Another month has trundled by. I have the distinct impression that these blogs aren't getting seen, which is understandable given the confusing state of blogs in general. Hopefully the admins will have some time to devote to the issue at some point in the future. Regardless, writing continues, so on with the update!
Fan Fiction
Fan fiction remains a possibility, though at the moment no work is being done on it. There are several stories and characters I could explore, but as always, my interest fluctuates between fan fiction and novels. Right now it's on novels, so fan fiction has been left untouched for several weeks. This could change, or it could remain the case for a good while. It's impossible to tell.
Novels
So, while interest has been on the novels, has there been any actual progress? Some. Yesterday I was able to nail down the personal stakes for the hero, which is a big step forwards. That will allow me to better know who the character is. The other big roadblock I would like to overcome is that of the magic system.
Over the past months, I have repeatedly refined, changed, or completely rebuilt the magic system. It seems like I've gone through at least ten different iterations of what it could be. Normally, picking a magic system would be fairly straightforward. However, these novels revolve around the magic directly, and thus the system needs to be perfect. I have a list of what I need, and I've come close to checking off that list several times, but there always seems to be something missing.
However, I feel confident that I will eventually find the right magic system. Doing so will enable me to construct the world around it, which will give me a better idea of the setting for the story. Once that is in place, then progress should be quick.
The Future
Right now, the only future plan remains as 'write the first novel'. At my current rate of progress, I have zero idea on when (or even if) that will happen. Interest could shift away completely and return to fan fiction. Or I could become distracted by something else. Or, of course, I could finally find the right magic system, and the outline could be written within a month. It's impossible to tell.
Is there anything in the realm of writing you the readers can expect to see soon? Possibly. I intend to remain active in the fan fiction competition, though my time obviously remains limited. If I get an idea for one of the 'TGRF challenge' stories, I could write that as well. But at the moment, nothing is in the works.
Hopefully I will soon find the right magic system, and the novels will be on their way.
