Well another month has come and gone, and there have been DEVELOPMENTS. So without further ado, let's get to the updates.
Novels
Work on my series of novels continues. However, it has been progressively getting slower and slower, to the point where I found myself unable to progress through simple questions and details. At first I assumed that was just a lack of interest, or perhaps some form of burnout. Now I believe it was because my head needed to be elsewhere.
Before I got my job, I had been focused on novels as 'the thing' which I could do to support myself in the long run. Publish a few bestsellers, start an online writing academy of sorts - I'd be set. That's still my plan. But I had to take a step back and realize that now that I have my new dental assistant job, that pressure is off. I still want - and plan - to go down that writing path. But I don't need to be focusing on it to the exclusion of all else.
What does that means for novels? Surprisingly, probably very little. Progress has been so slow of late, that not much will change. I will keep chipping away at them when I have time/interest, and eventually they will get done. I have no timeframe on that. Sometime in the not-so-distant future.
Fan Fiction
So if I'm dialing down work on my novels, what's taking their place? You'll be happy to know that I've decided to return to fan fiction. I know, I know. Another of TGRF's 'no, this is what's happening' moments. I can't discount that from being the case, but I've given this decision a few days before writing this blog entry, and it feels right. So what exactly does this 'return' entail?
For some time now, my interest has been fixated on Valhalla, and specifically a retelling of the war in as complete a fashion as I can manage. I know bits and pieces of how the war goes after the events of DoD. I know some of the major battlefields, and I have my own ideas of what the factions are like. Honestly there's a lot I could explore, and the endless opportunity has been sparking my interest for awhile. Thus, that is what I would like to write: a follow-up to DoD, chronicling the continuation, and possibly end, of the war. This would likely be a collection of several stories.
What would that look like? After some deliberation, Taelord likely would not be present. He may make the occasional appearance, but the stories would center on other characters. I'd like to tell the Imperial side of the tale, and there are plenty of other factions and stories to explore which don't involve Taelord. I do have a plan for Taelord, but it involves the end of the war, and might be scrapped by the time (if) I get there.
My main question is if you, the readers, would be interested in such tales. I would be stepping away from Taelord and exploring other characters and events. The war would progress steadily, with things picking up pretty soon after the epilogue in DoD. Successive stories would have months to years between them. Some key things I'm interested in shaping stories around are (don't hold me to this): Vydar's betrayal, the Ticalla exploration, the Marro, the vampires, and the orcs. The soulborgs are oddly absent from my plans at the moment, but I'm sure that, given my track record, they'll find their way in. Main characters such as Utgar and Runa would also get mentions, occasional appearances, and possibly a few limited PoV scenes depending on the story. They, along with Taelord, would likely be featured if I find myself out of ideas and ready to end the war.
Is this a collection of stories which would interest you?
The Future
So where does that leave any future plans? Right now, the plan is to continue plugging away at my novels, developing steadily. I'd like to return to fan fiction in some fashion - interest is definitely centered on the Valhalla war right now. Honestly, there isn't much else in the writing department in the works.
Let me know if you're interested in reading a retelling of the Valhalla Wars. I'm certainly interested in writing one.
Until then, keep reading, and I'll see you next month.
