Saturday and Sunday I got to spend some time with Craig at the Hasbro booth and I have to say that he is a great guy and loves games. He really likes Heroscape and signed cards for my kids...

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/Doc_Savage/comic-con%202006/DSC03151.jpg

I did ask regarding Saylid summoning a carrier and Craig said that the use of the word move was unintentional and said that the word placed more accurately reflects the intention. He could understand why people might think that a carrier could bring along a figure, but that this would not be correct. He said he would try to remember to get the change to "place" into the official FAQ.

Craig said that the game was very healthy and indeed selling well. I asked if wave 5 was the last one and he assured me that there was much more to come.

Craig also said that wave 5 contained 2 packs of Uniques. The Gladiators are Unique Heros and the Agents are a unique Squad. The samurai and ninja are also Unique Squads. The groupings in the pictures reflect the distribution in the packs. I don't know the real names that will be on the cards and didn't look at the back of the packs! DOH!!!!!

The Agents (Unique Squad) are packed with the Gladiators (Unique Heroes). All my Gladiator pics are blurry due to shooting through glass...
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/Doc_Savage/comic-con%202006/DSC03142.jpg

The Soulborgs are packed with the big soulborg dogs (Common Squads)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/Doc_Savage/comic-con%202006/DSC03145.jpg

The Amazons are packed with the little robodogs (Common Squads)
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/Doc_Savage/comic-con%202006/DSC03146.jpg

The samurai are packed with the ninja (Unique Squads). There is one ninja chick, making this expansion having 7 female figs and adding greatly to the number of females.

The castles really are quite nice. Some of you out there will probably want to paint a wash on the wall pieces. Everything is modular and quite flexible. I didn't take pics of the rules as Craig told me Oogie did and they are quite long. Craig said THE CASTLES SHOULD BE IN STORES IN 2 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some fan reading the rules...

They announced Marvel at Comic-Con, but were saving a big Heroscape announcement for GenCon.

The Marvel set was big news and looks good. Craig said that the figures are all Unique Heroes and all are point balanced to be mixed with regular heroscape. I asked if the Hulk was like 2000 points. He laughed and was hesitant to say... I fished with 200-300 and it felt like they were somewhere in that range. I also asked if they were just knocked out (like heroclix) he laughed and said they get destroyed; they wanted to keep the same language with both games.

Captain America
Red Skull
Silver Surfer
Thanos
Hulk
Abomination
Spiderman
Venom
Iron Man
Dr. Doom

If it sells well, there would be more.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f60/Doc_Savage/comic-con%202006/DSC03137.jpg

Craig said that the Marvel set would be a smaller starter set and that the exact contents were not yet determined. Smaller due to licensing costs. The terrain is breakaway and there will be 10 figures.

Saturday I got to spend some time with Craig at the Hasbro booth and I have to say that he is a great guy and loves games. He really likes Heroscape and signed cards for my kids...Everytime I hear testimonials like this about Craig, I am always reassured about the game of HS.

That's great that he keeps the importance on kids' (and adults') enjoyment of the game.

He sounds like a great guy to chat with.

Great report, Doc. Especially considering none of your info is redundant to what Skulls and Oog have posted (with the exception of the Marvel characters to be included in the Marvel set).

Can't wait to check out your pics. And I also can't wait to hear what the BIG GenCon news is!

GAH! We finally have castle rules, and already I'm distracted by the mystery that is the GenCon news. Oh well, two more weeks and all will be revealed...

Doc thanks for sharing the information. Craig does indeed seem like a very nice guy. I can't wait to see closer images of Wave 5. I hope the official site will have stats and abilities up soon to coincide with the images the fans will soon have access to.

Can't wait to check out your pics. And I also can't wait to hear what the BIG GenCon news is!

Enemy castle? Marro hive? Seige weapons.
Personally, I'm hoping for seige weapons! With the release of the castles, a seige set seems like a very logical next step. This would also help to even the playing field when it comes to units on top of the ramparts firing down at helpless units below.

"Fall back men. Let the ballista handle some of those archers!"

And seige towers? Oh man... that would be awesome! :D

That said, what ever the big news is, I'm sure the majority of us will be amazed...

HAH! Finally, we get verficiation on the carry rules. Again, common sense. Thanks for the update! I guess I will have some more $$$ to blow on the game for the foreseeable future.....

