First Customs advice?

Hello all. Im completely new to this website, but Im a big fan of heroscape. Recently (actually, about a day ago), I decided to give making customs a shot. Being completely new to this I was wondering how my first attempts were, and what programs are the best for making custom cards.

Thanks to all future replies!!

MASTER CHIEF (Spartan 117) (jandar)
MOVE: 6
RANGE: 6
ATTACK: 4
DEFENSE: 5
LIFE: 5

SPECIALS
Grendade special attack(atk-3/ rng-12)
Human Soldier Attack Enhancement
-6 clear sight spaces of Chief gain 1 atk and 1 def

THE ARBITER (einar)
MOVE: 6
RANGE: 6
ATTACK: 2
DEFENSE: 4
LIFE: 4

SPECIALS
Energy Sword 5
when engages, Arbiter gains 5 attack dice
Active Camoflauge
(combo of disengage and shadow walk)

...so lemme know whatcha think. i tried to make them as generic as i could without getting mixed up in the various weapons of Halo and it seemed to come out well.

Re: First Customs advice?

You can use GIMP, a free clone of Adobe Photoshop. link

Also, you can use the Magic Set Editor with a Heroscape template. link

I would say that the MSE is more user-friendly and straightforward, but any one will do. Hope that helps, and welcome!

I've never used MSE but i have used GIMP. Lemme say GIMP is AMAZING!. Like he said, free clone of Photoshop. It takes much, much time to learn how to use (dang multiple windows, layers, and selections) but the gritty truth is that it's amazing. I'm working on Halo customs as well, except i'm going more "in depth", WITH the weapons and stuff.

Also, I like the base stats. It's always good to start off small.

But really, get the GIMP. Learn it, use it, love it. Make it your best friend. You can do ANYTHING with it, not just Heroscape stuff.

But i haven't used MSE at all yet so it might be worth a shot. I hear MSE is basic make-a-card software. (I'm not that well educated in it)

Let us see what it looks like when it's finished!

-Good luck in future customs

I agree. Gimp is a lot more versatile once you learn how to use it, but if you don't want to make something really fancy, MSE is great and quick.

Re: First Customs advice?

I love GIMP too. Use it for art type things.

For heroscape though I made an applet thats hosted online just to speed it up. Always thought it took ages to set text boxes up in GIMP.

www.fostorial.webs.com/applet.html

It adds figures images from pngs, jpegs bitmaps and (I cant remember but should work) gifs. Just set them up with transparency in a simple editor.

Its best for quick and easy card setup then just save the card and add the figure image in something else.

I'd learn GIMP though because it is awesome!

HS Card Factory (Online applet) - A simplified custom making tool!! (Designed for java 1.6, may work with 1.5)

I'm by no means a custom expert, but...

Not sure what sort of point cost you're going to give this guy, but it's probably going to be way too high... Consider that Taelord is at 180 for "only" enhancing +1 attack up to 4 clear sight spaces... and this guy would have the longest range in the game (12)... I think you're going to have to dial both powers back quite a bit to give room to draft anyone with him!

Much more reasonable point cost... a stronger/faster Agent Carr so use his points as a basis. I'd probably suggest simply giving him Phantom Walk instead of Active Camouflage because it's the same power and we already understand what it means... but it's your custom!

As for Gimp, I used whitestuff's tutorial when I made my custom... it was fantastic!

I need you to be awesome. Can you be awesome?

Thanks to AmishBurrito for a promo code and Gulp for sending wound markers!

Re: First Customs advice?

my mistake on the chief's grenade special, its supposed to be similar to the airborne elite's special... with a LOB:12 and RANGE: 5.

And the enhancement isnt like Taelord's, becuase that is for every figure, this is more specific (only human soldiers) like grimnak's orc warrior enhancement and
Marcus' soldier attack enhancement, though itd be better if it was only adjacent so ill switch it.

thanks for all replies so far!, Im working on a few more and they will be up shortly.

Re: First Customs advice?

Heres a couple more that I came up with, for the halo guys im using haloclix and for the other ones mentioned im using old 'Battleball' figures.

TARTARUS (utgar)
MOVE: 5
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 4
DEFENCE: 5
LIFE: 5

SPECIALS:
-Brute Rage
Every time tartarus takes a wound, he gains an
attack dice.
-Fist of Rukt (atk-3/ rng-1)
When tartarus inflicts a wound with his normal
attack, all adjacent figures to the victim are
affected by the Fist of Rukt and roll defense dice
normally

Silver Isis (vydar or utgar)
MOVE: 7
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 3
DEFENSE: 3
LIFE: 4

SPECIALS:
-Phantom Walk
-Stealth Dodge

Prototype X (not sure about the name) (utgar)
MOVE: 5
RANGE: 1
ATTACK: 5
DEFENSE: 6
LIFE: 5

SPECIALS:
-Mind Shackle 20
-Double Attack

First save the cards as *.jpg, *bmp, or any file format you like. Then if you are a site supporter, upload them to the gallery on this site. If you're not a supporter (like me), get a Photobucket account. Upload the images and put them in your posts. Use the [IMG] code to put them in.
