View Full Version : C3V/SoV 3D Printable Proxies

As some of you might know, some C3V figures have become hard to find or prohibitively expensive. In the spirit of Dad_Scaper's Alternate Sculpts thread (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=56165) I wanted to make a thread collecting the work of the community to make 3d-printable replacement figures, whether they be simply scanned copies or new models meant to evoke the original.

I'm starting off the thread with the work of @Sgt.Erock (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/member.php?u=46799) , who has given me permission to post the models he has kitbashed together.

Sgt.Rock's thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/SgtErock117/designs)

- Tyrian
- Skull Demon
- Shieldsmiths of Granite Keep
- Azazel
- Kon-Tar-Na
- Mounted!Hrognak's Howdah
- Calibrax

Please post here with any models you've crated or found and I'll add them to the OP. Robbdaman's work can be found in the following post.

For whatever reason Thingiverse isn't showing all designs, so I'm linking direct to the Collection of C3V/SoV proxies (https://www.thingiverse.com/robbdamangames/collections/valhalla-classic-c3v-sov-figures). To fix messed up links I've been doing some reworking on my older models and will start uploading my newest stuff to Rob's C3V/SoV Proxy Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/robbdamangames/designs).

Did you finally get a printer? I finally started regularly printing on my resin one. Im about 5 batches in so far. So far Ive printed about 20 miniatures. Had a few failures but am learning how to support and remove supports to improve my process. Im not a huge fan of having to deal with the resin compared to fdm. All the extra gloves, and chemicals, along with using my respirator mask and all the extra work I put in to get it ventilated properly was all a PITA. I suppose as I do it more it wont be as big a nuisance. Right now Im printing some alternative minis I put together for Star Wars Legion along with some cool ogres I picked up but I may get back to printing heroscape stuff with all the cool work being done here.

Added a Proxy for Bahadur.

Very nice!! How did you create this one? Curious if there are other wolves on thingiverse.

It was a werewolf model from thingy or prusa or cult, etc, I don't remember. I sliced it's arms off and swapped them and then added a tail, ponytail, grabbed an axe 3d model I found and then a couple pieces of armor. I then sculpted the arms to fists, added spikes and wraps on his arms and cleaned it up. Added a scar over the eye and viola.

There are other wolf 3D models out there. I think I grabbed as much as I could find that were good. Not all would match other Varkaanan without a great deal of work. I may work up a few more.

Thanks for your work to get these models put up!

Though, I actually have tried to print a couple of the files and they haven't worked for me - when I load the files into Cura, it says "your model is not manifold. The highlighted areas indicate either missing or extraneous surfaces." I am very new to 3D printing and don't understand what the problem is... was the file made to be used with a different slicer? Or would you know how to fix it in Cura?

It's likely due to fixes to the model where there were holes. Older versions of Cura don't typically have the error. As many of these are kitbash from a variety of other models they are not perfect but any holes should be covered by other pieces of the model.

What Ive noticed with printing on my two types of printers is that if the model has holes or imperfections my fdm printer has problems with it whereas my resin printer usually does fine. It would have to be repaired most likely. There as a handful of programs that do that.

It's all depending on settings, in the case of a FDM if you want less than 100 infill then it could print with whatever infill pattern outside the model making it fragile or incomplete. If anyone finds any issues please let me know, I may have my Cura settings dialed in so that I do not notice any issues other might.

SCALE

@TREX (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/member.php?u=9140)

As for scale, the scale is not absolute--it depends on where the camera is placed relative to the figures.

Many of the C3V figures and the D1-D3 figures have non-standard base sizes.