The revelation about 2 unique sets in Wave 5 really puzzles me. While it will save me $$$, I'm surprised that Hasbro took this route knowing that fewer sets will be sold. OR, is it the opposite? Heroes may very well outsell squads.....mmmmmmm

Looking forward to the photos!!!

Craig also said that wave 5 contained 2 packs of Uniques The Gladiators are Unique Heros and the Agents are a unique Squad. The samurai and ninja are also Unique Squads. The groupings in the pictures reflect the distribution in the packs.

So to confirm...

Wave Five is

3-figure Ninjas and 3-figure Samurai...unique, both for Einar (according to allskulls), Samurai have counterstrike and some sort of move and attack bonus (allskulls), ninjas can dissappear somehow (allskulls)

4-figure Soulborg Rat Things and 3-figure double-based Wolves...common, rats for Utgar and they have diesngage and some sort of dodge ability (according to allskulls)

3-figure Female Agents and 3 different Gladiator Heroes....unique.

4-figure Blastatrons and 3-figure Warriors...common, Blastatrons for Vydar (according to Gladiatron bio), Warriors for Ullar (according to allskulls)

Please please please tell me you saw the package back too and that you thought to write down the info?

There is some confusion over packing....ninjas and samurai are together, we know. Agents and glads are together, we know. Allskulls says that the Ullar warriors were with the rats, but your post seems like you say the wolves are with the rats.....which is it?

I love the fact that the ninja/samarai "army" is expanding as uniques only, squads included. That makes playing them fun...going up against swarms of commons.

I love the quality of the pics. Very nice. You made me want to go next year.

I have to agree...great post/report without being redundant. Great Report.

Wait, stop! Wave 5 is packaged with snow terrain?
I suppose plain white spaces are cost attractive to produce than painted hexes.

I'm hoping the Cyberwolves are listed as 'soulborgs' and that they're the answer to the Wulsinu plague nightmare!

Great Great pictures, Doc! THANK YOU for sharing them!

Yeah, I'm not down with dressing kids up as characters from a splatter-gore horror film meant strictly for adults. And so help me, if they come up with little Jigsaw plush toys...!!

Seeing Craig's comment about the 'two-weeks", I think it's safe to assume that castles will be available for purchase at GenCon Indy. And I think it's safe to say that I am ridiculously jealous of all attending who will have them in their grubby little hands first!! Heh heh...

Craig said that "the shelf" was an accident, that they didn't mean to reveal wave 5 then... He didn't elaborate on who, how, why..... He also compared that to when the names of future figures for wave 4 were in an online poll.

Craig was also surprised that wave 5 wasn't on the official site.... I suspect they will be soon.

He also indicated that there will be fewer new army types in the near future and that the existing army types will be getting filled in.

Yep, kids really do love this game. My son is a cub scout and they had a day where the kids showed their collections and Doc Jr. showed Heroscape and within a week 2 of the other boys got the game. I think we way underestimate the number of 7-12 boys who are playing this game.

I don't know if the snow comes in the packs or not. I'm too much of a doof to have checked.

Don't feel bad. Your pics and info are great! Awesome work! I am however laughing my ass off at how funny it is that at least three hardcore 'scapers went to comic-con, some of them for more than one day, and not a single one thought to (A) take pics of the back of the Wave Five packaging or (B) look at the back and write down the info or (C) look at the backs and remember the info. Remember back during toyfair, how so many 'scapers thought it was crappy how no-one got good pics of the shelf and we all sort of chalked it up to "Oh, there were no 'scapers amongst the press." and so on? Well this time there were 'scapers amongst the "press" and they were within arm's length of the product and talking distance of it's design team and we still didn't get the info! :-) I'm getting more amusement out of that than I think I would get out of the actual info. :-P

Craig said the castles will be in stores in 2 weeks.........

2 weeks? Wow...maybe I won't have to order online after all. I hope he meant brick-and-mortar stores and not just online stores.

Given the history of this game though, he's probably wrong, even if he is Craig.

I think you're right. Back in Cali, my wife and I used to watch a group of three boys whenever their folks went out of town. I introduced them to the game and they were immediately hooked! My wife and I bought them a Master set and OR for Christmas, and they've since purchased every set they could find locally.

I can see how difficult it is for marketing and the game designers to come up with a happy medium trying to cater to both the young and older crowd who enjoy the game. With the budget they're given, they obviously need to go after the larger demographic who is interested in the game. Something we, as the elder fans of the game, need to accept at this point.

