Hi Scaper!

Now my next bridge, this will be a 2hex wide Orc Battle Bridge with crowīs nest attached to the middle of the bridge, here are some step by step images:

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/orcbridge_01.jpg
First i placed some small wood pieces to make the bridge snap on the hexes.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/orcbridge_02.jpg
glue some wood pieces as base onto the edges.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/orcbridge_03.jpg
Added some poles... the ground will be made of bamboo sticks.

Chicano, if you get a chance upload your avatar.

I like these "as you goes" that you are doing. Could or would you put them all in one forum so that it's all in one place? Then we know where to go to find "your work". if you get what I am saying.

I can't wait to see you put this together.

What kind of sticks are you using to form the hex locks with ? are you cutting up craft sticks?

You should definitely put your stuff in a single thread and then just update it. I really like the look of this bridge too. I'm curious as to what you are making the frames out of also.

yes, iīm splitting mini craft sticks (the ones i used on my first bridge) into two pieces. Toothpicks or matches might work as well. :)

Wow! Now that I see it finished I just got to say.. THAT IS AWESOME! I don't think you need to add any dots or anything to show where the hexes are. It is only two hexes wide it is easy enough to tell where you are going. Great work man! Thanks for sharing!!

bad_calvin: As you see i decided not to make a curved surface. I asked a mod if he can merge my bridge threads, so i hope that soon all the bridges will be in one thread.

You may already be heading in this direction but if not. You can get some "vines" for real cheap at a craft store to drape over that.
It might add a little bit of "panzee" to it. ahem.. I mean "daisy eater".. I mean elf to it.

QBakies
January 23rd, 2007, 02:14 PM

I think that either the arches might be too high as the previous poster stated. But, i think that if you were to leave them at that height that some vines would go a long way to make it more elf like.
I like what you have done, and it certainly is nice. I just think it might need a little something more. :)
but it is looking great and it is going to look great on the table! Great work!

Looking excellent, Ch1can0! Just as with your other bridges, I am amazed by this so far.

QBakies

Just a suggestion...instead of the gems why not flock the bridge and then use short vines and moss to give it an 'elvish' look?

NecroBlade
January 23rd, 2007, 04:12 PM
Just a suggestion...instead of the gems why not flock the bridge and then use short vines and moss to give it an 'elvish' look?I agree, I liked this when it was first suggested (though I do like the gems, too). I also think using the vines on the arches would be a good idea. I like the arches, but as they are now, they stand out way too much.

bad_calvin
January 23rd, 2007, 04:28 PM
The vines will fill in the empty space and make more of a reason for them to have the height they do. I think that would be a great finishing touch to an already outstanding project.

LilNewbie
January 23rd, 2007, 04:34 PM
Awesome bridge, Ch1can0! I agree that adding vines would be the perfect touch but you could attach them to the Hexes or run them underneath the hexes making it appear as supporting the walkway of the bridge. Then coil some vines around the arches to finish up the elvish motif.

Thanks for all the feedback and the ideas. The elvish Bridge will need some more work on it as the other bridges i think... I will check a store if i find some other stuff for the elvish bridge. Not sure about flocking the bridge, the green wood tiles with green stuff on it... wouldnīt change much of the aspect, would it?

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/elfbridge_22.jpg
Cavalier: you asked how the arches are made, i cutted segments out of one of these wooden rings.

The really big arches.... iīm not sure about that myself. You know, these elfes... tend to exagerate a bit... ;)

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/elfbridge_24.jpg
so i made this smaller arches, more like handrails. Painted the leafs in a darker green with a silver line as an elvish element on the bridge.

I really like that low arch with the leaf cutout, but the big arches still aren't doing anything for me.

I think that flocking the bridge would totally change the feel in a positive way. It would make it seem more natural and organic. Just like an elf would want. The thing I loved about your first two bridges is that they both conveyed the feeling that humans and orcs, respectively, really did build them. The human bridge was very neat and logical with a traditional look. The orc bridge was big, sharp, and menacing which was perfect. This elf bridge seems a bit underdone to me.

Just personal taste, your work is still awesome!:D

Chicano, that elf bridge has a ton of potential.