Here are the correct base sizes for various figures so that the figure can be scaled correctly:

Figure: Diameter (in inches)
D1-D3 D&D figures: 1.00"
Gorilla Troopers: 1.558"
Heroclix (Soldier and others): 1.360"
Quahon (outside toe to outside toe wide): 2.1"
Skull demon (Skeletons, Nhih Scrihr, Cathar): 1.190"
Varkaanan Wolves: 1.565"
Agaumo: 1.9"
Zettian Deathwings (across the flats): .987"
Zombie Hulk: 1.9"
Major J15: 2.0"

Normally I would smooth out some of the artifact pits and bumps, remove unwanted bridges, thicken and fix swords and other thin pieces, close holes, and other types of repairs during cleanup (for example the pit in Bramcephys's right temple above his eye). That's why it normally takes me 1/2 hour or so per figure to do the cleanup.

Not sure if all the raw scans are the same typically but I've resized up 600% to get to where the ones I've done look proper sized. As far as the ones WK has completed they need to be enlarged 2540% I believe.
I moved this discussion to the C3V thread, but in short: the RAW scans are NOT to scale. They need to be sized by the base or by the size of the actual figure.

During processing is when I correct the scale.

How do you determine scale? I've just trial and errored it. If I can find exact measurements of a figure somewhere I can adjust to exact size but unless I have one I can't just measure it myself.

Heroclix (Soldier and others): 1.360"
Quahon (outside toe to outside toe wide): 2.1"
Skull demon (Skeletons, Nhih Scrihr, Cathar): 1.190"
Varkaanan Wolves: 1.565"
Agaumo: 1.9"
Zettian Deathwings (across the flats): .987"
Zombie Hulk: 1.9"
Major J15: 2.0"

For ones not listed, look for ones from the same company. For example, the Varkaanan are from Confrontation. So are the Cathar Spearmen. So the base sizes are the same.

If you have a specific figure you are unsure about, post it here and I'll try to give more exact information. I don't have all the figures, which is why I measured the bases before returning them to their owner.

I haven't measured anything but could though really measurements in mm would be easier to teuse in things like Blender.

Major J15 is one proxy I worked up recently, but haven't entirely finished. I should really work on getting the ones I have up here for use, I have a good dozen or more.

Here are a few of WK's Scans that I fixed and scaled.
Arashara Goshiri (https://www.mediafire.com/file/8df44axsv37y1b7/Arashara+Goshiri+Scaled.stl/file)

Beorn Boltcutter (https://www.mediafire.com/file/r2v02888dlph5hp/Beorn+Boltcutter+Scaled.stl/file)

Bramcephys (https://www.mediafire.com/file/shbismexcw6spgt/Bramcephys+Finished+Scaled.stl/file)

These are all to scale exactly. I have all these figures and was able to measure them to the exact, then scaled accordingly. If printing in Resin, Bramcephys will need to be cut into pieces for all smaller build plates. I am planning on keying his arms.

I closed up some of the larger holes I seen in Brams back amongst other things but wasnt sure how much smoothing sculpting and changing you did. Good to know. Maybe Ill rework those a little more.

I've learned that Multicloud is nice for combining multiple cloud storage accounts but often requires me to log in over and over to keep the connection active. I should just dump things over to a Thingiverse account or something. I'll try working on that in the next day or so. Let me know if any specific links are giving you trouble and I can upload those first.

Yeah, weird. You can see the file but trying to download it's like it just says "no". I know others have had no issues in the past either. I'll redo all of it.

Ah that'll be a nice collection. I had started on a Swiftfang proxy but wasn't liking how it was turning out. I do have some Super Battle Droid models I modified which work well for the Zettian Infantry, pretty easy to swap those in. Also have Geonosian Starfighter for the Zettian Deathwings.

I've just cleaned up and rebuilt Talingul (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4774258) from your old file and uploaded it to my Thingi.

Thought I'd share a few of the proxies I chose for some characters found off of thingiverse in the meantime. Quorik Warwitch and Pel the Hill Giant require Pla since use heat attaching parts from multiple prints.
Some of these may need upscaling such as Otar, Kuthnak, Owlbear. I can't remember which.

Can I make a suggestion? Why not make this thread into a subforum?

-We could have a central thread that indexed all figures that had printable proxies.