More thoughts....

Any idea what the other two package paintings were? I'm a big fan of the artwork for this game, and like using it on the boxes and otherwise ugly plastic bins I keep the game in.

Looks like a ninja and an amazon girl made the cut this time....who were the other two?
---

I find it interesting, but strange, that snow is the terrain choice. I like it, but it seems like the package will have to contain rules explaining what to do with it. Unless it just says to go online for the rules? Which would probably frustrate some folks, especially kids that aren't allowed to use the 'net.

---

Is it just me, or have the sculpts really improved since Toyfair? I know the toyfair photo was crappy and blown up a lot, but some of these figures look drastically different to me. Anyone else think that? Could it just be improved paint jobs?

---

Is that one gladiator with the trident and net orange, or is he supposed to be a lighter-skinned black guy? Some other race? Seems like an odd color. Is he wearing some sort of orange clothes?

---

There's no way those are amadillos...sorry Texas!

---

Wolves look frickin' awesome....my favorite sculpts based on the photos.

----

Charlie's Angels Agents look pretty good, not like they did on the shelf. Damn that girl's got one hell of an afro.

---

That one Amazonish sort of warrior looks so different from the other two. I wonder is she was originally intended to be a hero and the idea was scrapped? It looks like she's got a crown and cape and everything.

---

More samurai and now ninjas are always good.

---

I can't believe they were painting up children to look like R-rated movie characters......that's....just weird.....weird.

---

I love the comment about filling in existing armies. I've been itching to see them revisit Orcs especially....Wooly Mammoths, Pteranodons, etc. Maybe a mounted Samurai warlord? More Elves? That big Marro creature? Ranged Vipers? Kyrie squads for Einar/Vydar/Ullar? Kyrie Warriors for Vydar and Einar? Another Utgar Kyrie for the Minions? Another Ullar Warlord for the Armocs? The list goes on and on.....

---

Congrats on making about.com! I had a hunch that guy was keeping up with goings-on over here. Is he still a member? Anyone know? Eric was on the boards briefly after we got the shelf pics back at HQ.

A few of the figs do look different from the shelf. Particularly that one ninja that had the weird pose looks better now (or maybe it is just the angle).

Both the wolves and rats look better than what I could see on the shelf pic.

She just looks so serious about the rules and her event badge and lanyard. And then you have the kids in the background playing, along with the other visual ambience of the convention. Just a cool shot.

That is a nice shot...cute content, interesting background and everything. Good photo. Am I the only one that pictures that little girl as being the type who's about to say "But DAAAAAAD, the rules say you can't do that! I looked it up, and I'll tell mom you're cheating!" :-P

I hope they include snow tiles in wave 5. I wanted more, but didn't want anymore glaciers, ice or dzu-teh. I'm not getting my hopes up though, something tells me those were just demo packages.

There's no way those are amadillos...sorry Texas!

Bah. The coolness that is the name "Warmadillos" shall NEVER die!

An orc mounted on a Pteranodon would be just freakin' awesome.

OK, my 1st post in this thread was really complimentary of Craig, so here's one that's not so much so:Craig was also surprised that wave 5 wasn't on the official site.... I suspect they will be soon.It frankly disturbs me that the designer of the game can't find it in his life to take 5 minutes every couple a weeks to look at the official website for the game.

I like this wave too. Heck there really hasn't been a Wave I haven't enjoy based on looks. Wave 4 is probably my least favorite for squads sculpts ( Gladiatrons, Armocs, and Sacred Band - eh, so-so).

There is a definite feel to this wave - dark, not so valiant figures all around. Well the Tighty Whiteys might be for Jandar, but everything else is in a gritty, delightfully dismal color tone.
Dark blues, blacks, golds - and what is up with that red gladiator? Is that Taelord in the pit?!?

I'm very keen on getting the stats and abilities. Hurry up, official site!!!

Thanks so much for for the report Doc. I think all the scuplts and colors are great. And I love the two-sword samuri figure. This is going to be a great wave.

I really liked the Marvel figures. I would really love to demo this at GenCon.That's wishfull thinking I'm sure.

Thanks again Doc.

You read my mind with this post, reap.

No way Craig didn't know the official site doesn't have the W5 stats up yet. As a designer attending a Con where he can hook lots of new players, it's in his best interest to know what's on the official site so he can direct to it those that are interested.

