the wrong choice for Wolvie, but he pretty much has come to embody the character since the first X-Men film came out. I’d go ahead and say watch every X-film with him in it, the Wolverine and Logan are also epic movies.

Iconic/Must Reads:
- The Incredible Hulk #181 (X-Men Epic Collection: It's Always Darkest Before the Dawn)
Wolverine’s first appearance. It’s fun and cheesy, I love it. It’s in a couple of trade collections, the one I put basically has all the random X-Men appearances between their 60s original series cancellation and 70s Uncanny.
- Wolverine vol. 2 #10 (collected in Wolverine Epic Collection: Madripoor Nights)
So when I was younger, I somehow got ahold of some action figures of Wolverine and Sabretooth, looking it up it was called Marvel Legends Face-Off. It came with one of the first Wolverine comics I read, probably the most notable fight between the two from a time before Wolverine was Wolverine. It really shows how messed up Sabretooth is and basically begins the tradition of how Sabretooth pays a visit to Wolverine every year on his birthday.
~ Old Man Logan
I love alternate history stories and post-apocalypse stories, so this may be my favorite Logan comic (even though it’s not the main James Howlett that we know). I’d recommend this to any fan of Wolverine.

Thematic Favorites

Best Design of the Bunch:
Wolverine (I) just has it all; the claws, the healing, and the rage. A spot on rendition of Wolvie in Heroscape.

Future Design Ideas:
Old Man Logan for sure
