Casual Play @ Grimfoe in Albany - 11/20 recap

Hey there - just a brief recap of our playing time at Grimfoe yesterday. Seeing as how Grimfoe still had a posting up here, I thought that there was a release party this past Saturday still - oops. I had invited 3 friends along, so at least we got to play. Here's the final tally...

The good - myself and three friends showed up to play. I played a Soulborg army (Q9, Q10, DW8K & Zettians) with great success, although to have my DW8K wiped out by Alex's Krav Maga agent before I even got him into play was embarrasing. We were able to play at least one game with each other over the course of about 3 hours, and had fun playing 'Scape. It was casual, no pressure, and the tables at Grimfoe are great for 'Scape. We definitely enjoyed playing. There was a M:TG Tournament going on, and some of the players came over to ask what we were doing which generated more interest in 'Scape. They also had some figure sets in stock, which was nice.

The not so good - I assumed the event was still on because the posting was still up and Grimfoe never replied to my emails. But we were the only ones who showed. One player was there when the store opened and the guys at the store knew nothing about it, no maps were set up - luckily I brought some terrain to make a second map, but there was confusion. To be fair, I am sure that was my fault, but I thought since the post hadn't been amended it might still be on. Also - maybe I am sheltered with playing Heroscape tournaments with y'all in a family-friendly atmosphere and casual games at Zombie Planet - but the language being dropped during the M:TG tournament made all of us playing 'scape glad we hadn't brought younger kids.

So, in the final tally - we had fun playing and agreed that the tables and space at Grimfoe were nice for big maps and such, and it was a good day for us adults and one 13-year-old to play. I don't think I would play there if I had my 5-year-old with me due to the language factor, but that's my choice.

BTW - I dropped in to Zombie Planet on the way home - He has a full stock of D3, D&D sets, a Swarm of the Marro Master Set, Castle sets, and a bunch of 'Scape figures in stock, in case people are looking for terrain. The owner said he's going to buy up as much Heroscape as he can to offer for the community, which is cool to know.

Agreed. While it was fun, if I was in the same boat as ZK I would in no way bring my kids there when there was a magic tourney being played. Now, that being said, I was the same 15 year old playing magic and cursing cause I thought it made me cool, so I can totally understand what they mean. Thankfully someone else showed up as I was just sitting there for a good hour before I found some terrain lying around and was able to construct some sort of map.

That being said, the set up at Grimfoe is great. There are tables for sitting or tables for standing. You can definitely do it all there. Hopefully we'll be able to organize a better event next time and have a bigger turnout. That or I guess we'll play at Karabin plaza

Really? The Magic events at my store (I love Magic, I play all the time) don't really have a lot of bad language being dropped at all. Of course the occasional bad word here and there, but nothing too outrageous.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised myself. I'm no prude, don't get me wrong, I hang out with bikers on a regular basis, so language doesn't bother me. But in a setting where I want to bring kids, I was surprised at the level it reached.

Happy to help. Heck, I needed something to do. I hope we can get another event going on sometime soon, even if there isn't any reason too. Sometimes it's just fun to play