The fact that the boosters were unopened and behind glass suggests that W5 details are not intended to be revealed until GenCon. And Craig was aiming to keep it that way with his--fake--surprise reaction (whether by his choice or by the directive of others).

Just my view on this one little comment of his.

Just so this isn't a total doom and gloom post, let me finish with this:
I think I'm in agreement with most everyone when I say Craig certainly is a great resource for this community (when someone can corner him, that is).

Actually, Craig probably gets updates about what goes on the site from marketing or whatever. He might have better things to do with his time than check to see if the web guys are meeting the dates that the marketing people give him.

He's red like that so you can have this scenario:

Player 1: (slams freaky red gladiator down on the map)

Player 2: Dude, why's that guy all crazy red and ****?

Player 1: He's red....WITH YOUR BLOOD FOOL! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Player 2: WTF is wrong with you?

Player 1: I'm crazy....WITH KILLING RAGE....FOR YOU! MWHAHAHAHAHAHA

Player 2: (leaves room)

Or not.

She just looks so serious about the rules and her event badge and lanyard. And then you have the kids in the background playing, along with the other visual ambience of the convention. Just a cool shot.I love that image too. Hope she ends up playing the game. And with focus like that, she'll be able to come here and tell all you rules lawyers exactly how to play this game! GIRL POWER!!!

He also indicated that there will be fewer new army types in the near future and that the existing army types will be getting filled in.Poor Craig, I can just see the marketing group looking at promo stuff in their office. "Ok, yeah, hey, box up all these things and setup the display at Toyfair. Who cares if they're ready, they look cool." *erk.* As for the checking the website thing, well, I know that the game designers are assigned multiple projects, like 6, at any given time. I could see how a month or more could go by without checking a website. Happens to me all the time with my work site. There are departments that are supposed to let me know when information needs replacing and updating, and then I come across forms that expired a month ago. I always feel like crap when that happens, as if I'm the only person that cares.
It will be nice to have some of the types fleshed out a little more. It is easy to make an orc army or a marro army. It looks like we'll get some soulborg groups in wave 5, and a few more of the historic/fantasy army types. I like that a lot. Some of the releases were feeling a little random and it is good to hear they are pulling it together.

2 weeks? Wow...maybe I won't have to order online after all. I hope he meant brick-and-mortar stores and not just online stores.

Given the history of this game though, he's probably wrong, even if he is Craig.Hee hee hee, yeah, there have been times that the designers have been out of the loop on product arriving in stores.

I'm a big fan of the artwork for this game, and like using it on the boxes and otherwise ugly plastic bins I keep the game in.
---
I find it interesting, but strange, that snow is the terrain choice. I like it, but it seems like the package will have to contain rules explaining what to do with it.
---
There's no way those are amadillos...sorry Texas!I've kept the inserts from the boosters and some of the packaging for this reason. When we were told that Lindsay is the graphics girl, I'm curious what that means, if she is the sketch artist, or the layout/arrangement person. I'm also impressed at the number of people they had at comic-con. I hope that they are all able to make it to GenCon

Snow only has special rules if it is heavy snow, otherwise the movement is normal. The rules would be found in scenarios that people could download.

There is possibility. At Comic-Con, Craig (the designer) was surprised to hear that Wave 5 wasn't yet posted on .COM. So hopefully those names and stats will be posted before GC. How far before, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, in fact they were revealed, if you were able to see the packages out of the glass. They weren't a secret it seems. Those are the actual packages, and allskulls saw the backs of a couple of them. Allskulls is the only one of us that saw the names of any of Wave Five.

Actually, I would love the names of the guys in each pack because Sandra (housemouse) and Nick (Funagain) could make little "buy an individual booster" for each of the four instead of having to sell you an entire set. It's hards for them to set up selling pages without information.

This the about the best we can do right now:

Gladiators/Agents – Unique – 3 FoxForce5 girls and 3 gladiators, probably each unique heroes instead of a unique squad.
Samurai/Ninja – Unique – 3 charging (+3 MOVE when attacking?) samurai and 3 ninja
Warriors/Soulborgs – Common – 3 amazons and 4 small robot dogs/foxes/armadillos who can dodge and run 4 spaces when attacked
Soulborgs – Common – 4 shooting soulborgs (probably Blastatrons) and 3 large dogs

See how sad Nick's page looks with no information?

C'mon Allskulls, there's no pressure at all!
