ChaosChild's Battlefields (Flying Fortress)
I am going to try my hand at making balanced battlefields but I thought I would start with this instead. This first one is just for fun.
(click on the pictures for a larger view) The fortress sits atop an inverted cone of sorts. The base of the cone is a 7-hex tile. The waterfall is there for looks and the road is to get to the castle (for those that have to walk). They are not needed to support the mountain. It is very solid and won't fall over unless you try to push it over. I used 9 master sets (not all of the 24-hex pieces though), 4 RttFF, 3 castles, and all of my figure expansion tiles from waves 1-4. I have not played on it yet. I'm not sure how well it will play considering there is only one route to the castle (unless you can fly). I do have two starting zones out in the desert area so maybe 2 players attacking 1 in the castle would work. Kumiko is not impressed with your sculpt, either.

That is the most amazing castle that I have seen yet.
Bravo! You know I'm gonna have to steal your idea, and make a floating castle of my own! |

WOW. I mean, really, WOW! This is absolutely impressive! I've had an infatuation with flying castles since I first saw a picture of one as a child! I never thought that they were possible with HS, I thought that it would crumple over and cause a huge mess...that is absolutely impressive! I must join the bandwagon and try my hand at this...this is RIGHT up my alley! Dude, congratulations on the creation of a sheer masterpiece! This is so cool it's going into my HeroScape screensaver of favorite maps... Did you happen to put this into VirtualScape?! I'm still having a hard time figureing out how you accomplished this. I'm mostly concerned with the base of the structure (of course). You said that you started off with a mere seven hex piece as the base, WOW! I'd be interested in knowing how you went up from there...I'm sure that you had to put some thought while constructing this marvelous monstrosity into the balance of the structure, were there ever any "oh my gosh, it's gonna fall!" moments? Any more details into the design would be greatly appreaciated, I think that you've opened up a whole new can of worms...I know that you've got my creative juices pumping... And P.S. I don't think I've ever seen so much sparklie water in one place before, there's even a huge stack of it left unused in the background of one shot...envious smiles are directed towards you, you lucky person you... |

As for the construction, I started with a 7-hex piece. Make sure that it is the lowest level because if you stack it on a 24-hex piece, you will bend it (24-hexers don't have any support under them). After a short stack of 7-hexers, I put six 3-hexers on, leaving the center empty. Placing a 1-hex tile in there will add stability but I was trying to conserve pieces and didn't have problems afterwards. Next layer is the important 7-hex piece in the center keeping the previous layer from falling. You just build up in that fashion with the top most layer keeping the previous layers edge pieces from falling. The easiest way to do this is to make it completely symmetrical, however, it won't look "natural" then. As long as you don't put to much on one side and not enough on the other, you shouldn't have any trouble with tipping. It is really quite stable after you get past the first couple layers. Quote:

You just made a 7 year-old boy and his 34 year-old dad drool. Seriously cool map, thanks for sharing it.
