Discussion with Friend about future prices

Hi all!

So i finally have all 3 heroscape master sets and am having a great time. But, I have not opened swarm of the marro yet. My friend and I were discussing the future selling prices of master sets that are New in box.

What are your guy's takes/experience regarding the resale value of unopened, unused, brand new master sets, such as swarm of marro and D&D. I have searched on this forum, but nothing really came up for unopened brand new master sets like sotm and d and d.

Would those prices skyrocket just like the ROTV did? Or do you think in a couple years or so that the prices will start to plummet since no one plays it anymore. But, i have seen many other games that are not played anymore still skyrocket in price since it was discontinued. What is your take, especially on the marro and D & D master set and what about the expansions (the ones that are available now). And i am talking about the prices of them being brand new in box and not used.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

In general, I think the set should be opened, played, kept in decent condition, and should still sell for around the same price as when you got it(if for only a bit less).

RotV's price shot up mostly because there was the 1st edition set(and it was not at all cheap to make in the first place). The 2nd edition set probably won't sell for as much, but of course the land would still sell for a bundle(the figs can be bought dirt cheap y'know).

BTW, try the sites listed on the front page to find more figs(for varying prices), so you can have even more options!

Welcome to 'Scape!

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

I think that prices are going to peak over ther next year or so, then begin a gradual decline as interest wanes (or so I hope ).

Questionable investment value aside, SotM is awesome (Stingers ftw!) and if it were mine I'd open the one I have, and buy a second to store if I really thought I was going to make any money off it.

Btw, any chance we'll get to see you this Saturday, rydude?

Yeah, I have to agree with Kilo*, prices are going to peak, then drop. But, you're never going to have a $500 SotM, and I'll probably never acheive my dream of buying KoW by the bucketload dirt cheap...

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

I think SOTM is going to start raising in price now that it is no longer accessable to retailers. I still have 3 in my store but I can't get any more from any of my suppliers. It will never go up as much as ROTV though. Probably it will max out at around $50. I don't think you will see the DnD or Marvel sets ever rise in price though. There were a lot more copies of those produced, much less demand, and much lower quality.

I don't know this Kilo you're talking about, but you're more than welcome to call me KiLLo (Kilo being a nancy-Euro measure of weight, while Killo is an awesome American measure of, um, kills, I guess. )

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

Saving a toy for an "investment" seems like a shame. I can think of a lot better ways to invest my money.

Open the set. Enjoy it for what it is worth.

On a side note I was cleaning my attic this weekend and came across a Star Wars toy from my youth. I still have the original box and all of the parts. I took a look at e-bay for it and saw one exactly like mine but "brand new in the box" selling for $3000. I was amazed. I think mine is still probably worth from $350 to $500 in the shape it is in. I would still not trade the $2700 for the fun I had playing with it as a kid.

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

I doubt that SotM or any of the sets avaliable late in HS's life will go up in value.

RotV got pricey beacuse of the great value the set offered and its discontinuation during the height of the game's popularity.

You should open and play with your SotM set.

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

I don't see MS3 ever going up in price. A big reason for the rise in price of MS1 is the large amount of terrain you get and the great figures included. MS3 is light on terrain and none of the figures are really must haves. MS2 might go up a little bit, but it will never reach MS1 levels. If you want to keep one MS NIB for potential resale in the future, MS1 is the one you want to have. Of course from a investment stand point, you should have done so when Walmart (and a few other big box stores) were clearing out their shelves by letting MS1s go for $20 each. Those days are long gone though.

As far as Heroscape prices in general, I think they may stay high for the next several years as avid fans continue to try and fill out the holes in their collections and late comers to the game look to grow their own collection. Eventually though (3-5 years?) I can see the prices for most stuff start to drop as general interest wanes and a flood of product hits the market when young kids now grow up and head off to college. I think the price of select units will remain high though, those units that are particularly good/popular will still command a good price. It it just all the good, but not great, units and below that will lose serious value. The availability of said units will be high and the demand low. I know that if I ever feel the need to cut down the size of my collection (or need some quick cash) I will let go of all the units I don't use very often first and hold back my favorite/most used units.

This of course assumes that Heroscape is never brought back to life. It is entirely possible that 5+ years down the road, with new management in place at Hasbro and a thriving US economy they might decide to give Heroscape another run. How they handle it will determine how much the old stuff is worth. If they successfully relaunch the brand with new product only, then new players brought into the game will want the old stuff driving up prices. If they reissue some of the old stuff while relaunching the brand, then the prices on those reissued items will obviously drop. New figures could make old ones more relevant, changing their value as well. I doubt even with a relaunch of the brand they will ever reprint all 13 waves, so some units value may sky rocket if a relaunch ever occurred.

Re: Discussion with Friend about future prices

oh yeah, play your game, don't keep it NIB. Used Heroscape sells for almost as much as new. I sell used 'scape at the store here too and it is usually only about 20% lower than the new stuff. It does pretty well.
