Aluminum Dice Towers

I work in metal fabrication and have used some scrap pieces of aluminum to create two dice towers. I first got the idea when we made some turbo intake pieces with a 90 degree bend. I had the L-shaped tube welded to an aluminum tray (made from 4x2 aluminum tube) and then polished it to a mirror finish.

The second tray I made entirely of 4x2 aluminum tube. They work great, but when I tested out the first one I found the dice hitting the raw aluminum was extremely loud and annoying, so I cut pieces of felt and used spray on adhesive to line the tray. Now they are quiet and have a more finished look.

One unintended feature I really like on the 4x2 design is that the front of the tower reflects the dice in the tray. This is great when you're sitting at a table and don't have to stand up to see the dice in the tray from the other side of the table.

The mirror finish is nice, but I'd like to try out some other finish ideas too. A glossy painted finish might come out nice (I'm thinking black paint with black felt) and powder coating it would really be sweet, but I don't have access to a powder coater at the moment so that will have to wait.

Anyway, I just wanted to post some photos and share my creation with anyone who's interested. Please post any comments or feedback. Thanks.

I really wish there wasn't an eyeroll emoticon. It makes every comment seem all that more rude. I am pretty sure that's not what you're going for (if you are, I apologize) but adding it on there really makes you come off as condescending. And its not just you, its just about every use of it on this site, I really hate it when people use it, especially in regards to quoting something that was said by someone else.

Anyway, really nice dice towers rudy. My friends and I had been thinking of tackling a similar tube one in the near future. They look some sharp.

Re: Aluminum Dice Towers

I know rudyvalentine and have seen the original (tube) design in person (in fact, at our last event, my daugher one a smaller version of it). rudyv's work is beautiful. Can't wait to see the square design this weekend. Glad you're sharing your design with all Scapers--these are sharp!

Re: Aluminum Dice Towers

Very cool! Really like the unpainted, polished look. Some different un-painted finishes could be cool, too (brushed, swirled, etc.).

On the contrary, the smile at the end of the eyeroll indicates the friendly nature of the emoticon. I find that it is more rude to not use it because you can't tell pitch and dynamics on type. Therefor you can't discern intent based on heard verbal cues. The same is for "lol", it signifies kidding or joking in an expression that may have come off rude before.

For example: "You are a piece of flesh only fit for worms."

Pretty rude, right?

Now this : "You are a piece of flesh only fit for worms, lol."

Much less rude and more funny.

Wow! That's very nice. And solid at 15 pounds. I haven't weighed the aluminum towers but they are very light weight, probably 3-4lbs.

I'm impressed. Thanks for sharing the link.

Re: Aluminum Dice Towers

Very nice. One question though, do the dice tumble enough in the cylinder or do they just slide down? Any way you could insert some 'obstacles' for the dice to hit so they get knocked around a bit inside the tube?
