Armoc Vipers 12/14/10

After seeing .68's thread on modding Mimring to Zelrig, I decided to try a mod. I had an extra squad of Elite Onyx Vipers from the Exclusive RePack a few waves ago, so I decided to try and make an Armoc Viper mod.

I even redid the card:



The mod was pretty easy. I took the EOV and snipped off the bananas they were holding. I used some Apoxie Sculpt to add the little hook weapons to their hands and the armor shoulder pads. I also added some ribbed muscle underneath their arms to add some bulk. I also added some pointy horns on their heads. Then, I painted them green and the armor/weapons silver. Added some yellow highlights and drybrush alone with some white drybrushed on the teeth. I finished it all off with a dark wash and then a glossy sealant.

I know alot of people out there need Armocs so maybe this is one way they can get that squad until they find a good deal. Thanks for looking and let me know what you think!

Although I don't have anything new to upload (working on about 6 different projects at once right now) I do have a discussion point, and although not strictly modification, is still relevant to the topic, and, as this is my thread, I can talk about what I want

Question is: Did you superglue your dragon's wings on to the dragon?

All my dragons with detachable wings have been super glued. Mimring was getting so bad falling apart (a long time ago mind you) that I finally superglued his wings to him. While I was at, I just superglued the rest (even Sojua's wings). I have all my large figures sitting out on display, so storage isn't an issue. I was just curious what everyone else did.

Samuel Brown 8/2/11

Well, I have finally gotten around to finishing all my current mods/repaints. I wanted to wait until they were all done before posting. The first one I am putting up is Samuel Brown. He was the simplest. Although I didn't have an extra 4th to repaint, I had quite a few Redcoats, so I found the Redcoat that matched Samuel Brown the best and used that one. I did a little bit of tweaking on the model such as cutting off the bayonet and some other little bits. It isn't an exact match, but I feel it is good enough for the game room table games I play (since I don't do tournaments.)

Now, a bit more about the other project(s) I was working on. Since I play HeroScape as a hobby, I don't ever intend on dropping huge bucks for figures. (Hence the Armoc mods above). That also means since I opted for the Tundra vs Flag Bearers many years ago (TRU had shelves and shelves of both...) I doubt I will ever aquire any of the FlagBearers, so I decided to repaint/mod exisiting D&D/Scape/Clix into my rendition of the Flag Bearers.

Well, I have finally finished them all and would like to post them here. However, and this is where you guys come in, I would like to know which one you want to see first. Although, I didn't do a tutorial on each, I will explain my process and post pics (if I can find them) of the original piece(s) so you can see where it started and how it ended up.

So, which Flag Bearer would you like to see first?

Well, with one vote, Acolarh wins! Hopefully for the next one there are a few more votes.

Just a reminder, these custom/ mods are not meant to reproduce the Flag Bearers, they are meant to be good figures to use in my home games to play as the Flag Bears. Alot of them, I used my (limited) artistic license and abilities to mold, paint and design the model.

For starters, here is a pick of the real Acolarh:


and now my version of Acolarh:



As you can see, I tried to stick with a similar color scheme. I also stuck with the flag/sword equipment set up.

People will initially recognize the base or starting figure as none other then Chardris.



There is also the addition of the flag. This was taken from some war hammer bits. Here is the original flag/banner.



I actually cute Chardris' arm holding the staff off at the glove and superglued a warhammer arm/glove holding the flag pole to the arm.

I then took the fireball out of the other hand and added a sword (from on of the vikings if I recall correctly.)

Well, there was my first Flag Bearer custom/modification.

Like I said, this one was actually the simplest and required the least amount of work.

Laglor 8/14/11

Since Laglor was one of the ones you guys wanted to see next, and since it was on that took a bunch of modifications to make, I am doing that one next. Again, like last time, lets look at the original Laglor:

As you can see based on the banner I chose, I kept Laglor "primitive" look. Mine doesn't have as much tech as the original, but I do have some of the armors and such.

As for the construction, the base model was a War Ape from D&D Minis (as seen here

I started off cutting the arms off at the shoulders and repositioning them in a downward angle. I also cut off the spiked gauntlets at the forearms and added some gloved fists from a Mage Knight orc. Once the arms were all glued in and dry, I added the mini gun (from a Skullbuster Clix) and the flag (yet another Warhammer banner bits. Sorry the pic below isn't the exact one, but I couldn't find the orginal pic again).


The original banner banner came with the spiked pole. I just drilled a hole through the fist and cut the pole at the point the hand grabbed it and repositioned it in the top and bottom and glued it back together seamlessly. I then used some epoxy sculpt to mold the base. I had to use a bigger glob like that because the War Ape model at a very tiny point where it was molded to the original base. It was only standing on one foot, which is fine when the whole mini is all molded together. A lot more difficult when you have to attach it to a separate base. It doesn't look horrible, but not all that good either.

Once all that was dried, I painted it the colors you see now and added a dark wash. Laglor was one of my favorites to make because there was so much modding to do and I don't think it resembles the original much at all. (One of the others not yet shown is even more so a modification.)

Well, Ornak it is! Ornak was one of my favorites because I think the banner turned out most like the official Ornak. First thing, here is the official Ornak.

For starters, here are the base figures of my Ornak.

The top part of the orc is taken from Grimnak:


I cut him off the at the waist below his belt. Then, I took the legs of Finn:

and cut them off right below the belt. After doing some plastic shaving to make the two waists fit together, I super glued the two pieces together.

I then cut the spear off above and below his left hand and then hallowed the fist out so it could "grab" the flag pole. Then, I removed the Pole Axe from his right hand and added Sir Dupius's sword. I added the flag pole and banner. Once that was all dried, I painted the whole ensemble and gave it a dark wash.

I thought Armocs were 3/4s? I think you mixed up the stats with the Venocs...

I used the Armoc Card from the Books.



The only thing I changed was the graphics on the right side. Also, Venoc are A3/D0. They would be insane with a D3!

Thanks for checking though. I am defiantly capable of making that sort of mistake!

I have some more mods/customizations in works right now. I am still waiting for some Bits to come in the mail, but I have most of the modding done, and now am just adding various coats of paint.

For all the modders out there, I used a glossy sealant on the Armocs and that didn't leave me very happy. They are SUPER shiny. Would you recommend a Matte or a Semi Gloss (do they even make semi gloss sealant?)

I'd consider glueing my dragons' wings if they were falling apart, but so far I haven't had that issue, so I just leave them as is and re-snap them from time to time....I see glueing as kind of a last resort....