The higher arches are not working at all. They could work, if the angle was the same as the lower arches, but instead they are visually jarring. I would definitely nix the upper arches altogether.

I would look for stuff that looks like celtic knots. Something organic and patterned. Obviously you can't cut something like that out of wood, unless you're an incredibly accomplished scrollsaw artist (I am most certainly not one of those). But you might be able to heat transfer a pattern onto the wood. It's seriously easy to do, if you have the tools (woodburnisher and a laser printout). Or you could woodburn a pattern into the hex tops.

If you have more of those arch pieces, what about gluing two or three segments together, one inside the other, and putting a pattern on the resulting (taller) rail? Then muddy it up some - not literally, but add some 'stuff'. Fake grass wound around the rails, Spanish moss-type vegetation hanging down, sponge-brush paintjobs. Right now it's too clean. It looks art-deco.

But like I said, it has massive potential. It's just that, compared to the awesome of the orc bridge, it lacks a degree of visual interest.

deliverymanxas

I would definately trim the larger arcs down a bit...that way they match the smaller arcs.
I like IMax's idea of going for something that looks a little more Celtic...

Definately has all the potential to be an outstanding set of custom made terrain add-ons. I love em

Taelord

You could leave the big arches on and cover them in ivy, stringing it across the top, creating more of a tunnel.

I HAVE DESCOVERED A CHEAP AND MUCH EASIER WAY TO APPLY FLOCK.
instead of wasting bottles and bottles of glue, do this....

dump the flock in a plastic mixing bowl. just add watter. mix it around until its got a nice maple syrup kinda feeling. next, grab a small clumb and spread it on as thick as you want. wait about 1 week indors, or set it outside to dry. i do not suggest a hair drier because it can mess it up and possibly melt the plastic. once it dries, it will stay firmly, and will have a "natural" feel to it.

something else i've discovered:

flock is just ground up collored sponge. its sponge dust. thats why it soaks up watter so good.

I see no reason to post except to say I agree with Imax. The only way I could see the higher arches working is if they had vines wrapped around them to throw off the difference in angles. Otherwise I would make them a bit lower. I am really impressed with how this looks so far, I think you have a great imagination and I can't thank you enough for sharing with everyone.

I think the sense he is going for is not so much of a wild elf, but more of a high, regal elf bridge. The arches and gems would seem to indicate that.

Imax: you had that cool idea of adding something like celtic knots with a woodburner. I donīt have such a tool, but i like the idea and i made a kind of pseudo-elvish tribal symbols and draw the outlines with a pencil on the middle base. It was kind of tricky, cause all was already glued together and between the hand rails i hadnīt much space, next time drawing should be the first thing to do... :)

Ch1can0,

I am somewhat an artist myself. I have done alot of sculptures, paintings, charcoal drawings, and various other things. It takes alot to impress me when it comes to art, and I have to tell you, I am truly, truly impressed. You have done a phenomenal job on these bridges I and want to commend you on your hard work.

I do have just a couple of questions for you about the construction of your masterpieces.

1. Can you get the material from a Wally World, or do you have to go to a craft shop.
2. About how much did you spend total on all the material?

Thanks Again

brickman1444: A Marro Bridge out of marro hive-like material? I would make it out of chicken bones... :) hehe, just kidding ;-)

wicked cool: Those are called Kroot Warriors from WH40k, some nice minis :)

HS ~ KNT: Hey, so youīre going to make a bridge? Cool! Looking forward to see your ideas. Especially a Marro Bridge is quite an interesting theme for a bridge. http://home.arcor.de/fellechner/smilies/jo.gif

asking for Trade: Thanks for your interest. But i actually made the bridges to use them on my maps. Sorry, there will be no kind of "mass production" as they are handcrafted and unique ;) Perhaps some day i will give bridges away, donīt know yet. And i live in Europe so shipping to the U.S. would be quite expensive anyway... :-/

Taylor21279: Thank you for the compliment :D

Here is no Wally World on LV-426... äh Europe, is that a special company? I bought the stuff in an ordinary craft store.

The cost of the bridge.. Well not much. I would say it costs more of your free time and creativity than actually money ;) And itīs difficult to calculate for me, because i already had some stuff laying around here that i used for the bridges like glue, some tools, paint, brushes. And the stuff i bought... it wasnīt used up for the three bridges yet....