-Have a central request thread that kept a tally of how many times a figure was requested to get 3D scans and made into a printable file so the requested figures could be ranked by priority.

-Then we could also have a painting guide of sorts that shows a simplified painting guide for each figure that's gotten a file, or at the very least include photos of a painted figure so people that print them know how to paint them on each side.

I don't think this is overkill. Sifting through thingaverse and reading through this thread as more and more posts are made will only get more and more cumbersome.

Set of lower resolution C3V scans (mostly in Blender) (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1BHRgsDzjLqrHSOTEqqIlrbXxkMr-N3MV?usp=sharing)

Higher resolution C3V scans (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1D2qi6Eit6bUy41gxEsryUqyzQDuZ9OCL?usp=sharing)

These files need cleanup before printing.

SCALE

@TREX (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/member.php?u=9140)

As for scale, the scale is not absolute--it depends on where the camera is placed relative to the figures.

Many of the C3V figures and the D1-D3 figures have non-standard base sizes.

Here are the correct base sizes for various figures so that the figure can be scaled correctly:

Figure: Diameter (in inches)
D1-D3 D&D figures: 1.00"
Gorilla Troopers: 1.558"
Heroclix (Soldier and others): 1.360"
Quahon (outside toe to outside toe wide): 2.1"
Skull demon (Skeletons, Nhih Scrihr, Cathar): 1.190"
Varkaanan Wolves: 1.565"
Agaumo: 1.9"
Zettian Deathwings (across the flats): .987"
Zombie Hulk: 1.9"
Major J15: 2.0"

I don't know the first thing about how to clean these scans up but there are quite a few left in these folders that still need to be cleaned up so people can print them. What can be done and how can it be done? I don't know if I'll be able to be of much assistance because I have never done it before but I'm willing to try cleaning up the files if someone can share how it's done. I just don't want this part of the C3V project slowing down because 3D printing these minis is going to be how we keep them accessible in the future. Getting them all scanned for printing is important.

I will admit my bias though because I just bought my first printer so I am excitedly joining the 3D printing space with the Anycubic Photon Mono.

I really will help though if I know how. I don't want to feel like I'm asking more of you and not helping or contributing in some way. I'd feel like a jerk getting you to do something for me you wouldn't have needed to do otherwise. Is there a specific way you produce scans? Maybe I can make scans and send them in. I don't really want to send my minis anywhere but I can take photos and put them into a software if that is how it works.

EDIT: Also when I put many of the files in this thread onto the build plate in Photon Workshop software the scale was TINY. the miniature was literally 3.42mm tall on the Skeletons of Annellintia. Why is this happening? How tall should they be?

First, about the scale: My models are in inches, so you need to scale them by 25.4 (2540%) to convert the inches to mm.

Second, 3DF Zephyr, the photogrammetry program I use, just came out with an update, and it seems like I'm getting better scans with the new settings.

Out of your list, I can get decent scans of:

8th Infantry Pathfinder
Cathar Spearmen
Command Courier

Elaria the Pale
Elian Sidhe
Gorilla Troopers
Jonah Hex
Martial La Hire
Myrddin
Preyblood Thrall
Van Nessing

I will post the new models soon, and make a quick tutorial I use to clean them up for printing. Give me a few days to do that.

That is absolutely true but honestly I found that those proxies were so good you couldn't really tell the difference unless you'd has the real deal sitting next to them. We need real scans either way but they'll do for the time being.

One thing I ran into so far is that some of the proxies made for C3V had parts too thin to print properly. I am wondering if that is a product of me not setting my setting correctly or if the resin I'm using just doesn't set strong enough for bits that thin.

So far the Havech Eradicators haven't printed because their blades are too thin and there's a thin shell around the big gun that was paper thin.

The Honor Guard of the Blasted Land's helmets were too thin for my printer, they just flaked off like paper that had gotten brittle.

The Red Mantis Blade Dancers were beautiful but their blades were so thin the supports snapped them as I carefully removed them. Then the remaining swords just came off in my hand.

