Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain
I may have missed it but how do you flock the 24 hex pieces? I'm not sure if dipping them in the freezer bag is possable is it?(Haven't gotten any flock yet so haven't tried as of yet)

Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain
What I do is I either only put glue on sections, and then dip that one section in at a time, or I spill the flocking out into a box (I use the one FotAK came in) and just drop the tile into it.
It is I, Tandros Kreel! I am here to help! Guide, assist, uh, well at least let's not screw things up. . . in the TWILIGHT CAVE.. |

Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain
Or you could do it over newspaper and then pour the extra back in the bag.

Meanwhile here's some pics of a game of Legends of the Ancient World (Dark City Games) being played on the painted tiles out at I-Con this past weekend. This setup is of a tomb that is guarded by undead, skeletal warriors and an undead mage. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Grishnakh : April 7th, 2010 at 12:25 AM. Re: Grishnakh's Custom Terrain
I decided to paint my dungeon tiles to look more like the stone floor of a cave. We already have rock tiles as well as road tiles (which make great stone dungeon flooring). In my opinion these tiles should therefore resemble an old, spiderweb infested cave or tomb, so that's the look I'm going for. Besides, there are some who will like this and others who will not. It's all a matter of personal taste.
I used Mars Black and Titanium White Acrylic paint. Mars Black has blue in it, so that produces a cool stone color. There is also a little bit of Burnt Umber thrown in there in places to dirty it up a bit and make it look more like natural material. The sides of the tiles are washed with a thin mixture of Mars Black to give it a more broken up appearance. After that dries the tops are painted a dark grey. After that dries a series of lighter grey dry brushing is done to bring out the stone texture. The last step is to use an old toothbrush and thin, ink consistency paint to flip in some dark and then some lighter spots to represent small stones. I've considered glueing on some small piles of rocks here and there to break up the "hex" look and to add in a little more detail. This would be similar to my rock hexes outlined earlier in this thread, just in smaller rubble piles. All of my other "props" (columns, doorways, rubble, etc.) are painted with this same color combination. That's why they look like they belong and fit into any layout that I create. This is important to achieve an overall "look". I probably won't post a more detailed step by step on this, what I've just spelled out should be sufficient for anyone who wants to attempt something similar. Others have painted tiles before so I know there are plenty of tutorials out there. It's fairly simple and really, it comes right down to your skill as a painter anyway, something a tutorial would not be able to cover. Hope that helps! I'll try to put up some more detailed photos soon. It looks like at least one of your ruins is from the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic Ruins pack. Did you re-paint them? Or is that the color that they came in? Last edited by SgtHulka : April 7th, 2010 at 12:54 PM. |