Here some examples: The chipboards i bought for the hextiles of the Elf Arch Bridge cost 2,20 dollar, but i just used one of the 4 panels. The mini craft sticks (planks of the human bridge and some other stuff) 2,10 dollar, i think iīve used a fifth part of those until now. The spits costed around 1 dollar for 30 spits (ok, used almost all on the orc bridge ;) ) 1m wood slat for the structures and poles about 1 dollar, the rope for the human bridge 1 dollar but i still have 2 meters of it...

Bye all! Ch1can0.

Taylor21279

Wally World is what we call our local Wal-Mart. I don't know if you have any in your area, but I'm sure you have heard of it. I appreciate the list, as I am headed out now to grab some of the material.

My first project will probably be the Marrow bridge, and if it comes out like I envision it, I will be glad to post some Pictures to show how it came out.

Thank You Ch1can0

Hi Skeletor!

yes, iīve started to make a Samurai Bridge. Nice picture from Boardgame geeks! The Bridge iīm doing is a bit larger, one hex more than the Orc Battle Bridge:

1. round, the base.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_01.jpg
I considered an other shape than the bridges before, it will cover these sand tiles.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_02.jpg
Some small wood sticks to make the bridge snap on the hexes. The hexring in the middle can be used optional for an one 1 hex column to snap into it.

Base Structure.

The planks with sanded edges for a more natural look

Wow, that's going to kick butt.

EDIT: And you might consider a double level entrance like this too:

http://www.photopassjapan.com/traditional_architecture/image96.html

That's pretty common.

EDIT: Some more pics that show the inverted arch on top a little better - not typically on a bridge but you do have a gate thing going on already...

February 3rd, 2007, 06:26 PM
thx Kenjib :) Hehe, i saw similar pictures like the ones you posted that inspired me... That gates were not on bridges, but i think they fit to the japanese theme... :)

3. Round, Assembling

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_12.jpg
Tiles together.... mhhh, the gate is pretty high.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_13.jpg
I wanted grimnak to be able to pass the gate... But the high gate looks strange.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_14.jpg
So i break apart the pieces to cut down the gate a bit.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_15.jpg
mmh, proportions are better now imo, and at least still high enough for Brunak. And the Samurais of course =)

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_16.jpg
not finished yet... :) darn, that red looks a bit strange :? Will paint the bridge it in a different, darker red tone.

Next round... some decoration. :)

Very nice. I like the touch of the "Spirit Walk" twist to the bridge. So, if your figure is being followed by a Shades of Bleakwoode figure, is the Shades of Bleakwoode figure forced fall in the water?!?

Rather than repainting to a darker red, what about a black wash and a clear lacquer finish? I think that might give a more realistic/organic Oriental feel to the bridge.

That's great. I guess I didn't understand what you meant to do with the top piece when I posted. Very cool. I agree that it might look better a slightly darker red, though I have no idea about what would work better to achieve that - i.e. Malechi's idea vs. repainting.

malechi: i will try it, thx for the hint!

4. round, Deco. :)

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_17.jpg
Took these laundry-clasps

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_18.jpg
Cut of the round ends

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_19.jpg
Painted them black. These will be glued on the ends of the handrails.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_20.jpg
I choose some japanese Kanji symbols, that i want to place on the gate.
Took a ledge, cut some squares, painted them white, penciled the symbols and then painted with a black CD marker.

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_21.jpg
all four are done

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/samuraibridge_22.jpg
here you can see the size of the little kanji symbols. Will be glued on the gate...

But first of all i have to change that red.... ;-)

I can't speak on Ch1can0 behalf, but I used the hex platform to start then once I got the base adhered together, I removed the hexes and went from there. I think you should give it a shot. If you don't like doing it, you wouldn't have lost much. The wood isn't really all that expensive. Maybe $4.00 for a good amount of wood material.

