New HeroScape player

Hello Im new to the HS game and seeing as this is the best(and only)super HS community I wanted to post some questions so the experienced players could answer.

For a new person to HS is the Master Set the only current Set that brings everything a new player would need to start learning about the game? I mean is that the HS for noobs, buy this and learn, buy it again to expand the game?

Also is Hasbro planning on one day releasing some kind of Master Set 2 or some expansion that would be as big(lots of content) as the MS?

I will buy the MS today so your answers will be really appreciated.

Ok when I buy it what other expansion would you guys recommend?

Thats it. Well I just saw the HouseMouse websites and in the future, if I get some money, will buy from it specially the hexes set and stuff.

Welcome to the boards. And welcome to the (ADD ECHO) Battle of All Time (END ECHO). Ok, that was kinda silly.

To start with one Master Set is all you need. And you'll be fine enjoying quite a few games without any expansions. Another Master Set, in my opinion, isn't needed until you've got almost all of the figure expansions.

As for what expansions to get, I'd probably suggest you pick up whatever you can find. As expansions go through peaks and valleys as far as their availability.

DUND is underestimated and under-rated.

The master set is THE starter set. That's the game. Everything else is EXPANSIONS, in other words, they expand the game.

Yes, the Master set has everything in it you need to play and get started. From there, it depends what you like. There are a plethora of other characters and terrain sets that will increase your options of what to play and how you play, but they are largely to be determined with what you like. I like everything so really get what you can afford and what you really want. I found at least 2 master sets, at least 2 road to the forgotten forest and 1 of the other terrain sets is plenty for the maps I build, 2-3 of the common units and 1 of each of the unique is plenty for me as well. Others here will have differing opinions. Read around, I am sure you will get alot of opinions and information from this site.

Welcome to the community, Flex1!

The master set is currently THE only way to get started. I'd recommend buying that and playing with it for a while to learn the game and to discover what type of play style suits you. Dunno if Hasbro will do a different MS in the future or not.

As for expansions, the first thing to say is "get what interests you". If you find you really like the Krav Maga, for example, you might want to get Nakita Agents. If the Tarn float your boat, you might try Knights. After you've played a bit, ask again telling us what you like and don't like from the MS.

Having said that, you should probably get two sets of some sort of common as the first thing you try (this will let you get the "commons" experience - the only thing missing from the MS). Should they be available I'd recommend Grut Orcs for this because they have good synergies with MS figures and make for solid, fieldable armies.

I'm sure you'll get tons of other advice, so that's it from me for now.

EDIT Oh! Wait! You want to hold off until Sunday on buying the MS - get it at Toys R Us and you can get a free flagbearer too! (Flagbearers are nifty, but pricey) /EDIT

Also, know that there are several different variants of the MS. The original release, which has "sparkly water," The 2d edition, no sparkly, comes with ugly, but servicable water tiles and the EOV set. That is a limied edition MS available only at walmart that comes with extra figures. If you can get one it would be great because of the extra stuff but they are harder to find now. Good luck!

wow super quick replies. Thanks for all the info.

Is there any other difference between the 1ed and 2ed of the MS? Other than the water sparkliness or non-sparkliness?

Also is that Toys R Us special offer global or just few selected shops?

I live in Puerto Rico so if the offer is US only then I guess it means it would be valid here. Gonna have to check about that becuase if it is valid here then I will hold until Sunday(or the day of the offer).

Again thanks.

...Is there any news or information about an upcoming Desert style expansion or Jungle?

The rulebook is updated with a few clarifications. Both the 2d ed. and the EOV set have the 2d ed. book.

Last question...for the moment.

I have played MageKnight(or something like that) and the game that started it all(I think) Warhammer.

So are the HS figures about the same size as the ones in those two games?

About. They are close enough that most people won't notice the difference. What you will notice more than the size is the style between the different sculpts. Warhammer is typically more "cartoony", with not as realistic proportions and really huge weapons and banners. Mageknight is more realistic, but in my opinion the figures seem smaller with thinner arms and legs. Heroscape is probably somewhere in the middle, with kinda realistic proportions and a similar style between all of them. Plus, the paint jobs have been pretty consistant between all the Heroscape waves, where the Mageknight line went through some changes during its run.

Just to clarify, there are a couple. The 1st edition had seperate dice for attack and defense (red with 3 skulls/3 blank and blue with 2 shields/4 blank, 10 dice for each). The second edition has 12 white dice, each with 3 skulls, two shields and one blank. Also, the rulebook was revised and combined with the scenario book, so now you get one book thats twice as long instead of two books.

The only real difference other than the dice is the water tiles. If you don't have the sparkley tiles now, then don't worry about it, because future Master Set purchases won't look weird next to your 1st edition water.

I got nuthin...
