Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

Just an idea I've been toying with... what would actually go into a new master set?

Lets assume it's on par with SOTM: 232 hexes, 24 figs and a big cool terrain. We'll make all figs Uniques for keeping it easy.

Now, we need a theme to go with our set... so lets have a theme that needs definite representation: Ullar and Vydar!

----------
Figures!
We want each team to be equal, so we distribute the figs the same way.

Ullar and Vydar both get 3 heroes, plus two squads with 3 members each.
What are the squad and heroes? Give a basic rundown of concept, stats, abilities and cost. Aim to make each team worth around 400 points.

Make the squads different types, species, etc.
Don't go "Elven archers and Elven warriors"
More like "Dwarven Berserkers and Halfling Slingers"
Give each squad a matching hero, like a dwarf battle-priest and halfling rogue. The third hero can be separate, or matching a squad.

2 Large figs... What are they? Preferably not Ullar or Vydar. Add a 4 man squad to that (again, not Ullar or Vydar) to round it out.
----------
Terrain!

What is the terrain theme for the set? Ullar implies forests, Vydar implies cities. We have 232 hexes... can we effectively do both?

If we can't, then what terrain theme should we go with?

Along with that, we need an LOS blocker. What will it be?
----------

Submit ideas and suggestions. We can take the best, compile them, and have a concept for an awesome set.

(And who knows, maybe the custom folk will do it all up)

Re: Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

It should not be too tightly themed. I feel SotM was waaaay too much Marro.

Instead, make mini-sets that are themed by generals. Master Sets should be comprehensive and stand-alone enough. Not a giant set of swamp.

Re: Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

Ever checked out the "What Makes a Good Master Set" thread? This is practically the same concept.
However, I think if there was a nice mix of terrain, and a good mix of figures (truly, I do not care about the generals: they have little purpose except storyline, a few special abilities, and general-themed armies; even if it was half-or-more Utgar, I wouldn't care), I would be satisfied with it.

So you think something calle SWARM OF THE MARRO should not have had too much Marro?

Then exactly who would be doing the swarming???

Re: Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

You know...I thought about something...the two master set's names are:

Important word, Unimportant word, Unimportant word, Important word. Just think. RISE of the VALKYRIE, SWARM of the MARRO. Following this code, does anyone have an idea for a name. A few I thought of were:

Lost to the Sands= desert with quicksand and all that.
Power of the soulborgs= Set packed with soulborgs from Vydar and Utgar.
Night of the Dead= Many undead figs, possibly more Esenwiens.
Home to the Elves= Master set with many trees.

Things in life dissapoint you. Even heroscape...when you notice how light your wallet is.

Re: Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

I know I've said it in several threads (and that there is no need for this thread to repeat it), but I will add here again that I hope the next (if there is one) Master set will be strong on Aquilla and Vydar. It would be a wonderful way to bring Aquilla into the picture quickly. It would help Vydar who while his forces are excellent, can use some more options. And it opens up the chance to develop the idea of Vydar's secret caves, etc., hinted at in the Journal (a chance to make Vydar more unclear as a "good guy" and more the "hired gun" he seemed to begin the game as).

Anyhow, this has been said before, but it is something that I'd really like to see, so here it is for posterity to see again .

(Do a search for "Soulborg Factory" for some of the really old threads related to new Master Set ideas, btw. Fun stuff.)

Re: Hypothetical: New Master Set Composition

I like the "Night of the Dead" Idea something to power up Utgars army, he needs more Undead, the Marros are good for now I think at least. Ad in another theme with it though, SotM was not bad but a little to much marro or just not enoff good guys, but none the least have a combonation mabey Vydar or Aquilla they are lacking a bit.
