Also, Just because an entry is different, that doesn't make it better. For instance, there are several "Lesser Fire Elementals" cards, and only one "Lava Flickers". That doesn't mean it's Better.

It is difficult to get a feel for how this unit plays by simply reading the powers. The combination of Wildfire and Spreading Fires have major implications to how the unit plays. Instead of moving normally, Wildfire Embers usually spread using Spreading Fires, whether zipping across the map as a line of flames or surrounding and enveloping enemy units. The effect is that they play less like individual figures and more like a living brush fire. As figures are moved from the starting zone to the front lines, it is like the fire "burns out" in the back while spreading elsewhere.

With the ability to activate 6 figures per turn, they move around the map incredibly fast, faster even than Vipers, and can assault their opponent's starting zone after only few turns. While they struggle against most melee armies, especially ones that can get five or more attacks per order marker, they excel against range units due to their speed and ability to effectively ignore screening units. They are especially effective against unique range units like the Krav Maga Agents, who quickly find themselves surrounded by flames. In playtests the Wildfire Embers were even able to overwhelm the 4th Mass.

Note that while the Wildfire Embers do not have a power that makes them weaker on water tiles, the unit does have a grave weakness to water: Spreading Fires does not work on water spaces. The Wildfire Embers rely on Spreading Fires to quickly move around the map and surround opponents' figures; water (and swamp water) tiles can severely hamper or even halt that movement.

I'm having trouble envisioning how Spreading Flame will play out. But seems overpowered, I think. Every time you activate one, it has a 40% chance of either inflicting a wound (and dying itself) or bringing back one from the dead? Man.

Strikes me as pretty balanced and straight-forward. Nice interaction with the FEs.

I like that they synergize not with the expected FEs, but with the AEs. Seems like an interesting and fun mechanic. Perhaps a tad cheap?

I'm not sure whether every Ember Sprite that foregoes moving/attacking gets to roll the D20, or whether the entire squad collectively has to forego moving/attacking for a single roll of the D20.

I'm having trouble theory-scaping these guys.... So one could take his normal move of 3, then a second could 'teleport' next to him, then a third could 'teleport' next to the first or second, and so forth. They'd tend to move in clumps of spreading fire, which seems really thematic, and their move of 3 would keep their sweep in check somewhat. But whether their movement flexibility, and their ability to move/attack with six, is sufficiently countered by their low defense or not, I can't tell.

I like the concept on this entry, but I wonder how Wildfire works with Kurrok. With Kurrok, you can take a turn with up to 3 small elementals. I guess that means you move and attack with only one Wildfire Ember, but, on the other hand, when you take a turn with a Wildfire Ember you can also use the Wildfire special ability...

I think it needs clarification on the card.

Because it is an ember and not a elemental, Kurrok has nothing to do with them.

You know, since their race is not "Elemental" but "Ember", I don't think Kurrok can activate them. Looks as if the designer anticipated that problem.

Actually, I think they should not be Elementals due to Kurrok. See this post in the original thread for my reasoning.

Agreed that making them explicitly not Elementals solves potential problems with Kurrok.

But I think that, given the very name of the contest itself, many of us (including myself) assumed that it was expected that these be Elementals.

IMO, best customs are in this thread and wish I could vote multiple in here over ones in other polls.
1 - I really like the spreading flame combo of searing intensity and resurrection. 65 points for 3/3 squad with this power seems balanced too, but maybe a little to good for its points.
2 - Seems balanced, but I just peronally don't think firestorm needs more help, but gotta admit it is very thematic.
3 - I much prefere to give AE more help and overall like the powers, but 30 might be a tad too cheap.
4 - Seems balanced as well, including resurrection power but, like entry 1, after playing might be slightly to good for its points.
5 - Most unique powers, really like the horde move in the last two powers. 6 attack of 2 with no defense is hard to theoryscape as the closest units are zombies, but they have 2 defense and resurrection while this has 6 attack. Points are an enigma for these ones without serious playtesting.
