GenCon 400 Point Army Discussion

I didn't see this as a specific topic so I'll start it here. Mods please feel free to merge, move, whatever this thread as you deem appropriate.

I trying to decide what 400 point army I would use at GenCon and I decided to try the following. I'm kinda a Vydar fan (anyone who read my Fan Fic will remember that. Man, I really need to dust that off.) So my thoughts were:

Army Core - Vydar Base: 270 Points

1 x MicroCorps Agents
1 x Gorrillanators
1 x Gladiatrons

This would form the base of the army. From there I decided to come up with several options

Option 1 - Orcs: 130 points
2 x Arrow Gruts
2 x Swog Riders

Option 2 - Vydar Heavy: 130 points
1 x Agent Carr
1 x Guilty McReech

Option 3 - Balance: 130 points
1 x Aubrien Archers
1 x Izumi Samurai

Option 4 - Hero Killer: 130 points
1 x Deadeye Dan
1 x Zettian Guards

Option 4 - Monks and Roaches: 130 points
1 x Shaolin Monks
1 x Marro Warriors

I have also picked a fair selection of my favorite armies to come up with other options, but those are the basics I'm starting with. I assume that in most of the tournies you keep the army you start with throughout the event. Correct?

Thoughts?

Also what other armies are people considering?

Oh thats a tough decision, i'd probably pick the monks and roaches option because of the cloning ability and the monks shaolin assault attack! and for some reason when i use the marro warriors they seem to do really well!

If I were you, I'd make sure I had more than just 1 of each common. If you loose just 1 figure out of a squad, that squad is considerably weaker for the remainder of the game, and you could loose turns if the squad is destroyed within the turn, something entirely possible. Having any less than 2 squads of any common is a BIG handicap.

I recommend you stick with a straight strategy with one 3x common set of squads, with possibly supporting heroes and range.

I think a really tough Vydar army would be:

Krav Maga=100
3x Mircro Corp Agents =300
------------
400

I think they would be tough as hell on the board. There's a whole lotta range and ability going on there....

Does any one know what map(s) they will be using at GenCon? Will we know before we get there?

Anyone have info on what the official games will be at gencon?
Point/Map/Scenario combos would be most appreciated
I thought Sandra posted some candidates at HQ, but I can't find it.

Anyway, I always draft for the map. That said, a nice army for maps like forsaken waters is Syvvaris, Grimnak, Tornak, Grutsx2

Maybe try Braxas and Nilfheim. Thats 395 points of pain they wont see coming

Or go WW2 style with AE, Drake, and Q9

Roman swarm style? Legionnairesx3, Marcus, Me-Burq-Sa, Syvvaris

X17, theracus, Venoc Warlord, 4x Vipers. Drop X17 like a bomb onto their ranged figures from Theracus, then let the Venocs do what they do best.

I'd be hesitant to go with high value squad figures in a blind matchup. Dan, Braxas, Sudema, and Me-Burq-Sa all do so well against them.

Oh boy. I think making armies is my favorite part of HS

Sudema is top notch in Heroscape: Legacy. Try out this alternative unit cost system at your next game day or tournament.

Like Ski said, having only one of a common squad is not a good thing. For 400 points I think I would go with the following:

Krav Maga Agents - 100
Microcorp Agents x2 - 200
Marro Warriors - 50
Me-Burq-Sa - 50

That's a lot of range for anyone to deal with, especially in a game with only 400 points.

Buddy Lee, I agree with the others that multiples on commons is the best way to go, but if limited to your options I would take #2. There are too many things out there that can kill commons and squads so you have to have a unique hero or two. I'm sure I could suggest a 100 different armies to you but in truth it depends upon what you have and how you play. Obviously you have picked what you have for a reason but if you are open to any suggestions let us know and you'll see this thread fill to overflowing.

These are all excellent points.

The "core" group evolved from my desire for a 2 Arrow Grut/Swog Rider combination and the fact that I reeeaally like the Micro Corps, and have found the Gladiatrons to be very effective in melee.

I'll give this some thought.

I also think I may have found an army I like better. After realizing that the Venoc Warlord helps the Aubrien Archers with their frency I think I like:

1 x Venoc Warlord
2 x Aubrien Archers
2 x Venoc Vipers
1 x Dead Eye Dan or 1 x Izumi Samurai.

( If I had 405 points I'd take the Armoc Vipers, but all that is 5 points to many.)

Thoughts?

Do you not have the EOV? I never play vipers without them they are awesome. If you don't have them maybe you can make a deal with ninthdoc, he has plenty I understand.

Oh, another thing to consider with the Venoc Warlord is Theracus. He's a scout and could place ol Deadeye at a secure elevated position.