I'm using Perusa Slicer to add my supports and then slicing with the Photon Workshop's standard settings. Should I be doing something differently? The resin is just regular Anycubic resin. I'm generating 70% standard supports right now.

Those are my creations but you'd have to ask someone who printed them in resin though as I have not. On my FDM printer they all print solid, perhaps for resin they are too thin to slice properly.

I agree that some of the proxies are very worthy for the meantime. Perhaps there should be separate threads though at this point for proxies and the actual figures since things are starting to get mixed up.

I experienced the issue with thin parts on my ender 3 trying to print the acolytes of vorganund, though my fdm miniature printing skills are lacking. So far with resin prints, they have come out flawless. I use chitubox, smaller supports on figures with smaller islands, and check the angle of each figure when slicing to make sure most of the figure is extending at around a 110 degree angle.

Are your exposure time settings set to your model of printer?
Do you clean the resin vat of excess partially cured resin after each print?

To take off supports, after dunking in ipa, I use a gradual back and forth twist motion holding the model with one hand and the support base with the other. And for really fragile support contact spots, pinching them off to remove them beforehand.

Tmac2200

My exposure time is 2 seconds and my layers are 0.05mm. I honestly haven't messed with the supports properties, I've just used the standard ones in PerusaSlicer. I only use Perusa for the automatic supports on reccomendation from a YouTube channel I subbed to. If Chitubox is better I may switch to it.

I'm trying enlarging the prints a bit, not enough that they are oversized but hopefully enought that their thin parts aren't so flimsy. So far they are better but still pretty weak. I'm hoping with layers of paint that they'll hold up to being handled.

Outside of that I wanted to ask, is there any possibility of the Buccaneers of Tortuga, the Cathar Spearmen, or the Microcorp Troopers being scanned? They seem to be the hardest to aquire squads that have yet to be scanned.

My list isn't totally complete as it seems some figures become more scarce by the day or waver between available and unavailable, price varying. So there are figures I'm not aware of that are now unavailable or pricey.. Havech, etc

And some such as the Red Mantis Blade dancers & Acolytes I didn't include since the proxy models are pretty good (Kursus proxy is good too).
Personally I would like to see scans for buccaneers since it is hard to find decent looking pirate models/figures and Kira, Quorik Warwitch and Kon-Tar-Na, priority, for being currently unobtainable with unique models.

If you do make a video on how to clean the scans, I'd also like to contribute where I can in getting that process done.

I really appreciate everything you are doing White Knight . You have done a service to the community here on Heroscapers. I wish I knew how to help contribute. I saw that there were jpg images with object files in a folder earlier in this thread with the gorilla troopers and the rest of the paizo heroes (Elaria the Pale, ect) among others that haven't been finished yet. Are the object files something that is printable or do they still need to be cleaned up? I'd love to print those minis if it's already possible.

So over the past few days I've re-run all the pictures I have of C3V figures and created better models.

I will try and post the new models later today, along with a quick explanation of the steps I take to clean them up.

C3V new models (need cleaning) (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1bYDxwwiH6j5h1ydKj5Gdny2VQoA0bkzK?usp=sharing)

Steps for cleaning models:
1) Import .obj model into Blender
2) Rotate model (and base if necessary) into upright position.
3) Scale the model using the model's base as a guide to match with the gridlines (see my measurements below).
4) If there is more than one figure in the model, change to the Z direction. Go to Edit Model. Go to Wireframe view (Z). Select just a single figure. Hit (P) and Selection. This will make it into a separate model. Repeat for other figures.
5) Go to X or Y view
6) For each figure, go into Edit Model mode.
7) Press A to select the entire figure.
8 ) Left click on Knife and use the mouse to select Bisect.
9) Bisect the model at the bottom of the shoes to cut off the base. When the Bisect box comes up (after selecting where to bisect), check Fill and either Clear Inner or Clear Outer, whichever removes the base.
10) At this point, I'll usually go to Move and use the blue up/down arrow to move the bisected area down--making the feet slightly "taller". (Some figures have very thin feet.)
11) Right click on the figure's leg. Select ctrl-L, then ctrl-I, and then X and Vertices to remove any extraneous background or points.
12) Go back to Object Mode.
13) Repeat for all figures.

