Heroscape's not nerdy enough...

I got scoffed out of a Comic Book store yesterday asking about Heroscape. I was looking at all of the Warhammer40K stuff (new to me) and thinking how cool that must be but also how incredibly time-consuming it must be to play that game. Anyway, the clerk asked me if I needed anything and I asked if he carried Heroscape. He gave me this "look" and said, "Oh no!" It was like I was in a fancy French restaurant and asked for Kraft singles on my Foie Gras. Anyone else have this experience? Can you say anything or are you doomed to leaving in shame for your lack of nerdulence?

If you were a true nerd you would have asked if they carried every warhammer 40k piece ever made along with mint condition D&D books or something along those lines....n00b.

All is not lost. Even the Compleat Strategist (a well-known chain of gaming stores in the NYC area that always carried Avalon Hill and other "elitest" wargames) advertises 'Scape.

I find the best remedy is to take all my 'scape stuff into the store and, with the owner's o.k., to set up a demo in the gamming section. After building a couple maps and setting out all the figures/cards, I crack open a soda and explain the game to the owner and people that come around. Luckily it is so easy that a total explination takes all of 5 minutes, tops. Once we have about 6-8 people we play a few games.

This usually ends with 4 or 5 converts and a disgruntled store owner complaining about how he can't get 'scape at his store for a reasonable price.

I haven't used this little trick since wave 6 'cause I've been out of country. But I do know that at my local store the owner is doing his best to get Marvelscape now, and hopes to run some tournaments with it.

If they don't beat you, make 'em join ya, I say.

There are "enlightened" game stores in our area, too.

No offense intended, but I don't know if you were emphasizing "elitist" or correcting my spelling, but the correct spelling is with two "i"s.

elitist

Sure, you could say "Oh, I thought this was a quality game store, like Kmart" That should get some humor at the minimum, and anger if you're lucky.

There is a couple around here that are MTG and WH 40K and they don't even acknowledge you if you don't spend copious amounts. A comic store here sells Dreamblade, D&D and Clix that wont get into heroscape, but are watching the Marvelscape game and might sell it along with having tournaments if there is a big enough turn out. That comic book store has some of the nicest employees.

I hate feeling like a jumbo jack when going into some of these stores. I don't know how you felt Mooch, but I've felt angry many times at some of these game stores. "My Ben Franklin isn't as pretty as their Ben Franklin?" I just never go back.

I always think It's funny to judge people's reactions when I break down and cry (on purpose that is). Next time they say no, just start to wail and roll around on the floor while yelling WHY? WHY? At the very least, you'll have something to laugh about later.
