It's a cast from a mold of the "Isle of Lewis Chess Set" (12 Century). I placed the mold at an angle and only half poured the resin. Afterwards it was painted, glued to a hex base and flocked with rock and stones. I'm not sure if the mold is available anymore since I bought it a good 17 years ago. A quick Google search may find it if your interested in pursuing it. Hope that helps! (PS - I did make a complete chess set from my molds. It's a beautiful set.)

Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain

I looked at your website and found a rule for "Bloody Bodies." I tried to convert it to " when stepping on a bloody body roll an attack die, if you get a skull take a wound. Large and huge figures dont roll unless all spaces are on a dead body." I realized that wasn't fair to squads or dw 8-9000k. How should I change the rule.

These ancient, ruined columns work great on the battlefield and can be used in dungeon set ups as well.
I'm currently doing this. I've deviated from your instructions as follows:

1) I'm using cardstock for the base and top covers - sure, it's not the most durable, but I plan on using these as LOS blockers, and only flying characters can be placed on top. They will be stored in foam that will have depressions cut to fit them, so don't need to be durable whilst stored. Thoughts on this please.

2) instead of a modelling clay/ playdough like substance to wiegh the bases down, I'm gluing 3 x 10c piece (Australian 3x 10c piece fits in the base snugly, my columns look just like the tute columns but they're gold) to the internal base cardstock surface instead. I'm thinking of gluing a close fitting chunk of foam inside the column and gluing the top of the 3 x 10c pile to the bottom of this foam as well to decrease the likelyhood of the weight of the 10c pieces (which aren't that heavy, but still) pulling the cardstock off the base of the column. Thoughts on this please.

3) Painting - I've chosen Jet black and mid grey for this project. I MAY mix them and drybrush the mixture after I paint the lot (prime?) with Jet black and before I drybrush the mid grey. Thoughts on this please.

4) I'm wondering if I should rescore the columns a little after the paintjob to reveal slashes of hidden gold (the columns are shiny gold plastic all the way through), thoughts on the paintjob and rescoring please.

4) I have minute ground cover in my yard that I could wrap around the column and to scale it would look like vine with normal grape plant sized leaves. How do you attach a plant like this without ugly globs of glue, and how do you keep it looking alive (or at least in one piece)?

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

EDIT: I know I've directed this at the OP, but anyone is welcome to comment, or advise, I'm new to custom terrain.

Hey everyone, new project here. These are pictures from a Dark City Games scenario I ran at a local convention (Icon) over the weekend. The scenario is called "Void Station 57" and it takes place on a mysterious, battle wrecked space station.

The figures are all AT-43 miniatures. The playing board was drawn in Adobe Illustrator, printed out and mounted to heavy illustration board. I did this for each room of the station so I could simply place the room the characters were entering on the table quickly. The doors are from Space Hulk. The crates are from my local train hobby store and the other pieces of wrecked equipment are various electrical supplies glued together and painted. The main reactor core is a cardboard mailing tube with various things glued to it and painted grey. In the scenario the main task of the player characters is to turn on the main power. It's not an easy thing to accomplish and it goes on and off several times through the scenario. This was represented by the light in the top of the core. I was able to switch this light on and off.

Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already but McDonald's current Happy Meal toy (Nov. 2010) has a great toy for 'Scape.

The figure shown in the picture isn't worth much but it is pretty much the same scale as a 'Scape figure. That way you can see how big the red "globe" is. The red globe fits great on a 4 hex base. I'm planning on taking out the spinning mechanics, glue the three fins together (it spins apart), add some pipes (drinking straws) and spray paint it grey. A simple wash and it will look great. It's got some good surface detail that sort of shows up in this grainy picture. It could stand in for a lot of types of machines like radar equipment, power stations, etc.

I'll post pictures after I modify the five I bought.

Well I'm most of the way through with this. It's stalled a little. I'd still like opinions on 4), now that you are back with us, Grishnakh.