Hey Chicano,
Props to you for your bridges man, beautiful!
I am going to be trying to make an Orc bridge,
I have one question,
in the following picture near what I believe is called the "crows nest"
There are two popsicle stick looking things glued to the tiny base pieces and attached to the big plank pieces.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10242/orcbridge_03.jpg

What is there intended purpose?
Do they help keep the tiny stick in the base at that point stay attached to the rest of the bridge.. or are they actually supposed to be supporting the bridge?
They also look like they are on an angle.
Could you describe that one step in a little more dtail?

Thanks!

Miko_Kudou: thx for your comment :) I donīt think i will make another samurai bridge, i would rather like to try another theme. A Borg Bridge for example =)

You want to try your own? Donīt forget to post some pics :)

Bloodthorn: The roof of the gate are just segments of the wood circle i already used on the elven bridge... Cool that you want to make your own bridge!

Ketch: the intended purpose of the popsicle was to support/stabilize the tiny sticks around the hexes. But these popsicles and the tiny sticks arenīt really necessary to support the bridge. Just if you want the crowīs nest to rest on a single hex, but normaly the crowīs will just hang free in the air... :) The big plank pieces will be enough in that case. Hope that helps a little... and sorry for my crappy english

Skeletor: Didnīt i mention that the samurai bridge is bloodpainted? ;-)

Sorry, no sales planned, just made for fun & personal use.

thx @ all for your feedback :-D

...Ketch: the intended purpose of the popsicle was to support/stabilize the tiny sticks around the hexes.

Thanks man!

These bridges just get better and better
The Samurai one is, in my opinion, the best one so far.
Cant wait to see whats next!

Absolutely amazing. I love the Orc Bridge the best...but the Samurai bridge is a close, close second. Next you should make a marro bridge. I have a couple ideas in mind for the 'twisted' 'death' 'alien' theme...but it would require a few latex gloves...and some rubber cement on top of whatever you could design for the structure.

Ch1cano:
you're true an artist. I said this to you in the past for your graphic skills, and i say this now again.

I have only some critics about the elf bridge: it appears "poor" for the classic "rich" elf standard. (i hope you can understand me). I mean: there should be some more "complicated", "convoluted" shapes as decoration.

I have an idea about decorate it a bit more: do you remember these green hooks used for christmas-tree balls? they have a sort of § (S) shape.
Maybe you can use them as decoration between the arch and the floor.

Sorry it is too late, but i've seen this thread right now.

Again, i really love your bridges :)

has anybody thought of using Sculpty (its like a craft clay that soft like play-doh, but much softer and it bakes in the oven to harden). B/c I'm thinking of doing a variant of the Elf Bridge but make it a stonework-style one using "stone" colored sculpty. Just thought I would ask.

Hey CHicano, what did you use to cut out the balsa wood sheet for the elf bridge? I cannot cut it with anything. :(

Hey CHicano, what did you use to cut out the balsa wood sheet for the elf bridge? I cannot cut it with anything. :(

Balsa wood should be easy to cut with an X-acto knife or razorblade with a little bit of pressure. How thick is the Balsa wood that you bought? The thinker, the more difficult to cut. Be EXTREMELY careful when using sharp objects. I've always been thought to cut away from yourself. I can't express how careful you need to be. *cut at your own risk*

Sorry Ch1can0 for answering, hope I didn't offend you. Maybe you use a different technique?

another question...the silver "spiky" railings you did for the orc bridge...did you drill a hole through the two posts and then just threaded the "sharp pointy stick" between them? Or did you glue them in pieces parts? Just curious...just trying to find techniques for when I make my bridges.

Thankx

thx@all for your feedback :)

parduz: thank you! Also for your solidscape as i used it to plan the basic layout of the bridges :D Not sure about that hooks, i think we donīt use those on our christmas trees so not sure how they look like..

Miko_Kudou: i glue the railings in pieces parts, as i think itīs easier than to drill trough the little posts, and it just looks the same ;)

Those are simply out of control! Oh if only I had the time and patience...but I have enough trouble setting stuff up right out of the box without adding stuff like that. Still, they look fantastic.

Absolutely love the samurai bridge. But as you can probably tell from my avatar and sig, I've got kind of a soft spot for them. Awesome job on all.

checking if the structure has the same height as the sandtiles, yep =)

If you're still around Ch1can0, I think a pic is missing here, how did you organise the stepped support rails?