At this point, the models should be in decent shape. Sometimes I'll go into Edit mode and fix holes and "bridges" between parts that should not be connected. I'll also go to Sculpt Mode and use Fill, Crease, Grab, and (most importantly) Smooth to clean up the model. Smooth really helps to remove pits and spikes.

Then I save each figure as a separate .stl.

Let me know if you need any help/pointers or just need more details.

Yes, there are a lot of things I took for granted in my procedure. You'll need to do a Blender tutorial to learn your way around. But it will be worth it in the end--I've been using Blender all the time for many things. It's just incredible.

Yeah, I'm sort of getting the hang of it, though I have run into trouble with some sculpting tools not working exactly like I'd hoped they would. I also can't get the infill function to work for me. I've just gone ahead and printed Martial La Hire, Myrddin, Elaria the Pale, Command Courier, Van Nessing, and the Gorilla Troopers in their current state. I got the sizing as close as possible and the opening on the bottom of their feet turned into collumns of resin, which I just sanded off with my dremel. The little holes/divots on the gorillas I'll fill with green stuff for now.

Perhaps a video would help to see where all the options are for the process. I started on the Banshees of Durgeth Swamp and deleting the flat base was easy enough. Started removing some of the stray outer vertices and comparing with my own figures. It looks like most of the small holes though were caused by the translucency of the figures. Not sure how to fill those in properly as the fill sculpt tool did not accomplish this.

I haven't yet, I printed mine a few weeks back. I bought the translucent green as my first resin color specifically to print those minis. So they were my very first print. I use a Canon camera and a free photogrammetry program called 3DF Zephyr Free.

The two most important things to get a good scan are
1) good lighting
2) some kind of background

For the background, I use a Heroscape map of Valhalla, but magazine pictures work as well.

You'll need to take 40-50 pictures around the figure. A cell phone can be used, but I use a canon SLR camera and put it on fixed focus (with a deep depth of field). I also use a light box with a motorized turntable and a camera trigger so I can start the scan and come back in few minutes after it's done.

A computer with a good graphics card allows me to turn the pictures into models in a few hours.

Just a quick question on this thread: are some of the models proxies rather than outright scans because of copyright concerns, or just because of lack of access to the technology to do scans of them? I can help with scanning, but just not sure why it was done for some figures and not others.

We don't have scans of some figures because I don't have access to those figures yet to scan.

As White Knight said, we need the scans done on any and all figures who haven't been done. Copyright isn't the issue, we just haven't gotten those figures scanned. So if you have the ability to scan anything that hasn't gotten a real scan than we'd be endlessly thankful. I'm still trying to figure out the process of making files myself. Okay. Interesting. I have a variety of C3V/SoV figures; not all of them, but a lot. I also know someone who has pretty much everything so if I can develop a method of scanning reliably, I can borrow figures as necessary to get scans going for every figure. There's plenty of VC figures I want to 3D print; ideally I'd never have to buy minis again now that I have a 3D printer, but I definitely don't want to buy $20 minis anymore. Let me explore and see what I can do. I have no experience and my computer isn't very powerful, but I do have a camera and a functional computer. :)

As White Knight mentioned, I’ll be sending him most of the remaining figures hopefully. I’m getting together everything but a handful of rare hard to finds at the moment. But any other scans done in the meantime will help cut down on what needs to be done of course.

Kon tar na, Microcorp Troopers, Quorik Warwitch, Red Mantis Blade dancers,
Tomb skeletons and the Varja

The Index (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=59608) thread is up. It's impressive how much work has been done already. All credit to the guys who post the files, all I did was post a list. I wanted everyone to see all the hard work you all are doing.

