I love the mental image of starting the game with a stack of 16 markers. That would be awfully intimidating to the non-special-attacking crowd. I really like Daddyscaper's and killercactus's stinger combos against almost everything. Even rats aren't completely terrible - with no heroes to tie your army to a specific spot, you can spread your 20 figures across the full width of the map. With the screen stretched that thin, you should be able to punch a hole within a round or two on most maps. I like the Shurrak build gamjuven and chief brought up. You can also drop Eltahale+Marcu in those builds pretty easily in stead of Shurrak. Cyprien also works well, except against the Majors. I brought it up in the other thread, but I really like: 90 Marrden Nagrubs x3 220 Tor-Kul-Na 195 Mezzodemon Warmongers x3 505, 17 hexes Tor-Kul-Na is nice with anything that's afraid of special attacks, especially if that figure is good at closing in and killing ranged squad figures. This combo works best with Phantom Knights, but it looks pretty playable with the Mezzos too. Goblins would be great except that you run out of startzone space. Finally figured out what to try with these guys at 500 (besides them and stingers x4 each).

Re: Mezzodemon Warmongers - What's your army idea?
At 24 figures plus 12 markers and 7 additional life from cell divide you need an average of 43 successful hits against defense 3 to take this army down. If they took 1 1/2 average hits consistently per turn it would take a full 9 1/2 rounds to do that. Yikes! In the meantime, both squads are good at holding board position so they will be pretty good at bringing all attacks to bear on a given turn, keeping height, and the mezzos will be nasty holding glyphs. I like this one. It might actually work really well. Is there even another possible army that can soak this many wounds (also considering that you can only inflict one wound at a time, unlike against heroes)?

What are you going to do - try and kill the Mezzodemon on the glyph? Good luck with that. The Stingers or 10th or whatever alongside them is just going to enjoy that glyph until they're all dead, and that's bad news for the Mezzos opponent. And if you just ignore it and attack the Stingers/10th/what have you, they're still going to put a nice big dent in your army and, once they're dead, you have to deal with the Mezzos and their 8+ exoskeleton markers. Pretty darn sick. We'll see if the fear of Q9 keeps these guys out of blind, pre-made tournies enough that they don't get crazy. Or, at least tourney directors keep the glyph pools relatively weak. What scares me the most if neither of those things happen is the amount of Q9 / Greenscales that will start to be seen to make sure they don't run rampant. Re: Mezzodemon Warmongers - What's your army idea?
I had another thought about that army which is not too pleasant. If the game goes to time, which that army can do, it's likely to have a lot of points still on the board because the early hits it takes will go toward exoskeleton markers, which don't count toward points. So not only is this army capable of stretching a game out to time, but it might very well benefit from this more than the opposing army.
If the dividers are used aggressively early on and then all wound markers are used up, when this army is 3/4 dead (in terms of wound soak capability), it can still have about 11 mezzodemons on the board on average (almost all of them), worth 390 points, or 357.5 points for partial scoring. This is compared to 600/4 = 150 points for the opponent. This is all theoretical but it's an interesting thought... |

It can get particularly brutal if you partner them with something else that plays slowly and save them for last. If you can take up 3/4 or so of the match with your opening units, the Mezzodemons might be able to last the last 1/4 without dying while they kill stuff and you win on points. I don't much like it, but it's out there. Like battle reports? Click Tourney Reports (New 10/21/2012 - Cutters / Brutes!) KC's Maps Click KC's Customs Scaper of the Week #57 |
