ANY chance of WOTC turning Heroscape collectible?

I apologize if this has been discussed but I did not see any previous posts addressing this in detail. I have never played Heroscape, but after about a 10 year hiatus, I am looking to get back into gaming. One of the reasons I got burnt out on the hobby as a whole was the collectible aspect of everything that was coming out at the time (at least what was being played in my area). I have been thinking of getting Heroscape and have been lurking the forums, but now that it has come to my attention that Wizards of the Coast is taking over some aspects of distribution I am concerned. I have no interest in getting into Heroscape if it is going to go the collectible route at all. I am just curious if now is a good time to get into the game, or should I wait and see what direction they take it in? What do you all think?

If they want Heroscape to stop selling, then they will.

You should get this game whether it goes collectible or not. Everything released to this point creates an awesome game regardless of what happens in the future.

I guess I am also concerned with the way they handle Magic releases, where each "Wave" gets more powerful so you have to buy every new release just to have the game be balanced / fun / playable.

Wizards is just taking over Distribution not Production.

If you're speaking of the game becoming a collectible by HSl switching to a blind purchase format, you have nothing to worry about. Several times the designers have come out and said HeroScape will never go the route of blind purchase packaging. As a matter of fact, that is one of the major draws of the game: you always know what you're buying.

Aside from that, the game is only as collectible as you want it to be. There are a LOT of expansions out there at this point. However, you don't NEED to have them all in order to play a complete game. Yes, there are some sets that you're better off having than others. But even if you were to purchase the MS, you'll be fine for a month or so.

As far as expansions sets being discontinued, this has yet to happen. Hasbro CSR's have told us that there are no plans for discontinuations of sets. The current lack of Wave 3 (Jandar's Oath) is due to Hasbro production being focused on Wave 6 and MarvelScape. The Wave 3 set will eventually find its way back to stores and online retailers, as did Wave 1, and Wave 2.

This is a GREAT time to be getting into HeroScape. You've already got a great game and excellent expansion sets available, a superb community here at 'Scapers.com, and the much anticipated releases for 2007, which the designers have said will be amazing.

So don't fear the switch to WotC distribution. Many here feel this will be a good thing, as Hasbro is looking to further reach out to the "older gamer" market. Make one of your New Year's Resolutions the purchase of this game, and see just how great this system is.

To answer in a little better fashion than I did above.

They don't "intend" on making the game collectable. Hasbro in fact has went so far as to reproduce waves for all of us in the stores as well as on their website. So it is a constant flow of different figs for us at stores. I don't see them ever making the game collectable because it takes away it's charm.

get in now and enjoy it!

Considering this game uses squads and units, I don't see how that would even work. If the game went all hero it might work; but even then, for a collectible game to be successful, each set would have to have 40-60 minis (minimum) of varying rarity for it to make any kind of impression on the collectible minis market.

I've barely been a member of this site a week and I've seen this rumor mentioned numerous times. With so much out already, I have trouble accepting that they would do this. I see absolutely no benefit to them going that route and if they did, they would have to restart and rebuild the game from the ground up. I don't see that happening.

[EDIT] Wow. Five people posted while I was typing. I really need to learn to type faster.

It's your game, do what's fun for you. Any advice to the contrary should be ignored.

That also has not been the case to date. I think that so long as the current designers are calling the shots you are in good hands. They have made it very clear that they share your concerns.

That is a good point. The game mechanics support units, not so much an individual miniature. So it really wouldn't work anyway.
They could perhaps make some better packaging that would take up the same amount of space but with more product!! Then we would have more selections when we go in.

Guess I wasn't "in the know" enough to search the term "blind purchase" instead of "collectible, tradeable, booster, etc".