Great work!
As for a few proxies, Clawfoot Interceptor and Red Mantis for example which are modeled more closely. When the time comes for replacing links, perhaps they might be nice to include somewhere in the index for their high resolution having been made in software.

And I personally quite enjoy the Red ants proxies and think the Xualtiaca ant proxies looks better.

Would it be beneficial if I made an index of 3D files so people don't have to go looking through this long thread or searching thingiverse? It would need to be a new thread. Files with proxy files would be labeled as such and linked to aswell.

That sounds like a great idea and I believe it is time.

The only thing with the Red Mantis Blade Dancer proxies is they print best with FDM printers. We learned this when I started to print mine. My printer is a resin printer, the Photon Mono by Anycubic, and the minis were designed originally by someone who was printing them on an FDM printer. The swords were thin enough that the resin made the swords very, very thin and flimsy. I ended up having to drip super-glue over the length of the swords on both sides to thicken them up and make them rigid.

I had the same issue with the proxies for the Honor Guard of the Blasted Lands. Just removing the figures from the print bed could snap the weapons they were holding in half. The final figure I needed from them was one of the ones holding the arced lance vertically. I swear I printed is 6 or 7 times before I managed to get it printed correctly.

The best advice I can give if you are printing these figures on a resin printer is to upscale them by about 0.15%. The size difference is barely noticeable and the thickness added to their weapons will make your life easier. You should take into account I already was having to scale them down to 3.94% of their original size to fit on my print bed because my software (Prusa-Slicer) used millimeters instead of inches.

That’s right, I forget about running into these issues. Funny enough, I ran into the opposite problem. With the Pla ants, most of the legs didn’t print well, antennae broke easy and couldn’t for the life of me print anything thin like the swords and handles. Resin prints have given me 99% success with few errors being from lack of support in some spot. I have yet to figure out how to consistently print resin bases without warp. Especially the large bases are nice to FDM print saving also cost of resin.

So with bases I print them standing vertically with supports lining the bottom edges. Doing this I have been able to print double space bases pretty successfully. I just got a full size professional vinyl cutter/plotter at a garage sale for free a couple weeks back. It was free because it is missing a couple parts. Once I get it fixed I will be able to print and cut the stickers for double space bases. No one I know of has been able to make real stickers for double spacers yet so I'm hoping to be able to provide pre-cut stickers for double space bases that I have 3D printed. In the past the stickers provided have been non stick ones you had to glue down yourself. I just gotta get this thing running again. The cutter I found is the US Cutter MH 871-MK2.

I had no idea such machine exists. I print out single and double, cut them out with scissors and dab paint on the sides to hide the white edge. Iíve tried the vertical printing with decent success, but when doing 10-15+ at a time, usually a lot of them have a slight warped hung edge on the opposite side of the supports making them not perfectly round. And also have to sand away support bumps, which isnít actually much issue once paints added.

In making the proxy models I've more thought through matching size of originals than anything else. D&D and Star Wars miniatures tend to be a bit smaller and thinner so matching that was important to me. Printing them on my FDM is all I have to test prints right now but I get what you're saying about resin. Thickening up the models in specific places wouldn't be too hard to do via Blender which is what I would recommend.

I think I saw that, I might go ahead and just print the 5 of that Blade Dancer I'm gonna need and get it painted for now and use proxies for the other two from the squad. They're a great unit and getting one of the models printed/painted and out of the way will save me some time later. Or was that scan one of the early scans we couldn't use?

Tmac, White Knight and I are working on putting out the rest of the C3V models. If there are any figures anyone would like done sooner, just post them here and we will put it in our priority queue. If anyone is interested in helping speed things up cleaning models, message one of us and we can add you to our Discord group. WK has a tutorial video on cleaning them in Blender.

Is there a master list of these files? I know on the thread for the .stls of the official units they're all linked on the first post but that's not the case here.

I can scroll through the whole thread to find each unit but a master list would be nice.
